Download or read book OPERATION DOMINIC FISH BOWL SERIES Project Officer s Report Project 6 1 Fireball Attenuation and Refraction written by Robert J. Clawson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prime objective of the experiment was the quantitative measurement of the attenuation suffered by radar beams passing near or through the fireball of a nuclear detonation. During the test series, measurements were also made of effects produced in regions not directly associated with the fireball proper. A second prime objective of the experiment was to investigate possible phase differences which were expected to develop in nearly parallel radar rays passing through ionized regions. Ballistic rockets were used to place CW beacons, radiating at 1-, 5-, and 10-kMc frequencies. Five receiving stations, four on ships and one on Johnston Island, made signal strength measurements. An interferometer on the island made phase-front measurements at 1- and 5-kMc.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first experimental objective in support of the Fish Bowl Series was to make accurate measurements of the physical properties of the normal atmosphere (1) to provide information required for an accurate analysis of blast and shock wave data, (2) to provide density data permitting a more precise determination of the Thor reentry trajectory and (3) to provide data required for accurate determination of the functional relationship between the ionization produced by the detonation and the radiation that produced it. The second objective was to make measurements shortly after each nuclear detonation to measure heating and changes in atmospheric density and pressure in the vicinity of the fireball.

Book Operation DOMINIC Fish Bowl Series Project Officers Report Project 6 13 Volume 1 RF Measurements and Optical Measurements Summary

Download or read book Operation DOMINIC Fish Bowl Series Project Officers Report Project 6 13 Volume 1 RF Measurements and Optical Measurements Summary written by J. E. Hagefstration and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this project was to make RF measurements to determine the amount of radar refractive jitter present in a nuclear burst environment. The secondary objectives were: (1) measurement of electron line density; (2) investigation of radar clutter; (3) measurement of RF noise produced at one radar frequency; (4) measurements of absorption over a wide portion of the RF spectrum; (5) study of the early time effects of the fireball on radar measurements at several frequencies; (6) measurement of fireball reflection at early times (Blue Gill); and, (7) measurements of dissociated region reflectivity (Star Fish Prime). Optical measurements were made to determine: (1) damage to direct optical viewing systems, and (2) saturation and blanking of instrumentation viewing the burst region. Additional measurements, in support of other projects, were accomplished. (Author).

Book OPERATION DOMINIC FISH BOWL SERIES Project Officer s Report Project 6 6 Long Term Observations by Resonance Scattering Techniques

Download or read book OPERATION DOMINIC FISH BOWL SERIES Project Officer s Report Project 6 6 Long Term Observations by Resonance Scattering Techniques written by Edward R. Manring and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the apparent conclusions of this project are (1) low-yield, low-altitude devices do not lend themselves to a study by resonance scatter techniques; (2) devices such as King Fish, Star Fish, very high yield weapons at 50 km or higher, and low-yield weapons salted with an appropriate material, give debris concentrations which can be followed for many days and over wide geographical areas; (3) an inventory of materiaL cannot be made with a neutral species, unless the degree of ionization is established by independent techniques. Another species for which the neutral and ionized state can be observed should largely remove this uncertainty; (4) diffusion is an important mechanism for the long-term spread of debris over wide areas; and (5) early time observations were made but have not been studied. This data includes Tight Rope and some of the air drops.

Book OPERATION DOMINIC FISH BOWL SERIES Project Officer s Report Project 6 7 Debris Expansion Experiment

Download or read book OPERATION DOMINIC FISH BOWL SERIES Project Officer s Report Project 6 7 Debris Expansion Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experiment was designed to measure the interaction of expanding nuclear weapon debris with the ion-loaded geomagnetic field. Five rockets on Star Fish and two rockets on Check Mate were used to position instrumented payloads at various distances around the burst points. The instruments measured the magnetic field, ion flux, beta flux, gamma flux, and the neutron flux as a function of time and space around detonations. Data was transmitted at both real and recorded times to island receiving sites near the burst regions. Measurements of the telemetry signal strengths at these sites allowed observations of blackout at 250 Mc. Data reduction indicates that the early expansion of the Star Fish debris probably took the form of an ellipsoid with its major axis oriented along the earth's magnetic field lines. Collapse of the magnetic bubble was complete in approximately 16 seconds, and patt of the fission fragment beta particles were subsequently injected into trapped orbits.

Book OPERATION DOMINIC FISH BOWL SERIES Project Officer s Report Project 9 1b Ionospheric Wind and Diffusion Measurements

Download or read book OPERATION DOMINIC FISH BOWL SERIES Project Officer s Report Project 9 1b Ionospheric Wind and Diffusion Measurements written by K. S. W. Champion and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this project was to measure high-altitude wind velocities and diffusion coefficients in the altitude region between 60 and 150 km. The method involved the ejection of a sodium vapor trail from a Cajun rocket at dust or dawn twilight. The sodium was sunlit, and as a result of emission of resonance radiation, was visible against a darkened background for about 20 minutes. The trail was photographed simultaneously from four different sites, allowing for subsequent triangulation to determine the altitude of various parts of the cloud. A major application of these wind and diffusion data, taken at dusk and dawn following the high-altitude nuclear tests, was to aid in determining the disposition of the nuclear debris.

Book OPERATION DOMINIC Fish Bowl Series Project Officers Report Project 2 1 External Neutron Flux Measurements

Download or read book OPERATION DOMINIC Fish Bowl Series Project Officers Report Project 2 1 External Neutron Flux Measurements written by John W. Kinch and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to measure the neutron flux as a function of distance from high-altitude nuclear detonations. The threshold detector system was used to measure the flux. Gold, U235, Pu239, Np237, U238, sulfur, magnesium, aluminum, and zirconium foils were employed as detecting materials. Instrument pods carried aloft by the launch vehicles were used to position the detectors near the detonation. Four sets of instruments were placed in each of three pods for Shots Blue Gill Triple Prime, King Fish and Starfish Prime. The project was considered a success because it obtained data in all events.
