Book excerpt: Integrated access to distributed, heterogeneous information sources is becoming more and more important for organizations, research collaborations, and businesses in order to efficiently manage and leverage existing knowledge. In this book a novel approach for virtual information integration based on Semantic Web technologies is presented. Compared to traditional approaches, the system is able to integrate distributed, heterogeneous data sources based on ontologies. This strategy enables a concept- based approach, where data is described based on its meaning, instead of a functional data model. The presented approach is very flexible, since no explicit global schema needs to be maintained. New data sources are mapped to domain ontologies published on the Web (or intranet) and once they are registered at the system, they can be transparently accessed together with all the other information based on powerful semantic queries. Combined with latest research towards new graphical user interfaces for Linked Data on the Semantic Web, the proposed approach is well suited for large-scale collaborative knowledge sharing in research as well as in the industry.

Real Time data translation is obtained through a mapping which contains the necessary instructions about the localisation of the information, the assembling directives and how the final data is presented. Therefore, the quality of mapping reflects accuracy and reliability of the data integration system. This book provides several contributions to research in data integration systems: starting from the architectural point of view, we define a system based on several ontologies that are used to describe the meta-data involved in the different integration steps. The book finds that developing, improving, and validating new laboratory tools based on recent scientific advances could significantly improve our ability to understand the hazards and risks posed by chemicals. This new knowledge would lead to much more informed environmental regulations and dramatically reduce the need for animal testing because the new tests would be based on human cells and cell components. Substantial scientific efforts and resources will be required to leverage these new technologies to realize the vision, but the result will be a more efficient, informative and less costly system for assessing the hazards posed by industrial chemicals and pesticides.
