Book Modern Gasworks Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Gasworks Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Geoffrey Weyman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Gasworks Chemistry In recent years it has come to be recognised that the Gas Industry is essentially a chemical industry. For this reason the chemist is rapidly being incorporated as an essential part of the controlling organisation. It is of national importance that coal - our greatest national asset - should be treated at all times with due regard to the fact that the supply is by no means unlimited. While coal is chiefly valued from the thermal standpoint it has to be remembered that it is also the only raw material from which many important substances can be obtained on a commercial scale. The Gas Industry is responsible for the primary treatment of a very large quantity of coal each year, and besides supplying the public with heat, light, and power it stands as an intermediary between the colliery and the chemical trade. Every year it becomes more and more important that there should be a definite collaboration between modern research and commercial practice. Time is always a factor to be considered, and to permit research work to lie neglected for many years, buried in a mass of literature with its significance unappreciated, is a sign of gross national inefficiency. It is for the chemical organisation to ensure that the application of research work to practical conditions follows quickly upon the advance of knowledge. This volume has not been written with the intention of discussing the chemical and physical theories which form the basis of the various processes carried out and the relative merits of various types of plant. Rather is it intended to describe the methods of controlling plant and processes in everyday use, in the hope that those who are endeavouring to introduce scientific control may be saved much time and trouble. It is assumed that the reader has perused the important work of Vivian B. Lewes on Carbonisation of Coal, and that he will not have neglected to refer, for description of plant and processes, to Alwyne Meade's Modern Gasworks Practice, which is now recognised throughout the world as a standard work of reference. It is also hoped that advantage will be taken of the reference books and papers quoted at the end of each chapter. Book The Gas Engineer s Laboratory Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gas Engineer s Laboratory Handbook Classic Reprint written by John Hornby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas Engineer's Laboratory Handbook The object of this volume, as its title implies, is to describe the various analytical operations which are required in Gas works. In order to make it useful to those who may not have the Opportunity of access to other works on analysis, the general operations incidental to the carrying out of analytical operations are described in detail, and further, as a means of assisting those who are dependent on self study, the methods of analysing certain substances obtainable in a perfectly pure state, and consequently having an established composition, are minutely described; these examples are chosen, as being typical of the more commonly occurring analyses required in Gasworks, as they involve the same methods of manipulation. By comparing the results obtained in the analysis of these simple substances with the figures demanded by theory, the operator can satisfy himself as to his competency to perform the same operations when they occur in the estimations required in his daily work. For example, the analysis of barium chloride serves as a type of the methods of manipulation necessary in the determination of sulphur in coal, coke, and gas, and in ascertaining the accuracy of the solutions employed in the Referees' Ammonia Test, &0. The estimation of calcium serves as a type of the analysis of lime; and so on. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Gas Engineer s Pocket Book

Download or read book The Gas Engineer s Pocket Book written by Henry O'Connor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas Engineer's Pocket-Book: Comprising Tables, Notes, and Memoranda Relating to the Manufacture, Distribution, and Use of Coal Gas and the Construction of Gas Works In placing this compilation before his readers - and in particular, his brother Engineers of the Gas Industry - it may not be out of place for the Author to indicate the circumstances which have led, in the first instance, to the preparation of the Tables, Notes, and other matter comprised in the volume, and now to their issue in the present form. Having frequently during the course of his professional career experienced the want of any book containing those numerous tables, data, &c., which, with the spread of engineering knowledge, are every day becoming more and more necessary to the Gas Engineer for reference, he has for many years been in the habit of making and preserving, for his own use, full notes from every available source. These notes have formed the basis of the present work, and the fact that they were originally intended only for his own personal use has rendered it in many cases well-nigh impossible for the Author to acknowledge the sources of his information. He desires, however, to express here his indebtedness to both the Journal of Gas Lighting and the Gas World, whose full and careful reports, given from time to time, of papers read and discussions held at the various meetings of Engineering Societies, at which questions concerning the Gas Industry have been under review, have afforded him the means of obtaining a considerable portion of the matter here presented. Book Gasworks Recorders

Download or read book Gasworks Recorders written by Leonard A. Levy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gasworks Recorders: Their Construction and Uses Progress in any branch of knowledge is intimately connected with improvements in the accuracy with which measurements appertaining to the branch of knowledge in question can be made. The advances in electrical engineering were largely in uenced by the development of measuring instruments, whereby the determination of the various quantities involved could be made with great accuracy. The same correlation holds true in the gas industry, and progress therein is largely determined by advances made in the science of measuring the various factors and. Quantities involved. Furthermore, it may be regarded as axiomatic that in every case in which an instrument is employed, additional advantages accrue if an automatic instrument, preferably a recorder of equal accuracy, can be employed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Operating Details of Gas Producers In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded Of this number, some per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and Iignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and Iignite. During the early years of these plants little success was anticipated from the use of bituminous coals and Iignites, but in 1904 and 1905 it was fully demonstrated at the Government testing station at St. Louis that these fuels could be utilized to excellent advantage. 'how ever, although many producer - gas plants in daily operation are using bituminous coal and lignite, many power-plant men are still skeptical regarding the successful commercial use of these fuels. The author has been fortunate in securing the co-operation of Mr. G. A. Burls, in collecting information and writing the book. Chapters I, II, V and XII are by the author Chapters VII, VIII, IX and XI are by Mr. Burls while Chapters III, IV, VI and X are in great part the work of Mr. Burls. The whole work, however, has been the subject of joint discussion, and the book as it now stands correctly represents the opinions of both writers. The aim throughout all the chapters has been the comparison of early and late constructions and the discussion of various problems which have appeared in the course of the development of the various types of engine since the introduction of the Otto cycle in 1876. Chapters I and II deal broadly with the development of four and two-stroke engines, and describe various difficulties which have been encountered and partially overcome; results of operation are given and various tests are dealt with both in the works and in practical Operation in factories. Chapter III deals with igniting arrangements, and describes and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods used, tracing the development which has demonstrated the supremacy of electrical ignition in its best forms.
