Book Investigation of Foaming Behaviors in Injection Molding Using Mold Pressure Profile

Download or read book Investigation of Foaming Behaviors in Injection Molding Using Mold Pressure Profile written by John Won S. Lee and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is intended to improve the understanding of foaming behaviors in various foam injection molding processes: structural foam molding, gas counter pressure molding, and gas counter pressure with mold opening. The foaming behavior in foam injection molding is different from foam extrusion in two ways. First, foaming occurs in a confined volume, which consists of a mold, whereas, it occurs in an open environment in foam extrusion. And second, while the foaming behavior in foam extrusion does not change with time once the steady state is reached, foam injection molding is on the other hand, time-dependent. These differences made it very challenging to study the foaming behaviors in foam injection molding. In this thesis, experiments were first conducted in foam extrusion to understand the effects of processing and material parameters on cell nucleation and growth behaviors. Subsequently, the knowledge obtained from the foam extrusion experiments was transferred to the foam injection molding process and the fundamental foaming mechanisms in foam injection molding were developed by conducting extensive experiments. Four processing parameters were mainly studied in this thesis: injection speed, void fraction setting (i.e., shot size), nitrogen content, and gate resistance. The experimental results revealed that the mold pressure profile during the foam injection molding process governed its foaming behaviors. Furthermore, by analyzing the mold pressure profile during the structural foam molding, it was possible to predict the achievable cell density in structural foam molding based on the foam extrusion results. When the gas counter pressure was employed, the analysis of the foaming behavior was relatively easier since the cell nucleation did not occur during the injection stage. However, the cell density that was achieved by using the gas counter pressure was generally lower than that obtained in structural foam molding due to the lower pressure drop rate caused by the use of the gas counter pressure. It was also discovered that the use of mold opening in combination with the gas counter pressure was very effective when uniform cell structure with a high void fraction was desired in addition to class-A surface quality.

Book Polymer Chemistry

Download or read book Polymer Chemistry written by Sebastian Koltzenburg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded the Literature Prize of the VCI This comprehensive textbook describes the synthesis, characterization and technical and engineering applications of polymers. Polymers are unique molecules and have properties different from any other class of materials. We encounter them in everyday life, not only in the form of the well-known, large-volume plastics such as PE or PP or the many other special polymers, some of which are very specifically modified but also in nature as polymeric biomolecules, such as DNA. Our life, as we know it, would not only be completely different without macromolecules but it would also be biologically impossible. This textbook provides a broad knowledge of the basic concepts of macromolecular chemistry and the unique properties of this class of materials. Environmentally relevant topics, such as biopolymers and microplastic, which should not be missing in a contemporary textbook are also covered. Building on basic knowledge of organic chemistry and thermodynamics, the book presents an easy-to-understand yet in-depth picture of this very dynamic and increasingly important interdisciplinary science that involves elements of chemistry, physics, engineering, and the life sciences. Readers of this work can confirm their understanding of the text at the end of each chapter by working through a selection of exercises. In writing the book, great importance was attached to good readability despite the necessary depth of detail. It is a book that is just as suitable for students of chemistry and related courses as it is for the applied scientist in an industrial environment. The first edition of this work is so far the only textbook on polymer chemistry to be awarded the Literature Prize of the Fund of the German Chemical Industry Association in 2015.
