Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ontology It is believed that the treatise will be useful in more clearly defining certain philosophical terms in frequent use through out Swedenborg's scientific writings. Although it was probably written at some period prior to the author's illumination, it seems quite reasonable to infer that the meaning of those terms remained essentially the same in his Theological works. Book New Ways of Ontology Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Ways of Ontology Classic Reprint written by Nicolai Hartmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Ways of Ontology It goes without saying that in as summary a discussion as the present one we cannot do justice to medieval metaphysics. But here our concern is not with medieval metaphysics but with contemporary issues. For these, it is imperative that we achieve a clear view of certain fundamental traits of the onto logical views which were at the basis of that metaphysics. We must learn from the mistakes of these old ontological views, so that any and every attempt at a new ontology may dissociate itself unambiguously and consciously from all such errors. The critical epistemology of the modern age from Descartes down to Kant did not succeed in completely replacing the old ontology with a new doctrine of equal value. But it had so thoroughly destroyed its presuppositions that a metaphysics erected on the old basis was no longer possible. The Critique of Pure Reason, in which the work of thorough houseclean ing reached its end, marks a historical boundary beyond which ontological thinking all but vanishes. This is noteworthy, be cause the Kantian critique was actually not leveled against the foundations of the old ontology but rather against the specula tive-rational metaphysics which had been built upon it. Book An Unorthodox Conception of Being

Download or read book An Unorthodox Conception of Being written by William Ellsworth Hermance and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Unorthodox Conception of Being: A Synthetic Philosophy of Ontology The first draft of this work was written in the latter part of the nineteenth century. During the decade or more since its inception a wider reading has revealed to the author that, although the ideas herein expressed are independent, they, with few exceptions, have already been expressed by others. This might be taken as demonstrating that "There is nothing new under the sun," but this is true only in part. There certainly are new forms. Not only new forms in the arrangement of the material, but also new forms of the expression of ideas. Although each idea embraced in the composition of a conception might be old, yet a different combination of these ideas would give a philosophy of existence differing in many respects from any philosophy heretofore given and possibly more nearly in accord with the actual facts of Being. We grant that the ordinary material elements are not new; that they have been known for centuries, and have existed from infinity; yet combinations of these elements are constantly being made, giving us compounds that in all probability have not before existed on this earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Philosophy: Comprising Logic and Ontology, or General Metaphysics Second: It was judged best, also, for the interests of learn ers in general, to omit the discussion of the modes and figures Of the syllogism; for, in practice they are not attended to, even bv those who actually argue in form, the simple rules of demonstration sufficing for all practical purposes, and being all that IS even really useful in the strictest argumentation. On the other hand, it was deemed expedient to introduce some matters that pertain to branches of Philosophy, whose full treatment is appropriate to another volume; e. Book Transcendental Ontology

Download or read book Transcendental Ontology written by Markus Gabriel and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcendental Ontology in German Idealism: Schelling and Hegel sheds remarkable light on a question central to post-Kantian philosophy: after the Copernican Revolution in philosophy, what can philosophy say about the world or reality as such? What remains of ontology's task after Kant? This is a question often overlooked in contemporary scholarship on German Idealism. Markus Gabriel offers a refreshing reinvigoration of a range of questions concerning scepticism, corporeality, freedom, the question of being, the absolute and the modal status of our determinations and judgments, all crucial to our understanding of the truly radical nature of post-Kantian philosophy. Gabriel's assessment of the experiments undertaken in post-Kantian ontology reaffirms Schelling's and Hegel's place at the heart of contemporary metaphysics. The book shows how far we still have to go in mining the thought of Hegel and Schelling and how exciting, as a result, we can expect twenty-first century philosophy to be.
