Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Serrano, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for the Los Angeles Times, pens a story of two veterans. In the late 1950s, as America prepared for the Civil War centennial, two very old men lay dying. Albert Woolson, 109 years old, slipped in and out of a coma at a Duluth, Minnesota, hospital, his memories as a Yankee drummer boy slowly dimming. Walter Williams, at 117 blind and deaf and bedridden in his daughter's home in Houston, Texas, no longer could tell of his time as a Confederate forage master. The last of the Blue and the Gray were drifting away; an era was ending. Unknown to the public, centennial officials, and the White House too, one of these men was indeed a veteran of that horrible conflict and one according to the best evidence nothing but a fraud. One was a soldier. The other had been living a great, big lie.

Book excerpt: Residents of antebellum northwest Louisiana held strong pro-Union sentiments, and the Pierson family of Bienville Parish, Louisiana, were no exception, opposing secession in 1861. Yet once war began, the region contributed its full share of support to the southern army, and four of William H. Pierson's eight sons enlisted. Ranging from the early battles of the Trans-Mississippi to the epic battles of the Army of Northern Virginia, and from the brutal trenches of Vicksburg to provost guard duty in north Louisiana, this extensive collection of Civil War letters, written by three of the Pierson brothers, offers riveting glimpses of almost every variety of experience faced by Confederate soldiers. Prolific letter writers, the Piersons were educated, observant, and well placed to comment not only on the battles and campaigns of their regiments but also on their commanding officers, the effect of political activity on soldier morale, being taken captive, and, most of all, their entire family's understanding of and commitment to the Confederate cause.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Jack Livingston Describes the Book"Clearing out the high school with a smoke bomb prank in our senior year, raising a family of pigs in a village yard, saving a drowning man in Singapore, and overcoming the trauma of a childhood abduction are part of my friend, Chris Kelley's past. I knew little about them. To me, Chris was the guy who was always up for doing two fun things in one day (sometimes three). When Chris was diagnosed with Pick's disease (a rare type of dementia) in his mid-fifties, it signaled the end to what we had taken for granted. It changed our friendship. No longer would I follow him on epic adventures he planned. These days, I take him for hikes, hold both sides of our conversations, and help him across a two-foot stream. But because I didn't want to forget the times we'd had together, I started to write, and as a result found out there was more to my friend. In A Lot Like Fun -- Only Different I share incredible stories of our improbable friendship where Chris met life head on while I asked, "Are you sure we want to do this?" It contains dozens of stories and photos from our past that contrast 'current day' Chris, diminished by Pick's, with the Chris I knew so well. No longer are we barreling down the 219 to ski or mountain bike the Bent Rim Trail, and celebrating with a 'couple tree' beers. We aren't breaking trails with our snowshoes in the Adirondack High Peaks or cruising through Appalachia on the way to a 24-hour mountain bike race. We still get together every week. And I look forward to those times. It's fun -- only different. Chris greets me with a smile and a hearty laugh. He doesn't speak, but I know if he could, he'd tell me, 'Thanks for coming out, Jack. Today was great.' And then it breaks my heart when he stands next to my car, wanting to ride home with me and I have to tell him, 'Chris, you're riding with your brother. I'll see you next week, okay buddy.' And I hear his words of the past. 'Good deal.'"

Book Alaska Hunting

Download or read book Alaska Hunting written by Jake Jacobson and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2013-08-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaska Hunting: Earthworms to Elephants, a collection of 39 stories, is intended to be seasoning for a Hunters' pie, rural Alaska style. Most hunters extol the charismatic mega fauna, but pursuit of lesser game often takes center stage. Occasionally hunting discoveries lead to other endeavors, from jade mining to gold prospecting and fossil recovery. Possibilities are limitless. As we engage in hunting and fishing pursuits memories are laced with the big ones--the exceptional, genetically endowed giants--but some of the brightest memories are of average representatives of their species. What made them so memorable was the combination of circumstances under which they were taken--or lost. Companions, whether human or animal, often make the hunt memorable and its recollections of trophy quality.

Book Implication Readers Resources and Thomas Gray s Pindaric Odes

Download or read book Implication Readers Resources and Thomas Gray s Pindaric Odes written by Frederick M. Keener and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implication, Readers' Resources, and Thomas Gray's Pindaric Odes presents an account of "the Poets' Secret," the quite belated, historically recent, discovery by scholars and critics of something many poets have recognized and employed for ages: the sense expressed by allusively parallel parts within a text--thus expressed intratextually rather than only intertextually. Inferential perception of the implicit sense produced logically and linguistically--by enthymemes, implicatures, and other intratextual features, as well as intertextual ones--can be indispensable for readers' comprehension of literary as well as other texts, especially their difficult passages. Implication, Readers' Resources, and Thomas Gray's Pindaric Odes addresses these elusive matters as they have historically been posed by Thomas Gray's Pindaric odes of 1757, and mainly the first of them, "The Progress of Poesy," a poem that readers have more or less knowledgeably struggled to understand from the outset. The process of disclosing that ode's sense can be aided by new further reference to Paradise Lost, in the context of Gray's largely unpublished Commonplace Book, with its extensive, little-studied, and very pertinent use of Plato and Locke.

Book The World Is Our Home

Download or read book The World Is Our Home written by Jeffrey J. Folks and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1970s southern fiction has been increasingly attentive to social issues, including the continuing struggles for racial justice and gender equality, the loss of a sense of social community, and the decline of a coherent regional identity. The essays in The World Is Our Home focus on writers who have explicitly addressed social and cultural issues in their fiction and drama, including Dorothy Allison, Horton Foote, Ernest J. Gaines, Jill McCorkle, Walker Percy, Lee Smith, William Styron, Alice Walker, and many others. The contributors provide valuable insights into the transformation of southern culture over the past thirty years and probe the social and cultural divisions that persist. The collection makes an important case for the centrality of social critique in contemporary southern fiction.
