Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Operating Details of Gas Producers In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded Of this number, some per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and Iignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and Iignite. During the early years of these plants little success was anticipated from the use of bituminous coals and Iignites, but in 1904 and 1905 it was fully demonstrated at the Government testing station at St. Louis that these fuels could be utilized to excellent advantage. 'how ever, although many producer - gas plants in daily operation are using bituminous coal and lignite, many power-plant men are still skeptical regarding the successful commercial use of these fuels. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Producer Gas In the thirty odd years which I have devoted to the subject of Producer Gas and its applications, it has been my good fortune to make many pleasing friendships here and in other countries. Like most people, I have had my disappointments and troubles, but I have been greatly encouraged and assisted by the kind consideration and co-operation with which I have met. I feel especially indebted to Professor Ayrton, because he first gave me a helping hand in the most disinterested way. In 1881 I exhibited my apparatus at the Paris Electrical Exhibition, and there and then he volunteered to give a lecture on the subject in the Salle du Congres, in order to draw attention to what was being done, and to what it might lead to. I trust that the progress since made may be considered a justification of the interest he then awakened in the subject. I am also indebted to some of the makers of gas-engines. Not unnaturally they were at first disposed to think that it would not be to their interest to work their engines with producer gas, as it was so much weaker than town gas: the reputation of the engine itself was not then fully established, and they were fearful lest by using producer gas they might add to the difficulties with which they had to contend. That was in the days of small engines, when the consumption of gas was not great, and when the cost of the gas was of minor importance. Later they realised that the future of gas-power depended largely on producer gas, and I had the advantage of their co-operation. I am fully conscious that the growing importance of producer gas demands a more exhaustive treatment than I have been able to give it in the limited time at my disposal. Download or read book The Modern Gas Engine and the Gas Producer Classic Reprint written by Arvid Michael Levin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-31 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Gas-Engine and the Gas-Producer Of the total amount mined, so far, due to exacting require ments with regard to the quality of the marketable fuel, and due to wasteful methods of mining it, there has been left in the ground, inaccessible for future use, or wasted as unmarketable product, an amount even greater than that actually rendered useful. The portion of the fuel consumed for industrial purposes, for generating power, or for metallurgical use, which is by far, the greater portion of the fuel actually rendered useful, has. According to modern standards, been utilized particularly inefficiently; but a tendency toward a strict reform in this respect is afoot, and the problem at present is how to utilize, not only the energy in the good grades of fuel to the greatest possible extent, but also to find new ways for an effective utilization of inferior grades hitherto wasted. The gas-engine is looked upon as a means for effecting reform in the one respect as well as in the other, and, although the final development of the engine has probably not as yet been seen, its theory indicates at present how far an increased economy may be hoped for, just as the steam-engine theory, in the days of Watt, indicated the final limit for efficiency of the steam-engine cycle, toward which the actual performance of the engine has gradually, by steps, approached closer. Book Producer Gas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Producer Gas: A Sketch of the Properties, Manufacture, and Uses of Gaseous Fuel IN 1902 the Author gave a course of lectures on Producer Gas at the Technical College, Glasgow. These attracted considerable attention, and it was requested that they should be published. As there was no convenient book dealing with the subject, the Author thought such a one might be useful; so he has prepared this little book, which is based on the notes of the lectures. Owing to unavoidable circumstances, the publication has been some what delayed, but this has perhaps not been altogether a disadvantage. The subject of gaseous fuel has been attracting a great amount of attention during the last few years, and very important advances have been made. The use of fuel gas is becoming every year more general, though the Author feels that at present it is only in its infancy, and that in the near future it will be used on a much larger scale, and for many purposes. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essential Factors in the Formation of Producer Gas In the course of its investigations of the fuel resources in the United States and of the methods by which these resources could be utilized with greatest efficiency, the United States Geological Survey tested a great variety of coals and lignites as gas-producer fuel. Early in these tests it was found that many factors controlling the formation of gas in the generating chamber of the producer and, consequently, having a direct bearing on the management of producer-gas plants, were not as well understood as they should be. The Geological Survey therefore took up a detailed investigation. Of the chemical and physical processes that take place in the producer, keeping in view not only the possibility of increasing the efficiency of the pro duoer as a source of energy, and the ensuing benefits to the public of cheaper power and greater utilization Of low-grade fuels, but also the application of the results to the problems Of boiler-furnace operations. Book Gas Gasoline and Oil Engines Including Producer Gas Plants

Download or read book Gas Gasoline and Oil Engines Including Producer Gas Plants written by Gardner Dexter Hiscox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas, Gasoline and Oil-Engines, Including Producer-Gas Plants: A New, Complete and Practical Work on Gas, Gasoline, Kerosene, and Crude Petroleum Oil-Engines A book representing and illustrating the details Of design, manufacture, and management Of a new and progressive prime moving power, falls behind its time. By age and therefore needs re arrangement and additions to bring its text and illustrations up to date in all the departments Of such progressive industry. There is probably no more important mechanical industry, involving the production Of motive power for all purposes within the age of steam, than that Of the explosive motor and its far - reach ing effect in the promotion Of industry by a cheap helping hand. SO quickly has this new power expanded to almost universal usefulness as a labor-saving element in the lesser industries, that the literature of the past is found lacking in its up-to - date needs. Progress and improvement are the drift Of genius in this advanced age. The progress made in adapting the use Of crude petroleum as fuel for explosive power, together with the rapid development Of the producer-gas industry, have given a new economy in the production Of power, while the use Of the hitherto neglected gaseous elements Of the blast - furnace and coke manufacture have added new sources Of power production at a nominal cost. With these matters in View the author has revised, rewritten, and added to the contents Of the last edition Of this work such material and ideals that have come to his knowledge as will better represent the latest standards Of construction and Operation Of the explosive motor; to which is included an illustrated chapter on the production Of the new fuel gases and their uses. Book Power Gas Producers

Download or read book Power Gas Producers written by Philip W. Robson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power Gas Producers: Their Design and Application; With 105 Illustrations The gas engine coupled with its own gas producer has now taken so important a position as means of deriving cheap power that it has become necessary for the engineer to acquire a knowledge of their principles as one of those subjects with which he must essentially be familiar. It is hoped that this book may prove an aid to those who are seeking up-to-date information, not only as it provides a fairly complete memorandum of the practice at present obtaining amongst the leading English makers of power gas producers, but also in the attempt which has been made to trace that connection between theoretical considerations and actual practice which should underlie all sound design. The scheme adopted therefore in each section of the book is firstly to indicate the theory of the subject as at present understood and then to shew how that theory is applied more or less by different makers in the construction of the gas plants they manufacture, after which typical examples of actual installations are described as shewing how power gas is being introduced at the present time. It is perhaps difficult for anyone like myself, daily engaged in furthering the interests of one firm, whose productions are constantly being offered to the public in competition with those of other makers, to impartially review the work of the latter, but I hope it will be considered that I have not greatly erred in this respect.
