Book excerpt: Breakfast Memories is the story of a daughter's journey through her mom's dementia and her discovery of the power of memories stored in the soul. What prompted me to begin writing this book was the discovery of a pile of paper napkins that had been tucked away in a drawer on which my dad had written morning love poems to my mom. Every morning he placed one next to the breakfast that he had prepared for her. I found these napkins after my dad had died and my mom was in failing health at a local nursing home. The discovery of the napkins (sonnets) and sharing them with my mother was what brought her back from the darkness and despair of dementia.

Book excerpt: Ina Pinkney—the beloved restaurateur known affectionately as the “Breakfast Queen”—has been feeding Chicago for more than 30 years. When she closed her namesake restaurant’s doors in 2013, it headlined news across the Midwest. Now, the favorite dishes that thousands came to love at Ina's are showcased in the first paperback edition of her newly retitled book, Ina's Kitchen: Taste Memories and Recipes from the Breakfast Queen. Ina first self-published this book in hardcover in 2014, and it has already sold thousands of copies with minimal bookstore distribution. Ina's Kitchen is part cookbook part memoir, collecting 39 of Ina’s favorite recipes with stories from her life. From milestone moments and warm memories to the “truth” about owning a restaurant, readers will gain a deeper understanding of one of Chicago’s best-known culinary icons. Ina views her life as a recipe, and the book’s chapters reflect that notion. From “Ingredients” and “Preparation” to “Clean Up,” readers will come to understand what inspired and drove Ina’s love of food—and her culinary success. Recipes include everything from Ina’s signature Blobbs and Heavenly Hots to Foolproof Pancakes and Baked French Toast. In addition to breakfast favorites, Ina has also included savory dishes and dessert recipes. Ina's Kitchen is a love letter to the diners Ina has fed over the years. In it, she shares her wisdom with the same generosity—both of food and of spirit—that kept people coming back to her restaurant for decades.

Book Memoirs of My Life

Download or read book Memoirs of My Life written by John Charles Frémont and published by . This book was released on 1887 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his remarkable life, John Charles Frémont served as a senator for the newly-formed state of California, led Union troops in the Civil War, and was governor of the territory of Arizona. His race for the presidency in 1856 brought prestige to the fledgling Republican Party, yet despite his popularity, his uncompromising determination to abolish slavery cost him the election. For all of his experiences in politics and the military, it was the earlier decades of Frémont's life that were the most exciting. Shortly after graduating from college, he joined a mapping expedition and surveyed the hills of South Carolina and Tennessee for the government. Eager to continue exploring, Frémont went on five more expeditions to America west of the Appalachians during the years from 1839 to 1846. He traveled up the Missouri river, crossed the Rocky Mountains, and reached the West Coast on several journeys, often with his friend Kit Carson, the legendary mountain man. In Memoirs of My Life, Frémont recounts those years in the wilderness, encountering the fabulous landscapes and native people of America's interior before the westward expansion of the U. S. His journeys across the unmapped prairies, mountains, and deserts offer a wonderful glimpse of North America's natural grandeur in its original state.

Book Memories of the Future

Download or read book Memories of the Future written by Wendell Bell and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life courses, both professional and personal, are often directed by unplanned experiences. At crossroads, which path is followed and which hard choices are made can change the direction of one’s future. Wendell Bell’s life illustrates how totally unforeseen events can shape individual lives. As he notes, despite our hopes and our plans for the future, there is also serendipity, feedback, twists and turns, chance and circumstance, all of which shape our futures with sometimes surprising results. In Bell’s case, such twists and turns of chance and circumstance led to his role in developing the new field of futures studies. In Memories of the Future, Bell recognizes the importance of images of the future and the effect of these images on events to come. Such images—dreams, visions, or whatever we call them—help to determine our actions, which, in turn, help shape the future, although not always in ways that we intend. Bell illustrates, partly with the story of his own life, how people remember such past images of the future and how the memories of them linger and are often used to judge the real outcomes of their lives. This is a fascinating view of the work of an important social scientist and the people and events that helped define his life. It is also about American higher education, especially from the end of World War II through the 1960s and 1970s, a period of educational transformation that included the spread of the merit system; the increase in ethnic, racial, gender, and social diversity among students and faculty; and a massive increase in research and knowledge.

Book Memories of Yesterday

Download or read book Memories of Yesterday written by Janice Woffinden Tyrrell and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was somewhat apprehensive to return to work after a five-day vacation at the Ritz-Carlton Psychiatric Convention Center. After taking a deep breath, I prepared myself to be greeted by true friends who would tease me about playing checkers with the likes of Mrs. Coca-Cola and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Marie asked me how my vacation was. I nodded to the affirmative. We all had a good laugh at their loving insane insinuations. Party time was soon over, and my thoughts were back in the real world. I went to the floral department and thought, I wonder if Id remember how to make an arrangement? Instead, I started off slow and made a boutonniere. Easy enough, I thought to myself. With pride in my heart, I smiled because I still had the touch of doing them both Thankfully, soon it was break time. I ordered an Apple Fritter and a diet Dr Pepper. (Youre rightit makes no sense. But Ive been eating that combination for the past twenty-four years in the grocery business, and I have a waistline to prove it!) I was heading for the break room, as usual, when a familiar feeling came over me, and I saw myself in the eyes of another. I dont know why I slipped into their isolated booth in the stores small dining area. Across me was a very young and frightened woman sipping on a cup of coffee. She had tears streaming down her cheeks and looked rather startled at my appearance. But I had the feeling she was waiting for me. Although we were not formally introduced, words came freely between us. She spoke of her fears and frustrations. As she spoke, I listened, and my own struggles flashed before my eyes. We spoke candidly of her darkest secretone of sanity. I smiled as I told my new friend that the healing comes when you start believing in yourself. As I watched her, I recognized myself and was somewhat frightened for her. You see, its sad to lose yourself and your family and blame God for an illness you have no control over. To my surprise, I felt something brush up against my feet. I peeked under the tablecloth and discovered a fair-haired boy who was three years old. The young woman reached down and scooped him up. She cradled him in her arms, and he sucked on his thumb, then he quickly disappeared as he appeared. I smiled as I peeked under the table and saw an all-too familiar world of childhood imagination. I thought back to a time when my girls were very young. Like this boy, they too were victims of this cruel illness. We sat at the corner booth for a long time. Then the young woman began to weep again. Why would God do this to me? My mind flashed back in time once more to an unsettling time in my life. She took another sip of her coffee, and we spoke of her son. As she spoke of him, she smiled with her eyes, and a calm feeling came over her. We spoke of our lives and the roads we chose to take. As one living with mental illness, my advice to her that day was, Healing begins when you believe in yourself. To this very day, our paths have never crossed again. I have no idea what struggles this young woman had. All I know for sure is when we talked, she eased my troubles for a while by focusing on her own. I guess thats what life is all about. John, my husband of forty-five years, has been there with me every step of the way. If not for him, things couldve turned out very differently. I could have lost my life, my family, my sanity, and my faith in God. Through it all, there has been one constant thing in my life. When we spoke our marriage vows, nothing was said of until death do we part. What we said was for time and all eternity. On my darkest days, John would say, Honey, you just have to get better soon because we vowed to love each other forever, and forever is a very long time.
