Book excerpt: An initial study was conducted to determine the effects of raw water temperature on the finished water production rates of the Army's new 600-gal./hr Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit (ROWPU). This study showed that the finished water production rates decreased from 687 gal./hr at a raw water temperature of 68.3 F to 348 gal./hr at a raw water temperature of 33.7 F. The report also has a list of suggestions on how to set up and operate the ROWPU on the winter battlefield.

Book Predicting Product Water Quality from the 600 gallon per hour Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit

Download or read book Predicting Product Water Quality from the 600 gallon per hour Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit written by John R. Bouzoun and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary equation for predicting the total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration in the product water from the 600-gph ROWPU is presented. The equation requires the raw water temperature and TDS concentration as input data. Both of these variables can be easily measured in the field. The equation is presently limited to raw water TDS concentrations in the range of 800-900 mg/L. As data become available for a greater range of raw water TDS concentrations, including seawater, the equation will be modified. The standard error of the estimate is 3.4 mg/L. Keywords: Drinking water; Reverse osmosis; Water purification; Water quality; Potable water.

Book Prototype Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit

Download or read book Prototype Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit written by Maurice Pressman and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A.P. Hill, Virginia. The purpose of the study was to determine the production capacity and the capability of the system for removing color, turbidity, and dissolved salts from a highly colored, stagnant lake water, under field operating conditions. The results of this study indicate that: The prototype RO system, designed to produce 360 gph of product water at a 500-psi feed pressure, is capable of producing, at an average operating pressure of 555 psi, 414 gph (6.9 gpm) of product water at 81F with no color and 0.2 Jackson Turbidity Units (JTU) units of turbidity from a natural feedwater containing 185 units of color and 21 units of turbidity. Additional research is needed to improve the flocculation/clarification process of the filter component. (Modified author abstract).

Book The ROWPU Prefiltration System Removal of Microorganisms

Download or read book The ROWPU Prefiltration System Removal of Microorganisms written by Mitchell J. Small and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army has developed a Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit (ROWPU) to provide potable water during field operations . The unit uses coagulation, multimedia filtration, cartridge filtration, RO, and chlorination to provide a potable product from a variety of contaminated water sources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of the treatment system, minus reverse osmosis and chlorination, to remove microorganisms from fresh water under various conditions of water quality and at various system loading rates. If such a capability could be demonstrated, higher production rates could be realized at a lower energy cost. The system was assembled to process Monocacy River water. Bacillus globigii and Poliovirus I, LSc strain, were inoculated into river water. These organisms were unumerated at different locations within the system, as were naturally-occurring Escherichia coli, and the total aerobic and enteric bacterial groups. Nine-hour production tests were performed at 30, 35, and 40 gallon/minute flow rates. Microbiological enumerations indicated the following mean percent removals of microorganisms in the prefiltration system: Bacillus gobigii, 98.3; Escherichia coli, 93.5; Poliovirus I LSc strain, 80.3; total aerobic bacteria, 83.1; and total enteric bacteria, 86.8. Influent and process waters were also assayed for pH, alkalinity, total dissolved solids, total organic carbon, and turbidity. The multimedia filter was the major unit effecting removal.

Book 3000 2000 GPH ROWPU Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit

Download or read book 3000 2000 GPH ROWPU Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army's need for a 3000/2000 GPH ROWPU is stated in a ROC (required Operational Capability). In response to the above requirement, MERADCOM is developing a 3000/2000 GPH water purification unit for field use, based on the reverse osmosis principle. The unit must be capable of producing drinking water from any of the following raw water sources: Raw fresh water; Sea water; Brackish water, Water contaminated with nuclear agent; Water contaminated with biological agent; and Water contaminated with chemical agent.

Book Development of Precoat Filtration Technology for Reverse Osmosis Units

Download or read book Development of Precoat Filtration Technology for Reverse Osmosis Units written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE WHETHER DIATOMACEOUS EARTH FILTER AID (DE) filtration would be an effective alternative for the presently specified multimedia filter on the 600 GPH ROWPU. The project included both filtration studies and small scale reverse osmosis membrane fouling tests for several types of water sources. Data from six different water sources, two bench studies and four field studies, demonstrated that DE can easily meet, and if necessary exceed, the criteria set by the Army for multi-media filtered water for RO feed. For most tests a filter aid prepared by coating CELITE 503 with aluminum hydrate had the best balance between filtered water quality and cycle length. Such a filter aid could be purchased ready mixed greatly simplifying operation. Three RO 'life' tests were attempted. One was aborted after the membrane was damaged by chlorine from an extraneous source. The other two were successfully completed without evidence of particulate fouling of the membranes. (Author).
