Download or read book Operation SNAPPER Nevada Proving Grounds April June 1952 Project 4 2 Biomedical Exposure Equipment written by R. H. Draeger and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication describes and evaluates equipment designed for the exposure of animals and biological materials to certain effects of an atomic bomb explosion. In this sense the subject matter belongs in the same report, however, since there is considerable diversity in the effects considered, a single chapter has been devoted to each type of equipment. The first chapter is concerned with exposure to direct air blast, the second deals with the production of flashburns, the third with exposure to ionizing radiation. Certain instruments are described in the fourth chapter which are applicable to more than one type of exposure equipment. (Author).

Download or read book Operation Tumbler Snapper Nevada Proving Grounds April June 1952 Project 12 1 Bhangmeter Mod II written by and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mod II Bhangmeter used for Operation Tumbler-Snapper was developed for Operation Buster-Jangle. It is a device for determining the yield of an atomic explosion photoelectrically. A measure of the visible radiation as a function of time provides a basis for scaling the device under measurement against previously detonated weapons of known yield. The evaluation of this instrument can be traced through previous reports such as Air Drop Instrumentation, Bhangmeter.

Book Operation Tumbler Snapper Nevada Proving Grounds April June 1952 Report of the Advisory Personnel to the Air Sampling Program

Download or read book Operation Tumbler Snapper Nevada Proving Grounds April June 1952 Report of the Advisory Personnel to the Air Sampling Program written by William S. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Industrial Hygiene Group of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) Health Division was called upon by the Radiological Safety (Rad-Safe) Unit, organized for Operation Tumbler-Snapper at the Nevada Proving Grounds, to act in an advisory capacity for their air-sampling program. This report presents the results of the program, as well as an evaluation of the administrative, personnel, and equipment requirements necessary to provide these results on subsequent tests. In all considerations of the air-sampling program for Tumbler-Snapper, time played a most decisive role. This was particularly the case in the advance preparation for such a program. That time did assume such importance is mentioned at the start of this report as an indication from experience that an air-sampling project cannot be expected to be entirely satisfactory when included as an afterthought. Book Operation SNAPPER Nevada Proving Grounds April June 1952 Project 1 1 The Measurement of Free Air Atomic Blast Pressures

Download or read book Operation SNAPPER Nevada Proving Grounds April June 1952 Project 1 1 The Measurement of Free Air Atomic Blast Pressures written by Norman A. Haskell and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock overpressure as a function of time has been measured by utilizing an array of parachute-borne pressure gages spread over a wide range of distances and altitudes above two atomic detonations. The operation was accomplished by deploying 16 parachute-borne canisters from two aircraft at each shot. Each canister contained an altimeter transducer, two differential pressure transducers, a radio telemetry transmitter, and a radio tracking beacon. The telemetered pressure data were recorded at a ground station and the position of each canister was determined by radio range measurements from three multiple object tracking stations. The dropping aircraft were guided to a predetermined drop point with reference to both position and time by two SCR 584 radar stations. (Author).

Book OPERATION SNAPPER Nevada Proving Grounds Project 8 5 Incendiary Effects of Atomic Bomb Tests on Building Sections at Yucca Flat

Download or read book OPERATION SNAPPER Nevada Proving Grounds Project 8 5 Incendiary Effects of Atomic Bomb Tests on Building Sections at Yucca Flat written by H. D. Bruce and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sections simulating four types of frame building structures were exposed to TUMBLER Shots 3 and 4. The four types were: (1) cubicle room with furnishings, (2) wall-corner, (3) cornice-corner, and (4) roof. Sections 2 and 3 were exposed with and without a fine flash fuel. Douglas-fir springwood was charred at least slightly out to about 13,000 feet (radiant exposure 5.1 cal/cm2) by Shot 4. Sustained burning, either as glowing or flaming, took place only in fine fuels. It was concluded that the flash of radiant energy from an atomic explosion; will set sustained primary fire in fine fuel, but in general not in more massive fuels such as lumber and plywood. It is recommended that field study of primary fires on building structures be confined to fine fuels to ascertain the conditions under which they become ignited to self-sustaining fire and to such other shapes and materials as may be shown by laboratory experimentation to be a possible fuel for sustained primary fire.

Book Operation TUMBLER Nevada Proving Grounds April June 1952 Project 1 4 Air Blast Measurements

Download or read book Operation TUMBLER Nevada Proving Grounds April June 1952 Project 1 4 Air Blast Measurements written by ARMY BALLISTIC RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD. and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of Project 1.4 was primarily to determine the general shape of that portion of a shock wave propagated near the ground but originating from an atomic explosion high in the air. Secondary objectives were the calculation of peak pressures involved and the computation of a blast efficiency for each bomb. To achieve these purposes the shock arrival time method was used with blast switches at three levels above the ground both in the regular reflection and Mach reflection regions. The air shock arrival times clearly indicated that the free air shock velocity was higher in the layer from 10 feet above the ground to ground level than it was in the layer between 50 feet and 10 feet above the ground. The increased velocity near the ground is probably due to a heated layer of air near the ground caused by radiation from the bomb. On Shot 4, the air shock arrival times corroborate the existence of a precursor shock as observed by other methods. In the Mach region the shock front appears to be vertical between the ground and 50 feet in the air. The pressures calculated for Shots 1 and 4 in the Mach region are in fair agreement with curves presented in Supplement 1 to the Capabilities of Atomic Weapons. The blast efficiencies of Shots 1 and 2 were of the order of 62.7 percent and 68 percent respectively. No blast efficiency was computed for Short 4 due to the lack of free air data.
