Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the twentieth century, North American public school curricula moved away from the classics and the humanities, and towards 'progressive' subjects such as health and social studies. This book delves into how progressivist thinking transformed the rhetoric and the structure of schooling during the first half of the twentieth century, with echoes that reverberate strongly today, and investigates historical meanings of progressive education. Theodore Michael Christou closely examines the case of interwar Ontario, where the entire landscape of public education, including curricula and avenues to post-secondary study, were radically transformed over just twenty years. Christou contextualizes this reformist thinking in light of a social, political, and economic climate of change, which seemed to demand schools that could actively relate learning to the real world. Through its examination of educational journals published throughout the interwar period and previously unexplored archival sources, this book illuminates how the present structure of curricula and schooling were achieved.

Book excerpt: Education: Ontario's Preoccupation, a companion to the author's seven-volume series, ONTARIO'S EDUCATIVE SOCIETY, reviews the main highlights of educational development in Ontario, concentrating on interpretation rather than statistics. Written for everyone seriously interested in education, whether specialist or general reader, this volume provides an analysis and overview of the key issues that have arisen in education in the last decade and evaluates the prospects for formal education in the future. Among the topics Professor Fleming discusses in detail in this volume are the role of formal education, the expansion of the educational system, the quest for organizational efficiency, the relationship between the province and the universities, educational agencies outside the formal system, research and development, the financing of education, and the questions of religion and language. Education: Ontario's Preoccupation is indispensable as an introduction to the series ONTARIO'S EDUCATIVE SOCIETY, and provides in one volume a compendium of facts and analysis of the main issues in the province's educational development.

Book Critical Issues in Higher Education

Download or read book Critical Issues in Higher Education written by Michael Kompf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas and papers in this volume primarily showcase the work of a group of new scholars who will lead the next generation of educational practise and inquiry. While the topics explored are critical issues, the ways in which these new scholars have chosen to address them illustrates the diversity of voice, venue and value that has led them to present their work. Education and what it means has entered a new era in which the primary focus on education for the sake of education is strained. An educational free-for-all, in the sense of a no-holds-barred fight, seems in place as competition for market share, effective branding exercises and movement towards a client-based delivery of educational services (on demand as demanded) has been fuelled and compounded by litigation, accreditation, transfer credits and matters of patents, copyrights, ownership and monopoly. The link between education and financial well-being has been co-opted as the key to personal success. Unfortunately, the degree pursuit, often called the “paper chase” has become competitive for learners seeking scholarships, awards and entry into graduate school. This transition indicates movement from becoming well educated to employability potential paralleling much institutional retooling and sustenance of enhanced reputation and fiscal viability.

Book Science and Technology Education Promoting Wellbeing for Individuals Societies and Environments

Download or read book Science and Technology Education Promoting Wellbeing for Individuals Societies and Environments written by Larry Bencze and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides theoretical and practical resources relating to the ‘STEPWISE’ curricular and instructional framework. ‘STEPWISE’ is the acronym for Science & Technology Education Promoting Wellbeing for Individuals, Societies & Environments. It is a framework for organizing teaching and learning domains in ways that prioritize personal and social actions to address ‘critical socioscientific issues’ — that is, controversial decisions by powerful individuals/groups about science and technology (and related fields) that may adversely affect individuals, societies and/or environments. The book contains chapters written by and/or with teachers who have used STEPWISE to guide their instructional practices, as well as chapters written by education scholars who have used a range of theoretical lenses to analyze and evaluate STEPWISE — and, in several cases, described ways in which it relates to (or could relate to) their practices and/or ways in which the framework might logically be amended. Overall, this book offers educators, policy makers and others with resources useful for arranging science and technology education in ways that may assist societies in addressing significant potential personal, social and/or environmental problems — such as dramatic climate change, preventable human diseases, species losses, and social injustices — associated with fields of science and technology.
