Book Open Hearts Closed Doors

Download or read book Open Hearts Closed Doors written by Nicholas T. Pruitt and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of mainline Protestant responses to immigrants and refugees during the twentieth century Open Hearts, Closed Doors uncovers the largely overlooked role that liberal Protestants played in fostering cultural diversity in America and pushing for new immigration laws during the forty years following the passage of the restrictive Immigration Act of 1924. These efforts resulted in the complete reshaping of the US cultural and religious landscape. During this period, mainline Protestants contributed to the national debate over immigration policy and joined the charge for immigration reform, advocating for a more diverse pool of newcomers. They were successful in their efforts, and in 1965 the quota system based on race and national origin was abolished. But their activism had unintended consequences, because the liberal immigration policies they supported helped to end over three centuries of white Protestant dominance in American society. Yet, Pruitt argues, in losing their cultural supremacy, mainline Protestants were able to reassess their mission. They rolled back more strident forms of xenophobia, substantively altering the face of mainline Protestantism and laying foundations for their responses to today’s immigration debates. More than just a historical portrait, this volume is a timely reminder of the power of religious influence in political matters.

Oliphant knew that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of children dealing with those same issues. After working in a residential facility, she finally decided, despite the fact that she was already a single mother, to take in foster children. With love, patience, and the belief that every child deserves a chance, S. Oliphant set out to battle the system and change the lives of children who are often forgotten. With Open Doors, Open Hearts, we really can make the world a better place for these children.

We want to be used by Him and to experience the peace and fulfillment He wants for us. Yet it’s all too easy to fall into living mechanically, with a rule-based approach to the Christian life, or to focus on getting what we want when we want it. Even when we want to be willing, saying yes to whatever God asks often feels scary, and the distractions of this world get in the way. Vivian Mabuni knows this all too well, but she’s discovered that open-handed living starts with an intentional posture of the heart. Through surrender to His will, we draw closer to God in a way that makes our day-to-day lives more purposeful, powerful, and pleasing to Him. With Vivian’s warm encouragement in Open Hands, Willing Heart, you’ll learn how to step out in courageous trust as you invite God to give and take—and move and work—in your life as He sees fit. Book Open Hearts and Open Minds Open Doors

Download or read book Open Hearts and Open Minds Open Doors written by John Fox and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-06-19 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open Hearts & Open Minds Open Doors—Volume I & II, intends to stimulate creative thought. John K. Fox, Ph.D., explains the source of his opinions and his approach to creativity and life by referencing his experiences. The Open Hearts & Open Minds Open Doors series is best understood if we consider that the North and South Poles of our Earth, and the flow of Electrical Current, share the same essence as described in the Oriental concept of the Yin and the Yang. That theme-central is that the Female and the Male are not Opposite Sexes—they are Essential-Inseparable-Compatibles. Dr. Fox asserts that the essential difference between the Oriental and the Occidental is well illustrated in the depiction of the fat-bellied Buddha. The Buddha was in truth, a thin man. According to Oriental perception, the belly (the umbilical) represents the center of each person. In moments of personal sadness, the Occidental might say, “my heart is breaking.” The Oriental might be more inclined to feel that the human longing for comfort originates in the abdomen. Yet, we Occidentals share the Oriental abdominal perspective when we reference the inner strength found within a person, colloquially, as, “having guts!”

Book The Power of Hospitality

Book excerpt: God's plan for everyone who professes the name of Christ, both men and women, includes hospitality. No one is exempt, from pastor to people. An open heart, open hand and open home is God's divine design to open the hearts of people everywhere it is practiced. Hospitality connects the heart of God and the heart of true ministry for every believer, yet something dramatic has happened in our hearts, closing the doors of our homes, causing Christianity Today to ask, "Whatever Happened to Hospitality?" What about your life? Do you have an open heart, open hand and open home to others... to strangers? The Apostle Paul reminds we must all be "given to hospitality." Pastors and leaders must be "lovers of hospitality." And the Apostle Peter declared, "The end of all things is at hand... use hospitality ... without grudging." Here is hidden power reserved by God for those who dare to practice it. It is PERSONAL, it is PRACTICAL, and it is PROPHETIC! The Power of Hospitality will change your life, your family, your congregation... yes even your city and your world if your will let it.

Download or read book Open Heart written by Stephen Westaby and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In gripping prose, one of the world's leading cardiac surgeons lays bare both the wonder and the horror of a life spent a heartbeat away from death When Stephen Westaby witnessed a patient die on the table during open-heart surgery for the first time, he was struck by the quiet, determined way the surgeons walked away. As he soon understood, this detachment is a crucial survival strategy in a profession where death is only a heartbeat away. In Open Heart, Westaby reflects on over 11,000 surgeries, showing us why the procedures have never become routine and will never be. With astonishing compassion, he recounts harrowing and sometimes hopeful stories from his operating room: we meet a pulseless man who lives with an electric heart pump, an expecting mother who refuses surgery unless the doctors let her pregnancy reach full term, and a baby who gets a heart transplant-only to die once it's in place. For readers of Atul Gawande's Being Mortal and of Henry Marsh's Do No Harm, Open Heart offers a soul-baring account of a life spent in constant confrontation with death.
