What does it take to come back to life? For Jessa-Lynn Morton, the question is not an abstract one. In the wake of her father’s suicide, Jessa has stepped up to manage his failing taxidermy business while the rest of the Morton family crumbles. Her mother starts sneaking into the taxidermy shop to make provocative animal art, while her brother, Milo, withdraws. And Brynn, Milo’s wife—and the only person Jessa’s ever been in love with—walks out without a word. It’s not until the Mortons reach a tipping point that a string of unexpected incidents begins to open up surprising possibilities and second chances. But will they be enough to salvage this family, to help them find their way back to one another? Kristen Arnett’s breakout bestseller is a darkly funny family portrait; a peculiar, bighearted look at love and loss and the ways we live through them together.

Book Only the Dead

  • Author : Bear F. Braumoeller
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2019

Download or read book Only the Dead written by Bear F. Braumoeller and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that war is going out of style has become the conventional wisdom in recent years. But in Only the Dead, award-winning author Bear Braumoeller demonstrates that it shouldn't have. With a rare combination of historical expertise, statistical acumen, and accessible prose, Braumoeller shows that the evidence simply doesn't support the decline-of-war thesis propounded by scholars like Steven Pinker. He argues that the key to understanding trends in warfare lies, not in the spread of humanitarian values, but rather in the formation of international orders--sets of expectations about behavior that allow countries to work in concert, as they did in the Concert of Europe and have done in the postwar Western liberal order. With a nod toward the American sociologist Charles Tilly, who argued that "war made the state and the state made war," Braumoeller shows argues that the same is true of international orders: while they reduce conflict within their borders, they can also clash violently with one another, as the Western and communist orders did throughout the Cold War. Both highly readable and rigorous, Only the Dead offers a realistic assessment of humanity's quest to abolish warfare. While pessimists have been too quick to discount the successes of our attempts to reduce international conflict, optimists are prone to put too much faith in human nature. Reality lies somewhere in between: While the aspirations of humankind to govern its behavior with reason and justice have had shocking success in moderating the harsh dictates of realpolitik, the institutions that we have created to prevent war are unlikely to achieve anything like total success--as evidenced by the multitude of conflicts in recent decades. As the old adage advises us, only the dead have seen the end of war.

Book Immortality

  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Immortality written by Stephen Cave and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a cloud-capped peak where gods and immortals while away their infinite days, and since the dawn of humanity everyone - whether they know it or not - has been trying to climb that mountain. But there are only four paths up its treacherous slope. Throughout history, people have wagered everything on their choice and fought wars against those who've decided differently. Each of these four paths - simply staying alive indefinitely, through magic or medicine; being resurrected; persisting as a soul; or living on through one's legacy - is revealed to us by a historical figure who serves as our guide. It is through these diverse individuals - such as the Egyptian queen Nefertiti; vitamin-obsessed Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling; author Mary Shelley; and Alexander the Great - that we come to understand how many of civilisation's greatest achievements have been born of our need to see our essence endure. As optimistic about the human condition as it is insightful, Immortality takes the reader on an eye-opening journey from the beginnings of civilisation to the present day. Bringing together history and philosophy, this fascinating book both enlightens and entertains, investigating whether it just might be possible to live forever, and whether that's something we should actually aspire to. But its most powerful and arresting argument is this - that it is our very preoccupation with defying mortality that has made our civilisation what it is.

