The main body of the text describes the quantitative growth of the educational system and is organized into seven topics: characteristics of the population, school enrollment, the proliferation of educational institutions, university enrolment, enrolment in other post-secondary institutions, and the financing of the system. It contains much specialized statistical material including 46 charts and 225 tables, and will be an excellent work of reference.

Download or read book Progressive Education written by Theodore Michael Christou and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the twentieth century, North American public school curricula moved away from the classics and the humanities, and towards ‘progressive’ subjects such as health and social studies. This book delves into how progressivist thinking transformed the rhetoric and the structure of schooling during the first half of the twentieth century, with echoes that reverberate strongly today, and investigates historical meanings of progressive education. Theodore Michael Christou closely examines the case of interwar Ontario, where the entire landscape of public education, including curricula and avenues to post-secondary study, were radically transformed over just twenty years. Christou contextualizes this reformist thinking in light of a social, political, and economic climate of change, which seemed to demand schools that could actively relate learning to the real world. Through its examination of educational journals published throughout the interwar period and previously unexplored archival sources, this book illuminates how the present structure of curricula and schooling were achieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education: Ontario's Preoccupation, a companion to the author's seven-volume series, ONTARIO'S EDUCATIVE SOCIETY, reviews the main highlights of educational development in Ontario, concentrating on interpretation rather than statistics. Written for everyone seriously interested in education, whether specialist or general reader, this volume provides an analysis and overview of the key issues that have arisen in education in the last decade and evaluates the prospects for formal education in the future. Among the topics Professor Fleming discusses in detail in this volume are the role of formal education, the expansion of the educational system, the quest for organizational efficiency, the relationship between the province and the universities, educational agencies outside the formal system, research and development, the financing of education, and the questions of religion and language. Education: Ontario's Preoccupation is indispensable as an introduction to the series ONTARIO'S EDUCATIVE SOCIETY, and provides in one volume a compendium of facts and analysis of the main issues in the province's educational development.
Download or read book Transnational Social Policy written by Luann Good Gingrich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transnational Social Policy highlights the changing face of social policy and social work against the background of accelerating transnationalization of economies, labour markets, education, social services, and care. The contributions of this book provide unique case examples on the interplay of social policies, mobile populations, and travelling knowledge about welfare within an increasingly asymmetrical global context. This innovative volume also includes historical studies on the transformations of social policies during the last century and reflects the developments of social welfare across the Global North and the Global South. With its emphasis on theoretical assumptions of policy translation, the case studies show the importance of adjustments, negotiations, and participation of various actors in the transnational social field of welfare production. Thus, within ever-shifting contexts of new political agendas promoting the free play of the market and a neoliberal agenda of competition and austerity, this insightful book reveals new transnational forms of social exclusion that function within, across, and in-between nation-states. Presenting a major and much needed addition to current discussions on globalization and the increasing complexity of worldwide social relations, this volume will be of interest to scholars and graduate students interested in fields such as Social Policy, Social Work, Public Administration, Development Studies, Political Science, and Sociology, as well as many interdisciplinary fields including Global Studies, International Development Studies, and Immigration and Settlement Studies.

Book excerpt: Lifelong Education for Adults: An International Handbook is the first work intended to offer international, encyclopedic coverage of research and studies in the whole field of adult education. With 127 articles written by international specialists, this work will be an invaluable reference source for all those who are engaged in educational activities for adults, either as full-time planners/administrators of educational programmes, or part-time adult educators. There are, for example, articles on education for work and for living, on population education, peace and environmental education, and on learning for personal development and role fulfilment. Conceptual frameworks, practical issues relating to instructional methods, counselling, curriculum and evaluation, and developments in distance learning, group learning, and adult learning are some of the topics discussed. Systems of adult education worldwide, as well as adult education processes and practices, are covered region by region. The problems and initiatives of the developing countries are given attention alongside those of advanced countries. The collection of articles assembled in this Handbook is unique in the range and depth of treatment given to the field of adult education. This volume will thus be of great interest to all engaged in educational activities for adults, in adult schools, community centres, institutions of higher education, as well as educationalists, planners, and decision-makers throughout the world who are involved in adult education at all levels.
