Book excerpt: 9 square miles. 10,000 criminals. 130 cops. A riveting memoir by Baker, California's most-decorated police officer Compton: the most violent and crime-ridden city in America. What had been a semi-rural suburb of Los Angeles in the 1950s became a battleground for the Black Panthers and Malcolm X Foundation, the home of the Crips and Bloods and the first Hispanic gangs, and the cradle of gangster rap. At the center of it, trying to maintain order was the Compton Police Department, never more than 130-strong, and facing an army of criminals that numbered over 10,000. At any given time, fully one-tenth of Compton's population was in prison, yet this tidal wave of crime was held back by the thinnest line of the law—the Compton Police. John R. Baker was raised in Compton, eventually becoming the city's most decorated officer involved in some of its most notorious, horrifying and scandalous criminal cases. Baker's account of Compton from 1950 to 2001 is one of the most powerful and compelling cop memoirs ever written—an intensely human account of sacrifice and public service, and the price the men and women of the Compton Police Department paid to preserve their city.

Book One Time The Story of a South Central Los Angeles Police Officer

Download or read book One Time The Story of a South Central Los Angeles Police Officer written by Brian S. Bentley and published by Cool Jack Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hardcore look into the mind of a patrol officer working in South Central Los Angeles. The author uses personal testimony to illustrate how "Da Hood" changed him from a "community base" police officer into an aggressive predator of gang members. The LAPD recruitment posters forgot to mention that he would be shot at, called an "Uncle Tom," and treated like an outsiders by his partners because he grew up and lived in the neighborhood he patrolled. The employment pamphlets failed to describe the helplessness he would feel while handling rape investigations or the sadness he would have to block out at homicide scenes. Nothing prepared him for what he would experience. His Bachelors degree did not prepare him for a career with the LAPD. Growing up with gang members did not prepare him for the streets as a cop. The only adequate preparation he had was his religious beliefs. He was prepared to die.

Drive by shooting? Nice quiet night. Now, with The Job he’s ready to talk, and does he have some stories to tell. Most civilians get their information about police work from television shows, which are pure fantasy. Here, Osborne takes us into his world, the gritty and not so glamorous life of real street cops. And along the way he finds humor and soul searching humanity in the most unlikely places. For anyone interested in knowing what a cop’s life is all about, this is a must read.

Download or read book David One written by Elaine Sturm and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the 60's, when cops didn't receive a lot of respect. Bradley Stokes always wanted to be a policeman but as a juvenile he messed up. He didn't kill anyone but he wasn't proud of his life. Pulling knives on kids his age, he was kind of a bully. And why not? His dad was a bully who used to punch him, call him crazy, and remove any resemblance to a father who cared about his sons. Through a faithful friend, Carlos, he redirected his life toward being a useful member of the community, helping others who came from similarly dysfunctional families as he did. Parents who didn't subscribe to Dr. Spock's thinking in raising your child without spankings, but not taking it to the other extreme. Wrapped up in their own self-pride, perverting parenthood and perverting Christianity. Yet, Bradley still felt that tug in his heart, that longing to fill that empty void that God created to draw all to himself, those that would listen for his voice. Desiring more to life than being a victim, Bradley answered the call to go forward one Sunday night, to dedicate his life to serving the Messiah as his personal Lord and Savior. He didn't want to be an evangelist but he did want to make a difference in the world, help others to leave their lives of crime and self-sabotage and do something important, maybe raise up others to a potential that would lead them to do something great and fulfilling. That was how he felt now anyway. With little direction he found a local church that preached the Word of God in a way he understood for the first time. Finding Carlos, a friend and mentor, he began to understand the meaning of having a 'relationship' with God. His parents didn't care what he did, so he set out to make the necessary changes in his life that would give him the skills to get a good job, serve the community and make enough money to encourage and help others. He would enter college after high school to get a degree that would make himself more marketable, but he felt the pull toward law enforcement so that was where he was headed. Since he had ties to his community he wanted to work in his home town and be close to his church to help keep him accountable in his new walk with God. College was not difficult for him. He enjoyed his law enforcement classes immensely, and found them more fun than challenging. He got to know the teachers, who were mostly retired or active in some kind of law enforcement agency. That also helped his choices when he applied at the local police department. He saw himself as a detective, but that wouldn't happen overnight. For now he would work at doing the best job he could. The police academy again was kind of like a boot camp but more fun. Now, working in his local police department he could put into practice everything he learned in the last four years of schooling. The environment at the department was not exactly what he expected. There was a negative environment, one that was not unfamiliar to him. From what he heard it was pretty normal in most departments. Most of the men stepped on whomever they could to get ahead. But there were a few he felt a kindred spirit to and wondered if they were also 'saved'. He could talk to them on occasion and get some direction. His on the job training was standard with the usual ragging and hazing, but he took it all with a grain of salt, knowing this was something everyone had to go through until they earned their title of Police Officer. Still, he would be called a 'rookie' for some time, not the worst of it, and so he could brush that off as well. Working shifts was difficult at times, fighting sleepiness and boredom on the graveyard shift, but there were tricks to help through that time too. All in all Bradley felt like he was fulfilling his calling in life. However, his circumstances would change after he met the love of his life and he would begin to question his own discernment. Walk with Brad through "David One" and experience some time with this young rookie.

Book Rise of the Warrior Cop

Download or read book Rise of the Warrior Cop written by Radley Balko and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking history of how American police forces have been militarized is now revised and updated. Newly added material brings the story through 2020, including analysis of the Ferguson protests, the Obama and Trump administrations, and the George Floyd protests. The last days of colonialism taught America’s revolutionaries that soldiers in the streets bring conflict and tyranny. As a result, our country has generally worked to keep the military out of law enforcement. But over the last two centuries, America’s cops have increasingly come to resemble ground troops. The consequences have been dire: the home is no longer a place of sanctuary, the Fourth Amendment has been gutted, and police today have been conditioned to see the citizens they serve as enemies. In Rise of the Warrior Cop, Balko shows how politicians’ ill-considered policies and relentless declarations of war against vague enemies like crime, drugs, and terror have blurred the distinction between cop and soldier. His fascinating, frightening narrative that spans from America’s earliest days through today shows how a creeping battlefield mentality has isolated and alienated American police officers and put them on a collision course with the values of a free society.
