Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “To hear silence is to find stillness in the midst of the restlessness that makes creative life possible and the inescapability of death acceptable.” So writes Mark C. Taylor in his latest book, a philosophy of silence for our nervous, chattering age. How do we find silence—and more importantly, how do we understand it—amid the incessant buzz of the networks that enmesh us? Have we forgotten how to listen to each other, to recognize the virtues of modesty and reticence, and to appreciate the resonance of silence? Are we less prepared than ever for the ultimate silence that awaits us all? Taylor wants us to pause long enough to hear what is not said and to attend to what remains unsayable. In his account, our way to hearing silence is, paradoxically, to see it. He explores the many variations of silence by considering the work of leading modern and postmodern visual artists, including Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, James Turrell, and Anish Kapoor. Developing the insights of philosophers, theologians, writers, and composers, Taylor weaves a rich narrative modeled on the Stations of the Cross. His chapter titles suggest our positions toward silence: Without. Before. From. Beyond. Against. Within. Between. Toward. Around. With. In. Recasting Hegel’s phenomenology of spirit and Kierkegaard’s stages on life’s way, Taylor translates the traditional Via Dolorosa into a Nietzschean Via Jubilosa that affirms light in the midst of darkness. Seeing Silence is a thoughtful meditation that invites readers to linger long enough to see silence, and, in this way, perhaps to hear once again the wordless Word that once was named “God.”

Book Ears Open Mouth Shut

Download or read book Ears Open Mouth Shut written by Mike Ognek and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EARS OPEN, MOUTH SHUT contains simple, yet critical advice for new entrepreneurs and those making a fresh start in their entrepreneurial life. Whether you are already on your way and ready to make the leap into your own business, are considering a shift from worker to owner, or need a look at why the business accounts are dry and you're on the way to crashing into a fireball, EARS OPEN, MOUTH SHUT will give you a head start by saving you from many of the mistakes people make when starting their own business. Mike Ognek is a former Marine Officer, successful entrepreneur, and author of Maneuver Management: Planning and Communication for Business Success. Looking back on his early entrepreneurial career, he saw the mistakes he made and realized how obvious they were after the fact. Like so many budding entrepreneurs, he read a lot of business books and learned a lot of higher level concepts that helped him in certain areas. The mistakes he made were not high level mistakes, however, so those books didn't help much. As he began working with other businesses to improve their operations with the tools and methodologies of Maneuver Management, he saw entrepreneurs making the very same mistakes he made. From that, he studied the most common, basic, and detrimental mistakes and compiled them in EARS OPEN, MOUTH SHUT so others could avoid the pains associated with making them.

Book Voices from Bears Ears

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 2016, President Barack Obama designated 1.35 million acres of public lands in southeastern Utah as Bears Ears National Monument. On December 4, 2017, President Donald Trump shrank the monument by 85 percent. A land rich in human history and unsurpassed in natural beauty, Bears Ears is at the heart of a national debate over the future of public lands. Through the stories of twenty individuals, and informed by interviews with more than seventy people, Voices from Bears Ears captures the passions of those who fought to protect Bears Ears and those who opposed the monument as a federal “land grab” that threatened to rob them of their economic future. It gives voice to those who have felt silenced, ignored, or disrespected. It shares stories of those who celebrate a growing movement by Indigenous peoples to protect ancestral lands and culture, and those who speak devotedly about their Mormon heritage. What unites these individuals is a reverence for a homeland that defines their cultural and spiritual identity, and therein lies hope for finding common ground. Journalist Rebecca Robinson provides context and perspective for understanding the ongoing debate and humanizes the abstract issues at the center of the debate. Interwoven with these stories are photographs of the interviewees and the land they consider sacred by photographer Stephen E. Strom. Through word and image, Robinson and Strom allow us to both hear and see the people whose lives are intertwined with this special place.

Book excerpt: “At the close of his sermon in the Family Worship on the evening of September 4, 2022, David Huegel challenged us during the next three months to seek a fuller awareness of the presence of God in our lives by revitalizing our prayer life. As a result of this challenge, I began to wonder what I might do and was inspired to write a devotional book with short meditations on the presence of God in our daily life.” I chose a brief statement by the English mystic, Julian of Norwich for the theme of the book: “Fullness of joy is to behold God in everything.” My hope is that as we meditate on the wonders of God around us and in our life experiences, we may sense His presence and be filled with joy.

Book The Ears of Hermes

Download or read book The Ears of Hermes written by Maurizio Bettini and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though in many respects similar to us moderns, the Greeks and Romans often conceived things differently than we do. The cultural inheritance we have received from them can therefore open our eyes to many "manners of life" we might otherwise overlook. The ancients told fascinating-but different-stories; they elaborated profound-but different-symbols. Above all, they confronted many of the problems we still face today-memory and forgetfulness; identity and its strategies; absolutist moralism and behavioral relativity-only in profoundly different ways, since their own cultural forms and resources were different. In The Ears of Hermes: Communication, Images, and Identity in the Classical World, renowned scholar and author Maurizio Bettini explores these different cultural experiences, choosing paths through this territory that are diverse and sometimes unexpected: a little-known variant of a myth or legend, such as that of Brutus pretending, like Hamlet, to be a Fool; a proverb, like lupus in fabula (the wolf in the tale), that expresses the sense of foreboding aroused by the sudden arrival of someone who was just the subject of conversation; or great works, like Plautus' Amphitruo and Vergil's Aeneid, where we encounter the mysteries of the Doppelgänger and of "doubles" fabricated to ease the pain of nostalgia. Or the etymology of a word-its own "story"-leads us down some unforeseen avenue of discovery. While scholarly in presentation, this book, in an elegant English translation by William Michael Short, will appeal not only to classicists but also students, as well as to anthropologists and historians of art and literature beyond classics.

Book Hearing Loss

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2004-12-17
  • ISBN : 0309092965
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Hearing Loss written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-12-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.
