Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Toraja highlanders of Indonesia use the expression "one or two words" to refer euphemistically to their highly elaborate form of political speechmaking. Taking off from this understatement, which signals the meaningfulness of transient acts of speech, One or Two Words offers an analysis of the shifting power relations between centers and peripheries in one of the world's most linguistically diverse countries. Drawing on long-term fieldwork, Aurora Donzelli explores how people forge forms of collective belonging to a distinctive locality through the exchange of spoken words, WhatsApp messages, ritual gifts of pigs and buffaloes, and the performance of elaborate political speeches and ritual chants. Donzelli describes the complex forms of cosmopolitan indigeneity that have emerged in the Toraja highlands during several decades of encounters with a variety of local and international interlocutors, and by engaging wider debates on the dynamics of cultural and linguistic change in relationship to globalizing influences, the book sheds light on a neglected dimension of post-Suharto Indonesia: the recalibration of power relations between national and local languages. One or Two Words will be of interest to scholars of language, politics, power relationships, identity, social change, and local responses to globalizing influences.

Book Thirty Two Words for Field

Download or read book Thirty Two Words for Field written by Manchán Magan and published by Bonnier Books UK. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rediscover the lost words of an ancient land in this new and updated edition of an international bestseller. Most people associate Britain and Ireland with the English language, a vast, sprawling linguistic tree with roots in Latin, French, and German, and branches spanning the world, from Australia and India to North America. But the inhabitants of these islands originally spoke another tongue. Look closely enough and English contains traces of the Celtic soil from which it sprung, found in words like bog, loch, cairn and crag. Today, this heritage can be found nowhere more powerfully than in modern-day Gaelic. In Thirty-Two Words for Field Manchán Magan explores the enchantment, sublime beauty and sheer oddness of a 3000-year-old lexicon. Imbuing the natural world with meaning and magic, it evokes a time-honoured way of life, from its 32 separate words for a field, to terms like loisideach (a place with a lot of kneading troughs), bróis (whiskey for a horseman at a wedding), and iarmhaireacht (the loneliness you feel when you are the only person awake at cockcrow). Told through stories collected from Magan's own life and travels, Thirty-Two Words for Field is an enthralling celebration of Irish words, and a testament to the indelible relationship between landscape, culture and language.

But it was those exact words that started her on the most challenging trial of her life. Jamie was a healthy, 43-year-old wife and mother of two daughters with no genetic markers or family history of breast cancer. Yet in an instant, she found herself facing this terrifying diagnosis and all of the unknowns that come along with it. Jamie was raised with a strong faith in God, but up until this point, never realized how much she would need to lean on her beliefs to get her through this trial. Through her inspiring story, she beautifully shares how God faithfully walked beside her every step of the way beginning with the day of her diagnosis. She paints a moving picture of how He never left her side using real examples and heartwarming stories. Part One is her breast cancer journey. Jamie begins by detailing the moment she discovered a lump in her breast, continues through the agonizing process of developing her treatment plan, the challenges of chemotherapy, and finally addresses her double mastectomy surgery. Jamie articulates her thoughts and emotions through all of these stages, with both authenticity and humor. She vulnerably shares how her diagnosis affected both her husband and their daughters, and how they worked through this challenge together as a family. Part Two is a collection of Jamie's "gems." These are lessons she learned along the way, tips, and tricks for other women experiencing a similar diagnosis and anecdotes for anyone facing a challenging time in their lives. She shares her insight on topics such as what it's like to lose your hair, or how to put your life back together during the recovery stage. Even difficult and often unspoken concerns such as physical intimacy after cancer are addressed. I Have Two Words for You is a must-read for anyone facing a breast cancer diagnosis. This book will make you feel like you are curled up on the couch with a close friend, and no question is off the table. Jamie's words will make you laugh and make you cry, but most importantly, they will give you hope. Her inspirational story and how her faith in God remained a constant source of strength in the middle of a very dark season, is a breath of fresh air. No matter what type of storm you are facing, Jamie's story will inspire you to believe in the impossible and live with no regrets. I Have Two Words for You is a touching guide written to help women facing breast cancer see the light at the end of the tunnel and to show them that they are not alone. Jamie believes that Her passion is to use her story to help women find the strength to go on, and to not only survive but to thrive!

Book Dictionary of the British English Spelling System

Download or read book Dictionary of the British English Spelling System written by Greg Brooks and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will tell all you need to know about British English spelling. It's a reference work intended for anyone interested in the English language, especially those who teach it, whatever the age or mother tongue of their students. It will be particularly useful to those wishing to produce well-designed materials for teaching initial literacy via phonics, for teaching English as a foreign or second language, and for teacher training. English spelling is notoriously complicated and difficult to learn; it is correctly described as much less regular and predictable than any other alphabetic orthography. However, there is more regularity in the English spelling system than is generally appreciated. This book provides, for the first time, a thorough account of the whole complex system. It does so by describing how phonemes relate to graphemes and vice versa. It enables searches for particular words, so that one can easily find, not the meanings or pronunciations of words, but the other words with which those with unusual phoneme-grapheme/grapheme-phoneme correspondences keep company. Other unique features of this book include teacher-friendly lists of correspondences and various regularities not described by previous authorities, for example the strong tendency for the letter-name vowel phonemes (the names of the letters ) to be spelt with those single letters in non-final syllables.
