Book Confessions of a Prayer Wimp

Download or read book Confessions of a Prayer Wimp written by Mary Pierce and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your spiritual life more like a fast-food run than an intimate dinner for two?Whether it’s the busy mother’s wish to be Wonder Woman—minus the metal bra—or battles with an exploding hot water heater, or fighting the “Resolutionary War” of New Year’s Day, Mary Pierce understands the dilemmas of being a woman in today’s 24/7 world. From disorganized misery to extreme organizational mania (she used to refer to her children by their household chores: Cat Box Boy, Dishwasher Girl, and Garbage Can Baby), Pierce deals with our fumbling attempts to grow closer to God, encouraging us as she invites us to laugh, cry, love, embrace life, and pray!In her humorous, conversational style, Pierce laughs at her mistakes and her prayers that seem more like advertising jingles (Lord, I need a break today, and Can you hear me now, Lord?). In Confessions of a Prayer Wimp, you’ll come to understand that faith is less about what you are or do or say, and more about who God is—someone who loves you no matter what you do.

Book Aspects of WIMP Dark Matter Searches at Colliders and Other Probes

Download or read book Aspects of WIMP Dark Matter Searches at Colliders and Other Probes written by Enrico Morgante and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis covers several theoretical aspects of WIMP (weakly interacting massive particles) dark matter searches, with a particular emphasis on colliders. It mainly focuses on the use of effective field theories as a tool for Large Hadron Collider (LHC) searches, discussing in detail the issue of their validity, and on simplified dark matter models, which are receiving a growing attention from the physics community. It highlights the theoretical consistency of simplified models, which is essential in order to correctly exploit their potential and for them to be a common reference when comparing results from different experiments. This thesis is of interest to researchers (both theorists and experimentalists) in the field of dark matter searches, and offers a comprehensive introduction to dark matter and to WIMP searches for students and non-experts.

Book The B L Phase Transition

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kai Schmitz
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-10-30
  • ISBN : 331900963X
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book The B L Phase Transition written by Kai Schmitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several of the very foundations of the cosmological standard model — the baryon asymmetry of the universe, dark matter, and the origin of the hot big bang itself — still call for an explanation from the perspective of fundamental physics. This work advocates one intriguing possibility for a consistent cosmology that fills in the theoretical gaps while being fully in accordance with the observational data. At very high energies, the universe might have been in a false vacuum state that preserved B-L, the difference between the baryon number B and the lepton number L as a local symmetry. In this state, the universe experienced a stage of hybrid inflation that only ended when the false vacuum became unstable and decayed, in the course of a waterfall transition, into a phase with spontaneously broken B-L symmetry. This B-L Phase Transition was accompanied by tachyonic preheating that transferred almost the entire energy of the false vacuum into a gas of B-L Higgs bosons, which in turn decayed into heavy Majorana neutrinos. Eventually, these neutrinos decayed into massless radiation, thereby producing the entropy of the hot big bang, generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe via the leptogenesis mechanism and setting the stage for the production of dark matter. Next to a variety of conceptual novelties and phenomenological predictions, the main achievement of the thesis is hence the fascinating notion that the leading role in the first act of our universe might have actually been played by neutrinos.

Book The Cosmic Cocktail

    Book Details:
  • Author : Katherine Freese
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2016-05-17
  • ISBN : 0691169187
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book The Cosmic Cocktail written by Katherine Freese and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inside story of the epic quest to solve the mystery of dark matter The ordinary atoms that make up the known universe—from our bodies and the air we breathe to the planets and stars—constitute only 5 percent of all matter and energy in the cosmos. The rest is known as dark matter and dark energy, because their precise identities are unknown. The Cosmic Cocktail is the inside story of the epic quest to solve one of the most compelling enigmas of modern science—what is the universe made of?—told by one of today's foremost pioneers in the study of dark matter. Blending cutting-edge science with her own behind-the-scenes insights as a leading researcher in the field, acclaimed theoretical physicist Katherine Freese recounts the hunt for dark matter, from the discoveries of visionary scientists like Fritz Zwicky—the Swiss astronomer who coined the term "dark matter" in 1933—to the deluge of data today from underground laboratories, satellites in space, and the Large Hadron Collider. Theorists contend that dark matter consists of fundamental particles known as WIMPs, or weakly interacting massive particles. Billions of them pass through our bodies every second without us even realizing it, yet their gravitational pull is capable of whirling stars and gas at breakneck speeds around the centers of galaxies, and bending light from distant bright objects. Freese describes the larger-than-life characters and clashing personalities behind the race to identify these elusive particles. Many cosmologists believe we are on the verge of solving the mystery. The Cosmic Cocktail provides the foundation needed to fully fathom this epochal moment in humankind’s quest to understand the universe.

Book Serious about Series

Download or read book Serious about Series written by Silk Makowski and published by Rlpg/Galleys. This book was released on 1998 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teen paperback series, routinely castigated or ignored by Young Adult librarians despite their popularity with young adults, should be considered for inclusion in collections alongside other genres. In Serious about Series, Makowksi provides distinct criteria by which these series can be judged for quality within their genre, and emphasizes them as an inexpensive way to fulfill patron needs and increase circulation by bringing young people, often considered "non-readers," into the library. Makowski's book is an insightful evaluation of over fifty popular series, and includes an introduction that analyzes the teen series paperback genre and its significance for both teen reading practices and library services. Hundreds of titles are annotated in the book, allowing librarians to develop "in-house" bibliographies of favorite teen series titles, making this a truly useful reference source for the young adult librarian.
