However, questions exist about both the effectiveness of marketing to children as well as the impact this advertising has on the children themselves. Current debates over smoking and alcohol consumption highlight this issue from all perspectives: marketers, parents, and policymakers. Advertising to Children presents cutting-edge research designed to stimulate and inform this debate. Well-known authors contribute their perspectives, with chapters organized in sections to address what children know and think about advertising, how advertising works with children, and what issues are at the forefront of societal and public-policy thinking. Editors M. Carole Macklin and Les Carlson have lead research in this field and lend their expertise. More than just a litany of hot topics, this book provides a wide-angle lens on the field, with insights from advertising, marketing, communication, and psychology.

Vivienne Anderson tells her personal story of how she left the trauma of her childhood and early adulthood behind her by building the courage to embrace God’s love and follow His path for her. Growing up in Jamaica, Anderson only knew pain and suffering. She was the victim of horrible sexual, physical, and psychological abuse. Her father and grandmother once buried her alive in a coffin to force her to submit to their practices of witchcraft and satanic worship. Through her nightmare of a childhood, Anderson saw glimmers of hope and a better life through occasional Pentecostal street meetings and through her imaginary friends that became the only ones she could trust with her feelings. She moved to America in her late teens but life continued to be full of heartache and danger. Anderson, once again, fell victim to physical and emotional abuse at the hands of the man in her life. Somehow, through all that suffering, Anderson was able to find hope. Just when she was at her lowest and darkest moment, she rediscovered a light… The Light. Once Anderson accepted the power of God and allowed Him to heal her soul and work through her, she began to find the way out of misery and into His glory. Download or read book Valuing People with a Learning Disability written by Steve Mee and published by M&K Update Ltd. This book was released on 2012 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most health and social care service providers claim to OCyvalueOCO those with a learning disability. Yet there can sometimes be a huge gulf between stated intentions and what happens in everyday practice. In a few cases that have recently hit the headlines, there have even been allegations of systematic abuse. This timely book asks three vital questions: OCo What do we mean by valuing?OCo How does the process of valuing work?OCo What needs to happen to ensure that we value people with a learning disability?Too often, practitioners tend to say OCyitOCOs all right in theory but not in the real worldOCO. In thisbook, Dr Steve Mee draws on his experience as a practitioner and lecturer on a learning disability nursing course, in which he has successfully used stories to bridge the gap between academic theory and everyday practice. Each chapter introduces the reader to a particular area of theory and illustrates it with uniquely powerful, memorable stories from practice as well as examples from recent news and historic accounts. Reading the book will give practitioners new insight, empathy and sensitivity that will make a lasting difference to their practice. It invites practitioners to truly reflect on whether they can claim to value the people they support.REVIEWEROCOS COMMENT: OC I feel this is a very important piece of work in an area that is often misunderstood. From reading the authors work, I have questioned my own approach to OCyValuing PeopleOCO and found myself lacking in some areas, even though I was of the opinion that I did truly value people with a learning difficulty.OCO"

Download or read book Seventh day Adventists and the Civil Rights Movement written by Samuel G. London and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-02-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventh-day Adventists and the Civil Rights Movement is the first in-depth study of the denomination's participation in civil rights politics. It considers the extent to which the denomination's theology influenced how its members responded. This book explores why a brave few Adventists became social and political activists, and why a majority of the faithful eschewed the movement. Samuel G. London, Jr., provides a clear, yet critical understanding of the history and theology of the Seventh-day Adventist Church while highlighting the contributions of its members to political reform. Community awareness, the example of early Adventist pioneers, liberationist interpretations of the Bible, as well as various intellectual and theological justifications motivated the civil rights activities of some Adventists. For those who participated in the civil rights movement, these factors superseded the conservative ideology and theology that came to dominate the church after the passing of its founders. Covering the end of the 1800s through the 1970s, the book discusses how Christian fundamentalism, the curse of Ham, the philosophy of Booker T. Washington, pragmatism, the aversion to ecumenism and the Social Gospel, belief in the separation of church and state, and American individualism converged to impact Adventist sociopolitical thought.

Download or read book From Greed to Grace written by David McCracken and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Greed to Grace is the story of one man's struggle to find his path through life from a meager beginning to what many Christians would call a successful conclusion. Author David McCracken's unhappy childhood took place in the 1940s on a small 200-acre farm in Lyon County, Kansas, without running water or electricity. Attending Sunday school at the age of nine for a couple months was the only framework upon which he could build a Christian life. Yet as a teen, he cried out for God's help. The author had no knowledge of the Holy Spirit at that time, but sensed that God heard his prayer and a peace came over the author. The heart of this memoir is devoted to the transformation the author went through that includes his years of struggle to overcome greed and allow God to guide his steps; how he became a successful self-taught day trader in the stock market; and how he won a 39-year-old claim with the VA. Along the way, McCracken served in the United States Air Force, taught speech and debate, was an award-winning debate coach, learned the stock market and became a religious man. This stunning book about overcoming adversity will open windows when others have tried to close doors. JDavid McCracken is now retired and living in Arizona.
