Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the century, the United States is on the verge of losing its vote in the General Assembly for non-payment of its arrears. There are eerie parallels between the domestic debate over the United Nations in 1999 and the struggles over the League of Nations in 1919. Why, many ask, are Americans the first to create international organizations and the first to abandon them? What is it about the American political culture that breeds both the most ardent supporters and the most vocal detractors of international organization? And why can't they find any common ground? In seeking to uncover the roots of American ambivalence toward international organization, this political history presents the first major analysis of U.S. attitudes toward both the United Nations and the League of Nations. It traces eight themes that have resurfaced again and again in congressional and public debates over the course of this century: exceptionalism, sovereignty, nativism and racism, unilateralism, security, commitments, reform, and burden-sharing. It assesses recent domestic political trends and calls for the development of two interactive political compacts--one domestic and one international--to place U.S.-UN relations on a new footing. Book The Expanding Roles of Chinese Americans in U S China Relations

Download or read book The Expanding Roles of Chinese Americans in U S China Relations written by Peter Koehn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the historical and contemporary involvement of Chinese Americans from diverse walks of life in U.S.-China relations. The contributors present new evidence and fresh perspectives on familiar and unfamiliar national and transnational networks - including families, businesspersons, community newspapers, students, lobbyists, philanthropists, and scientists - and consider the likely future impact of such contacts on the most important bilateral relationship at the start of the new millennium. The volume makes a multidisciplinary contribution to understanding the extensive and vital roles and promise of Chinese Americans at this critical juncture in U.S.-China relations, and to revealing the importance of migrants as actors in contemporary global politics. The assessments shared by the contributors suggest that the nature and scope of the Chinese American involvement, particularly in global civil society networks, increasingly will determine the outcome of state-to-state relations between the United States and the PRC.

Download or read book Dreamland written by Carly Goodman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world of border walls and obstacles to migration, a lottery where winners can gain permanent residency in the United States sounds too good to be true. Just as unlikely is the idea that the United States would make such visas available to foster diversity within a country where systemic racism endures. But in 1990, the United States Diversity Visa Lottery was created to do just that. Dreamland tells the surprising story of this unlikely government program and its role in American life as well as the global story of migration. Historian Carly Goodman takes readers from Washington, D.C., where proponents deployed a colorblind narrative about our "nation of immigrants" to secure visas for white immigrants, to the African countries where it flourished and fostered dreams of going to America. From the post office to the internet, aspiring emigrants, visa agents, and others embraced the lottery and tried their luck in a time of austerity and limits. Rising African immigration to the United States has enriched American life, created opportunities for mobility, and nourished imagined possibilities. But the promise of the American dream has been threatened by the United States' embrace of anti-immigrant policies and persistent anti-Black racism.

Book Interpreting U S China Taiwan Relations

Download or read book Interpreting U S China Taiwan Relations written by Xiabing Li and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2003-02-27 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting U.S.- China-Taiwan Relations presents an up-to-date, multidisciplinary approach to this often troublesome relationship through essays written by experts in the fields of political science, economics, military science, history and communications. It begins with a focus on the relationship between the U.S. and China as China presses forward with new development while the United States encourages a balance of power in East Asia. It evaluates the successes and failures of the relationship and the forces behind the stands that they take that feed the stress of the relationship. The second group of essays deals with the relationship between China and Taiwan. They examine the recent changes and tentativeness surrounding the situation caused by the death of Deng Xiaoping and the social and economic problems of China, yet communicate a tremendous optimism that a breakthrough will occur in the future. The final essays explore the evolution of China's perceptions of its international environment as it begins to understand and respond to external circumstances better and more positively.
