Book excerpt: Online newspapers are often viewed as the answer to a long tradition of dissatisfaction regarding the limited one-way communication focus of the mass media. Nevertheless, these newspapers have been slow in recognising that the fundamental condition for effective web communication is interactivity. While the industry has been given some cause for optimism, online newspapers still offer only limited interactive options on their sites. This book provides a description of the use of this technology by six selected Indonesian online newspapers. A content analysis of these sites reveals that they do not optimally utilise the interactive elements at their disposal. There is therefore, a similarity in the nature of their news delivery to printed newspapers. Consequently, interactive technology has not transformed the limited one-way communication process of the traditional newspaper into an interactive communication process. For mass communication students and researchers, this book gives an idea for conducting further research on online newspapers and online journalism in particular, and on the internet in Indonesia in general.

In some ways, digitization has catalyzed the development of diverse and independent media. Market reforms in favor of liberalization have gone hand in hand with convergence and proliferation to produce a radical increase in the number of media outlets. The number of national television channels has doubled since 1998; commercial radio stations have tripled; and the number of print newspapers has more than quadrupled. This has occurred alongside and in tandem with a rapidly growing online news sector populated by a mixed ecology of established brands and new entrants. In other ways, however, digitization has merely helped to shift the locus of concentrated power from the state to an increasingly consolidated media elite. This article provides a critical review of the forms of media control that have emerged in Indonesia within the past five years (2015-2020), giving special attention to the doxing allegedly faced by several news media and journalistic projects: IndonesiaLeaks; Tempo magazine; and WatchDoc.
