Book excerpt: Ema and Bruno, two young people who have their careers as their only refuge in the absence of a successful personal life, meet each other in Romania at the conference of the multinational company they both work for. She works in Bucharest and he in Zurich. Although they meet for business, they start developing feelings for each other, and when they say good-bye in the airport, they both hope they will meet again. This happens sooner than imagined because the air traffic is blocked by a volcanic eruption in Iceland, and Bruno finds himself unable to fly home. The evening they unexpectedly come to spend together is the beginning of a beautiful story. But its thread is broken off by an unfortunate car accident that turns their lives upside down. Exciting, likable characters come into scene with their own secrets, which will eventually come to the surface. Their attempts to properly set the level of their expectations on the frail border between the beauty of their dreams and the fear of losing them and getting hurt take the reader through a story full of unexpected turns, with joy and pain, hope and disappointment, love and restraint.

Book More Than We Expected

Download or read book More Than We Expected written by James G. Robinson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “No matter how much I enjoyed parenthood, I found myself having to accept its fundamental truth: that nothing ever turns out quite as you’d expect.” It was a journey that most parents would hope to avoid: a son born with a congenital heart defect, a fateful decision to take a family trip abroad, and an emergency hospitalization that left them stranded on the other side of the world with no obvious way home. Despite these difficult circumstances, More Than We Expected is not a tragedy. Instead, this memoir offers valuable lessons about the privilege of parenthood and the practice of medicine: the mysterious ways in which the body forms and grows, giving life; how we find the faith to live with our decisions, even if the consequences are beyond our control; and a family’s extraordinary capacity—when something goes wrong—to compensate and heal. More Than We Expected is a story of finding strength in the most unexpected places. Our children have a special ability to reveal the goodness in the world—their eyes a window to a life full of wonder. Like them, this book is a vivid reminder of what it means to be human—a miraculous, inexplicable gift, however fleeting.

Book excerpt: When Britain declares war on Germany in 1939, Carolyn Maddison is still a schoolgirl. Her elder brother Alastair wastes no time in joining the RAF as a flying officer, and Carolyn decides that when she is eighteen she will follow him into the service by joining the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. While reporting to the Air Ministry in London she meets a good-looking, charismatic pilot, Charlie Wade, currently employed in propaganda work. He believes that with her calm demeanor and resilience, Carolyn should work as an Intelligence officer, and suggests she serve on an active bombing station. At her side throughout the courses and postings that follow is Lucy Gaston, naturally quick-witted and sparky, a perfect foil for her friend. The young WAAFs both obtain prestigious postings in 5 Group Bomber Command, where they perform the vital tasks of briefing and debriefing aircrew returning from operations over Germany. Lucy, an incorrigible optimist, falls head over heels for a member of a Lancaster bomber crew while Carolyn resists her feelings for its dashing pilot. She decides it's not worth the risk of loving a man in wartime. . . only to wonder if she has done the right thing when a new WAAF on the station sets her cap at him. For Lucy and Carolyn, life on a WWII bombing station brings drama, heartbreak and suspense in this touching love story.

Book excerpt: From the USA Today bestselling author of Everything at Last comes the third in the "delightful"* Magnolia Beach series, a tale of two hearts adrift finding love in the most unlikely of situations... The small, waterfront town of Magnolia Beach, Alabama, gets its fair share of tourists breezing in and out, but one handsome visitor might just be tempted to stay... Running the Bay Breeze marina means Shelby Tanner is used to fielding strange requests from vacationers, but she is still less than amused when she gets a call in the middle of the night to rescue a boat stranded nearby. The clueless sailor is infuriatingly inexperienced--yet also frustratingly attractive. Architect Declan Hyde only planned on stopping in Alabama briefly on his move from Chicago to Miami, but Magnolia Beach is proving to be more captivating than he imagined. For one thing, there's the sweet, Southern charm. For another, there's the stunning tomboy who rescued him from the bay and keeps invading his thoughts. As the time draws near for Declan to weigh anchor, he begins to realize that Shelby may have saved more than his boat that night--and leaving Magnolia Beach might set his lonely heart permanently adrift...

Book Korea and the Imperialists

Download or read book Korea and the Imperialists written by Young Park and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KOREA AND THE IMPERIALISTS Until the Korean War in 1950, except for evangelist Christian missionaries, Americans were not interested in Korea or considered it important in the scheme of things. Many did not know Korea had existed as an independent kingdom for centuries and others thought Korea might be a part of China or Japan. Nationalism, geopolitics, and imperialism were the major determinants of international events in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Greed and racism were the prime motivators of imperialism and non-White societies of the world were the victims. Korea was one of many countries that was invaded and made a "sphere of influence." With the support of America and Britain, Japan destroyed Korea's traditional national identity and made Korea a colony in the Japanese Empire. It was the perfect example of how imperialism profoundly affected the social, economic, and political life of countries subjugated by imperialist powers. After World War II, Korea was not granted independence because the Americans did not believe Koreans were capable of self-government. Korea was divided into two military occupation zones, resulting in the creation of a Russian and an American satellite state. In an effort to unite Korea, North Korea invaded South Korea. The U.S., China, and the two Korean states fought a meaningless war and Korea remains divided. Who are the Koreans? Why are there two Koreas? What is Korea's national identity? What role does imperialism and racism play in the destruction of national identities? Hopefully, this brief history of Korea and the Imperialists will provide some answers.
