Book Handbook of Medieval Culture Volume 3

Download or read book Handbook of Medieval Culture Volume 3 written by Albrecht Classen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A follow-up publication to the Handbook of Medieval Studies, this new reference work turns to a different focus: medieval culture. Medieval research has grown tremendously in depth and breadth over the last decades. Particularly our understanding of medieval culture, of the basic living conditions, and the specific value system prevalent at that time has considerably expanded, to a point where we are in danger of no longer seeing the proverbial forest for the trees. The present, innovative handbook offers compact articles on essential topics, ideals, specific knowledge, and concepts defining the medieval world as comprehensively as possible. The topics covered in this new handbook pertain to issues such as love and marriage, belief in God, hell, and the devil, education, lordship and servitude, Christianity versus Judaism and Islam, health, medicine, the rural world, the rise of the urban class, travel, roads and bridges, entertainment, games, and sport activities, numbers, measuring, the education system, the papacy, saints, the senses, death, and money.

Book Explorations in Ancient and Modern Philosophy Volume 3

Download or read book Explorations in Ancient and Modern Philosophy Volume 3 written by Myles Burnyeat and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myles Burnyeat (1939–2019) was a major figure in the study of ancient Greek philosophy during the last decades of the twentieth century and the first of this. After teaching positions in London and Cambridge, where he became Laurence Professor, in 1996 he took up a Senior Research Fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford, from which he retired in 2006. In 2012 he published two volumes collecting essays dating from before the move to Oxford. Two new posthumously published volumes bring together essays from his years at All Souls and his retirement. The main body of Volume 3 presents studies written for a wide readership, first on Plato's Republic and then on the reading and interpretation of Plato in subsequent periods, particularly in nineteenth-century Britain. The volume also includes hitherto unpublished lectures, 'The Archaeology of Feeling', on the ancient origins of some key modern philosophical and psychological concepts.

Book Aristotelian Subjectivism Francisco Su rez s Philosophy of Perception

Download or read book Aristotelian Subjectivism Francisco Su rez s Philosophy of Perception written by Daniel Heider and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents new material on Francisco Suárez’s comprehensive theory of sense perception. The core theme is perceptual intentionality in Suárez’s theory of the senses, external and internal, as presented in his Commentaria una cum quaestionibus in libros Aristotelis De anima published in 1621. The author targets the question of the multistage genesis of perceptual acts by considering the ontological “items” involved in the procession of sensory information. However, the structural issue is not left aside, and the nature of the relationship due to which our perceptions are mental representations of this or that object is also considered. The heuristic historiographical background includes not only the theories of classical authors, such as Aristotle and Aquinas, but also those of late medieval authors of the fourteenth century. These are headed by John Duns Scotus, John of Jandun, Peter Auriol and Peter John Olivi. Readers will discover the differences between Suárez’s and Aquinas’s views, as well as other sources that may have served as positive inspiration for the Jesuit’s theory. By considering the late medieval philosophy of the fourteenth century, this book helps, to a certain extent, to fill a gap in the historiography of philosophy regarding the link between late medieval and early modern scholasticism. In the first part of the book, the metaphysics of the soul and powers is considered. Chapters on the external senses follow, covering topics such as the sensible species, the causes of sensation, self-awareness, and the ordering of the external senses. A further chapter is devoted to the internal senses and the author argues that by reducing the number and functional scope of the interior senses Suárez deepens the gap between the external senses and the intellect, but he reduces it through emphasizing the unifying efficacy of the soul. This book brings a synthetic and unifying perspective to contemporary research and will particularly appeal to graduate students and researchers in theology and philosophy, especially philosophy of mind.

Book Solving Ordinary Differential Equations I

Download or read book Solving Ordinary Differential Equations I written by Ernst Hairer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "So far as I remember, I have never seen an Author's Pre face which had any purpose but one - to furnish reasons for the publication of the Book. " (Mark Twain) "Gauss' dictum, "when a building is completed no one should be able to see any trace of the scaffolding," is often used by mathematicians as an excuse for neglecting the motivation behind their own work and the history of their field. For tunately, the opposite sentiment is gaining strength, and numerous asides in this Essay show to which side go my sympathies. " (B. B. Mandelbrot, 1982) 'This gives us a good occasion to work out most of the book until the next year. " (the Authors in a letter, dated c. kt. 29, 1980, to Springer Verlag) There are two volumes, one on non-stiff equations, now finished, the second on stiff equations, in preparation. The first volume has three chapters, one on classical mathematical theory, one on Runge Kutta and extrapolation methods, and one on multistep methods. There is an Appendix containing some Fortran codes which we have written for our numerical examples. Each chapter is divided into sections. Numbers of formulas, theorems, tables and figures are consecutive in each section and indi cate, in addition, the section number, but not the chapter number. Cross references to other chapters are rare and are stated explicitly. The end of a proof is denoted by "QED" (quod erat demonstrandum).