Book Can You Live Forever

  • Pages : 341 pages

Download or read book Can You Live Forever written by Edward W. Reese Ph.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-03-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Reese has long been fascinated with the human aging process and the possibilities of extending human life, and self-awareness beyond its end of life cycle. Therefore, the focus of his book, is based upon understanding the aging process, and possibilities of extending life, and maintaining self-awareness. Following are some highlights from his book: * Can Human Awareness Exist Forever? * The Continued Existence Of Your Life And Awareness. * What Is The Ultimate Question: "With a Healthy Brain, Why Must My Self-Awareness Cease To Exist Because A Vital Body Organ Fails, Or Because I Have A Terminal Illness?" * The Evolving Process to Extending Life. * To Learn Without Study Or Training. Life Expectancy: * How Science Will Extend Life Expectancy, Now, Near Future, and Distant Future. * How Close Can We Come To Immortality? With a greater understanding of the mechanism that causes, or contributes to the aging process, and the subsequent advancements in medicine, and related research discoveries, the prior boundaries of life expectancy will continue to extend dramatically. Dr. Reese believes it is a reasonable expectation that people could be capable of reaching the age of 125-150 years within 80-90 years. It is also Dr. Reese's opinion, that ultimately our continued existence (e.g., our self-awareness) will not be dependent upon the function of the human physical body, which in many respects presents a hindrance to our continued existence beyond our current estimated life span. There are far too many body components that we must depend upon to function effectively in order to maintain our lives, and our continued self-awareness. The vulnerability of critical organs, too many diseases, and human body failures, most often cause premature termination of life, and subsequently the demise of a healthy brain and awareness. Also discussed: * Free Anti-Aging And Life Extension Available To All. * Over Population - The End Of Humanity? * Religious And Spiritual Implications Involving Longevity. * The Human Aging Process. How Do We Slow And Potentially Stop Aging? * Fighting The Aging Process. * How Can I Live Beyond My Normal Life Span? * Brain Transplant To Another Human Body. * Brain Transplant Into AI Humanoid Robot. * AI And Humanoid Robots. * The Future Controlled By AI Humanoid Robots. * Possible Extinction Of Humanity Due To AI Humanoid Robots. * Brain Awareness Transfer. * Implantable Brain Chips And Other Brain Implants. * Human Consciousness Uploading/Downloading To A Computer Or Artificial Brain. * Many Other Related Topics This book will directly, and unapologetically, address the issues of aging, and discuss methods to reduce, or slow the inevitable process, and avoid the most significant, and even hazardous consequences associated with the aging process. The brain and causes of short and long term memory problems are also discussed.

Download or read book How to Live Forever written by Stephen R L Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-01-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immortality is a subject which has long been explored and imagined by science fiction writers. In his intriguing new study, Stephen R.L.Clark argues that the genre of science fiction writing allows investigation of philosophical questions about immortality without the constraints of academic philosophy. He reveals how fantasy accounts of issues such as resurrection, disembodied survival, reincarnation and devices or drugs for preserving life can be used as an important resource for philosophical inquiry and examines how a society of immortals might function through a reading of the vampire myth. How to Live Forever is a compelling study which introduces students and professional philosophers to the possibilities of using science fiction in their work. It includes extensive suggestions for further reading, both fictional and philosophical, and examines the work of such major science fiction authors as Arthur C. Clarke, Frank Herbert, Larry Niven, William Gibson, and Colin Wilson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially, I had intended to write this book in the summer of 2006. At that time, my involvement in the Life Extension Movement was growing, my enthusiasm was palpable; trusted friends and colleagues urged me to undertake the project, noting that it would give momentum to a nascent movement that was a mere blip on the political radar screen and bring needed attention to an issue that many thought might never be discussed seriously in a society that considers death an unpleasant but inevitable reality. Even though I agreed with this analysis, I managed to avoid any serious attempt to start a far-reaching debate on the political, social, and economic consequences of radically extending one’s life into the future. After all, I thought, the technology in this field is still at a nascent stage, antiaging research receives few government grants, controversy abounds in the scientific community as to the mere possibility of indefinite life extension; most elected officials are clueless about it and even a majority of the President’s Council on Bioethics is hostile to the idea. But that being said, I never was one to back down from a good fight. I had read much of the scientific work undertaken by a multitude of scientists determined to understand how and why human beings slowly age, and how we can reverse our demise and extend our lives indefinitely. I disagreed with the naysayers who pompously declare that prolonging life will ruin the environment, cause overpopulation, promote wars over scarce resources, as well as those narrow-minded, quasi—pundits who embraced a number of bogus charges and half-truths intended to impede further research into the causes of the terminal disease of aging. I had more than enough evidence to confront the critics, but for some unknown reason, I lost the internal primal spark necessary to fight back. I thought, should I enter a battle that few know about and even fewer care? Instead of hearing a clarion call to act, I became mired in skepticism, doubt and a growing resignation toward terminal apathy. ...
