Book Which Way to Starboard

Download or read book Which Way to Starboard written by Guy G. Lemieux and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one point after the boom vang broke loose, the boom and the sail shifted to a higher position. I didnt like the loss of control this caused. The boat was swinging from 0 to 20 degrees in jerky motions, lifting and heeling. The boom vang had been ripped out of its housing. I had an idea what to do and told Roxanne what I had in mind. At a certain moment, with her help holding up the boom vang in a certain way, I would let go of the rudder and lunge forward to grab the creature from her hand and plunge its little head into the second available hole, a slot just under the boom. This she understood, but all the while I was under great stress, anxious for my daughters life and mine. The wind was quite strong and I didnt want the boat to flip over not there, away from any available help. We were two miles from shore in any direction. I checked the waves and wind and then turned the boat into the wind. On my signal to Roxanne, I lurched forward and grabbed the beastly creature and shakily shoved its head in the hole. I then turned the boat back to windward and pulled in on the sheet that pulled the boom back to its correct position. Everything was fine again. In a plastic bag hanging from the boom near the mast were my cigarettes and a lighter. Thats where Roxanne was also handy. She passed me a cigarette and my lighter and I lit it and took a big drag. Ah The rest of the day went beautifully. In the same bag we had a nice light lunch (gourmet style), a couple of baloney sandwiches, and two cans of pop.

Book The Dark Side of Liberace

Download or read book The Dark Side of Liberace written by Spero Pastos and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-02-18 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Liberaces trial in the late fifties, Lee, as he was familiarly called, was critically reviewed by Cassandra (a former colonel in the British army) in his daily column in Londons Daily Mirror. Cassandra wrote, He is the summit of sex, the pinnacle of masculine, feminine, and neuter. Everything that he, she, and it can ever want. This deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavored, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love has had the biggest reception and impact on London since Charlie Chaplin arrived at the same station! At the same time, Liberace had recently completed his ABC seven-year contract that had gone viral via international and national television, but he recognized a new and very popular confidential magazine that was beginning to create unimaginable curiosity in 1950s America, suggesting that he was homosexual. Liberace died in February of 1987, but the story of his estate was not settled until long after. His attorney, Joel Strote, managed to stuff the estate for his own, and that forced a very ugly trial both between the Liberace family both in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where Liberace made his home for tax benefits. The outcomes of the trials were in Strotes favor, though Ida Mae Liberace, Liberaces niece, claimed that there were hundreds of millions of dollars in the estate secreted in an account in Switzerland. Liberaces burial was in Forest Lawn overlooking Warner Brothers Studio and where Liberace filmed his disastrous film during the 1950s entitled Sincerely Yours.

Book The Occupation of Eliza Goode

Download or read book The Occupation of Eliza Goode written by Shelley Mickle and published by Morgan James Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eliza Goode is born into a New Orleans’ parlor house in the mid 1800s. Sold as a courtesan on her seventeenth birthday, she flees her arranged future at the outbreak of the Civil War. She is passed up through Mississippi’s plantations from one slave quarters to another until she emerges at the Confederates’ Camp Corinth and is swept along to the battle of Manassas. Along the way, she meets Bennett McFerrin and his wife, Rissa, who follows her husband to war. Using guile and her extraordinary beauty, Eliza transforms herself from camp follower prostitute to laundress, nurse, and caregiver to Rissa when Bennett is taken prisoner by Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Fort Donelson in Clarksville, Tennessee. Her final transformation frees her from her past. Eliza’s story is more than a tale of war, transcendence, and hardship. It is a story told in modern times by Susan Masters, a novelist in Boston, whose cousin, Hadley, finds Eliza’s letters in an attic and implores Susan to write Eliza’s story to answer questions she seeks for her own life. Hadley has a shameful secret of her own—a past, about which she cannot even bring herself to speak. Set in the second summer of the Iraq war and three years after 9/11, this is not your usual Civil War novel. This story says much about how we became who we are, and who we might have become, had the Civil War not saved us as a nation.

Download or read book The Meaning of Thought written by Markus Gabriel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From populist propaganda attacking knowledge as ‘fake news’ to the latest advances in artificial intelligence, human thought is under unprecedented attack today. If computers can do what humans can do and they can do it much faster, what’s so special about human thought? In this new book, bestselling philosopher Markus Gabriel steps back from the polemics to re-examine the very nature of human thought. He conceives of human thinking as a ‘sixth sense’, a kind of sense organ that is closely tied our biological reality as human beings. Our thinking is not a form of data processing but rather the linking together of images and imaginary ideas which we process in different sensory modalities. Our time frame expands far beyond the present moment, as our ideas and beliefs stretch far beyond the here and now. We are living beings and the whole of evolution is built into our life story. In contrast to some of the exaggerated claims made by proponents of AI, Gabriel argues that our thinking is a complex structure and organic process that is not easily replicated and very far from being superseded by computers. With his usual wit and intellectual verve, Gabriel combines philosophical insight with pop culture to set out a bold defence of the human and a plea for an enlightened humanism for the 21st century. This timely book will be of great value to anyone interested in the nature of human thought and the relations between human beings and machines in an age of rapid technological change.
