Book The Behavior of Communicating

Download or read book The Behavior of Communicating written by W. John Smith and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. John Smith enlarges ethology's perspective on communication and takes it in new directions. Traditionally, ethnological analysis has focused on the motivational states of displaying animals. The Behavior of Communicating emphasizes messages. After developing the concept of messages and discussing their forms, Smith turns to the evolution of display behavior. He then revises the traditional ethnological concept of displays and in a final chapter develops the further concept of formalized interactions.

Book excerpt: Founded in 1856 on the shores of Lake Erie's Sandusky Bay, Winous Point Shooting Club is the oldest continuously operated duck hunting club in America. It has, in that respect, seen a lot of history. Among its early members were Jay Cooke, chief financier of the Union during the Civil War; John Hay, secretary to Abraham Lincoln and secretary of state under three U.S. presidents; Charles F. Brush, a pioneer in the commercial development of electricity; and many other notable historical figures. Each of these men forged separate legacies in industry, science, and government. But together, as sportsmen, they helped build a legacy of habitat and wildlife conservation that has been even longer lasting, and continues to have a greater positive impact on the life of the nation. Winous Point: 150 Years of Waterfowling and Conservation tells the story of the birth and growth not only of an Ohio duck hunting club, but of the modern wetland conservation movement. From its founding by amateur naturalists with a hunger for collecting, categorizing, and understanding the region's flora and fauna to its battles over market hunting, spring shooting, baiting, and more, Winous has made history in its own right. It was the first duck hunting club in the nation to ban spring shooting of waterfowl, the first to appoint a wildlife biologist to manage its 5,000-acre property, and the first to launch major wetland research and educational programs to advance the study of wetland and waterfowl management. More recently, it became the first hunting club to establish a nonprofit land conservancy, which it did on the cusp of its 150th anniversary, securing its precious wetlands-and its legacy-for generations to come. Deluxe clamshell edition also available.

Book Behaviours Influencing the Distribution of Great Blue Herons Ardea Herodias Fannini in the Strait of Georgia British Columbia microform

Download or read book Behaviours Influencing the Distribution of Great Blue Herons Ardea Herodias Fannini in the Strait of Georgia British Columbia microform written by James Kenneth Kenyon and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias fannini), a nonmigratory subspecies endemic to the Pacific Northwest of North America, is COSEWIC-listed in Canada as a species of 'special concern'. The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), conducted since 1969, indicate an ongoing decline in numbers. Recent findings show that nest and colony abandonments are common, and are strongly associated with disturbance by bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Vanishing bearings of herons departing foraging sites were strongly associated with colony locations, and led to the discovery of small, previously unknown colonies. A probabilistic model predicted that dispersed nesting offers increased nestling safety under high eagle depredation. Ideal free distributions accounting for colony locations as well as foraging-site size and quality best matched the observed distribution of foraging herons. These findings support the hypothesis that great blue herons have redistributed into smaller, more widely-scattered colonies as eagle numbers have recovered over recent decades.

Book Brood Provisioning and Nest Survival in the Great Blue Heron Ardea Herodias

Download or read book Brood Provisioning and Nest Survival in the Great Blue Heron Ardea Herodias written by Margaret Maginley Meserve and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Altricial birds are dependent on their parents for thermoregulation, nutrition, and protection from predators. They experience rapid growth during the post-hatching period and grow to nearly adult size by the time they fledge. Wading birds such as herons, egrets, and ibis provide parental care for longer periods than most other species with altricial young. Adult Great blue herons (Ardea herodias) (GBHE), the largest wading bird in North America, provide parental care for approximately four months. This species forages in a wide variety of wetland and early successional habitats, is generally piscivorous, abundant in most coastal areas, and long-lived. From 1983-2009 the number of coastal breeding pairs of Great blue heron (GBHEs) in Maine declined by 64% and the number of occupied islands on which these birds breed declined by 40%. In 2007 the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife listed the GBHE as a Species of Special Concern, and in 2009 expanded its annual monitoring to include inland colonies. However, it is unknown if the associated pressures on populations nesting in inland colonies are the same as the coastal colonies. This study compared the relationship between parental care and nest survival of GBHEs in one coastal and one inland colony. With a total of 411 hours of colony monitoring and 123 observed brood provisioning events; this study is the most thorough examination of parental care and nestling behavior of GBHEs in the northeastern portion of their range. Brood provisioning rates in the first two weeks post-hatch were significantly greater in the inland site (n=11; nests) however this difference did not affect nest fate (>̲ 1 chick fledged). Brood provisioning rates in 2-4 week old chicks differed between sites with greater rates of provisioning in the coastal site. In both sites the number of nestlings within a nest was positively correlated with the number that subsequently fledged per nest (inland: n=41; coastal: n=35). Daily nest survival was positively associated with an increasing number of nestlings, earlier hatch dates, and increased brood provisioning rates for 1-2 week old chicks. These results suggest that the number of nestlings per nest can be used as a proxy for nest success in GBHE colonies in the northeastern part of their range.

Download or read book Cooperation among Animals written by Lee Alan Dugatkin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the depiction of nature "red in tooth and claw," cooperation is actually widespread in the animal kingdom. Various types of cooperative behaviors have been documented in everything from insects to primates, and in every imaginable ecological scenario. Yet why animals cooperate is still a hotly contested question in literature on evolution and animal behavior. This book examines the history surrounding the study of cooperation, and proceeds to examine the conceptual, theoretical and empirical work on this fascinating subject. Early on, it outlines the four different categories of cooperation -- reciprocal altruism, kinship, group-selected cooperation and byproduct mutualism -- and ties these categories together in a single framework called the Cooperator's Dilemma. Hundreds of studies on cooperation in insects, fish, birds and mammals are reviewed. Cooperation in this wide array of taxa includes, but is not limited to, cooperative hunting, anti-predator behavior, foraging, sexual coalitions, grooming, helpers-at-the nest, territoriality, 'policing' behavior and group thermoregulation. Each example outlined is tied back to the theoretical framework developed early on, whenever the data allows. Future experiments designed to further elucidate a particular type of cooperation are provided throughout the book.
