Book excerpt: Of the solar cooling options available open cycle solid desiccant cooling looks very promising. A brief review of the experimental and analytical efforts to date shows that within the last 10 years thermal performance has doubled. Research centers have been developed to explore new materials and geometry options and to improve and validate mathematical models that can be used by design engineers to develop new product lines. Typical results from the Solar Energy Research Institute's (SERI) Desiccant Cooling Research Program are shown. Innovative ideas for new cycles and spinoff benefits provide incentives to continue research in this promising field.

Book An Overview of Open cycle Desiccant Cooling Systems and Materials

Download or read book An Overview of Open cycle Desiccant Cooling Systems and Materials written by R. K. Collier and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desiccant cooling systems process water vapor in the earth's atmosphere to produce cooling. Since mass transfer occurs between the system and its environment, they are commonly referred to as "open-cycle" systems. These systems all use a liquid or solid material called a desiccant to remove water vapor from the air. The process by which water is removed is most often adsorption of the solid desiccants and absorption in the liquid desiccants

Book Desiccant Assisted Cooling

Download or read book Desiccant Assisted Cooling written by Carlos Eduardo Leme Nóbrega and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing concern with indoor air quality has led to air-quality standards with increased ventilation rates. Although increasing the volume flow rate of outside air is advisable from the perspective of air-quality, it is detrimental to energy consumption, since the outside air has to be brought to the comfort condition before it is insufflated to the conditioned ambient. Moreover, the humidity load carried within outside air has challenging HVAC engineers to design cooling units which are able to satisfactorily handle both sensible and latent contributions to the thermal load. This constitutes a favorable scenario for the use of solid desiccants to assist the cooling units. In fact, desiccant wheels have been increasingly applied by HVAC designers, allowing distinct processes for the air cooling and dehumidification. In fact, the ability of solid desiccants in moisture removal is effective enough to allow the use of evaporative coolers, in opposition to the traditional vapor-compression cycle, resulting in an ecologically sound system which uses only water as the refrigerant. Desiccant Assisted Cooling: Fundamentals and Applications presents different approaches to the mathematical modeling and simulation of desiccant wheels, as well as applications in thermal comfort and humidity controlled environments. Experts in the field discuss topics from enthalpy, lumped models for heat and mass transfer, and desiccant assisted radiant cooling systems, among others. Aimed at air-conditioning engineers and thermal engineering researchers, this book can also be used by graduate level students and lecturers in the field.

Book REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING

Download or read book REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING written by AHMADUL AMEEN and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a concise, systematic treatment of essential theories and practical aspects of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. It is designed for students pursuing courses in mechanical engineering both at diploma and degree level with a view to equipping them with a fundamental background necessary to understand the latest methodologies used for the design of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. After reviewing the physical principles, the text focuses on the refrigeration cycles commonly used in air-conditioning applications in tropical climates. The subject of psychrometry for analysing the various thermodynamic processes in air conditioning is particularly dealt with in considerable detail. The practical design problems require comprehensive use of tables and charts prepared by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This text incorporates such tables and charts so that the students are exposed to solving real-life design problems with the help of ASHRAE Tables. Finally, the book highlights the features, characteristics and selection criteria of hardware including the control equipment. It also provides the readers with the big picture in respect of the latest developments such as thermal storage air conditioning, desiccant cooling, chilled ceiling cooling, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort. Besides the students, the book would be immensely useful to practising engineers as a ready reference.
