Download or read book Only Gypsies Move on Sunday written by Irene McCoy and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Irene McCoy's humorous memoir begins in a blue-collar suburb outside of Chicago. The precocious youngster comes of age during the 1950s while putting up with an authoritative father, fearing the dreaded Commies, and haunted by the horrors of a nuclear holocaust. Later, as a married woman, she resigns herself to repeatedly packing up and following her journalist husband from cramped rooms in the Midwest and New York to accommodations in post-war Germany, none of which were likely to be featured in Better Homes and Gardens. Early on, she finds herself with a two-year-old in a country where she's out of milk and diapers and stores are about to close for the weekend. Aha, so this is what angst is. While the author occasionally embellished a few facts and changed the names of some characters for the sake of privacy, Only Gypsies Move on Sunday will be welcomed by readers who enjoy a sly peek into the often-frantic lives of their contemporaries.
Download or read book I Should Have Married My World History Teacher written by Larry Mccoy and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-09-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's not every kid who falls out of his grandmother's moving car, is labeled a "vandal" by his hometown newspaper, and covers his face with a handkerchief in World History class but gets a passing grade. Say hello to Larry McCoy, a proud son of Frankfort, Indiana. His high school years were raucous ones with his talent for misbehaving so admired he was voted Class Clown in 1955. His was a world of fun and adventure--playing ball, trying to pull down girls' swimming trunks, emceeing a talent show, lying about damage to dad's car--and a world of wonderful food--breaded tenderloins, strawberry pie, and home-made noodles piled on mashed potatoes. He writes lovingly of his grandmother, of a favorite uncle and of his brother Jim who turned an empty field into a baseball diamond where second base was a cow patty. After high school, McCoy hit some bumps at Indiana University where his social life at first was limited to stocking shelves at the A&P. Still, he probably learned more there than he did in college. A flirtation with Catholicism strained relations with his devout Protestant parents. But goofiness and good times won out after McCoy met Irene Kristoff at I.U. She was smart, pretty, and thought he was funny. Rather than having her head examined, Irene contacted a minister and married Larry. He picked the title, "I Should Have Married My World History Teacher," without consulting his bride of more than 60 years. A very wise move.

Download or read book Envisioning Machine Translation in the Information Future written by John S. White and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Envisioning Machine Translation in the Information Future When the organizing committee of AMTA-2000 began planning, it was in that brief moment in history when we were absorbed in contemplation of the passing of the century and the millennium. Nearly everyone was comparing lists of the most important accomplishments and people of the last 10, 100, or 1000 years, imagining the radical changes likely over just the next few years, and at least mildly anxious about the potential Y2K apocalypse. The millennial theme for the conference, “Envisioning MT in the Information Future,” arose from this period. The year 2000 has now come, and nothing terrible has happened (yet) to our electronic infrastructure. Our musings about great people and events probably did not ennoble us much, and whatever sense of jubilee we held has since dissipated. So it may seem a bit obsolete or anachronistic to cast this AMTA conference into visionary themes.

Book excerpt: I'm not all that special, really. Or uncommon. I'm sure there are a lot of girls with old gypsy blood who see the dead, have killer cults hunting their family, and turn into something that gets scary when they panic. Yep. Completely unoriginal, if I do say so myself.Move along. Nothing to see here. Nope. I'm just an ordinary girl.I wish people would believe that.I've been labeled as one thing or another for most of my life:Death Girl.Crazy Gypsy Girl.Gothic Chick.Monster...It took my mother's death for me to finally start getting answers about what's really been going on. Unfortunately, most of the answers come from men...who aren't just men. Somehow, I've gone and landed myself in a world truly filled with monsters, and I'm starting to think this is where I should have been all along.Only...I don't understand what's going on. I'm walking into the middle of a story that's thousands of years old, and I'm the new girl on the block who doesn't have a clue how this world even works. My only guides happen to be the most lethal of the bunch. They decide who lives or dies. They decide who gets stabbed or tortured.Yeah...I've gone and drawn attention to myself, and the ones paying attention are the ones everyone else seems to fear. How do these things always happen to me?**Reverse Harem**Language warning**Sexual content**Dark Humor
