  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Make Em Laugh written by Steve Allen and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of Steve Allen's How To Be Funny led first to the republication of that book, and now occasioned a companion volume, Make 'Em Laugh. This new how-to book about the art of comedy includes an even richer assortment of examples of the author's unique humor. In Make 'Em Laugh, Allen laces his formal instruction with hilarious ad-libs, written jokes, TV comedy sketches, satires, song parodies, humorous essays, amusing autobiographical reminiscences, one-act plays, witty speeches, and stand-up monologues from his comedy concerts. Noel Coward called Steve Allen the most talented man in America, and he is probably the most borrowed-from comedian of all time. The perceptive reader will recognize many of the comic ideas that Allen originated during the "Golden Age" of television comedy - ideas that are still influential in the 1990's. If there were a college course in creating and performing comedy, Make 'Em Laugh would be the ideal textbook.

Download or read book Make Em Laugh written by Michael Kantor and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the most popular routines and the most ingenious physical shtick to the snappiest wisecracks and the most biting satire of the last century, Make 'Em Laugh illuminates who we are as a nation by exploring what makes us laugh, and why. Authors Laurence Maslon and Michael Kantor draw on countless sources to chronicle the past century of American comedy and the geniuses who created and performed it-melding biography, American history, and a lotta laughs into an exuberant, important book. Each of the six chapters focuses a different style or archetype of comedy, from the slapstick pratfalls of Buster Keaton and Lucille Ball through the wiseguy put-downs of Groucho Marx and Larry David, to the incendiary bombshells of Mae West and Richard Pryor . And at every turn the significance of these comedians-smashing social boundaries, challenging the definition of good taste, speaking the truth to the powerful-is vividly tangible. Make 'Em Laugh is more than a compendium of American comic genius; it is a window onto the way comedy both reflects the world and changes it-one laugh at a time. Starting from the groundbreaking PBS series, the authors have gone deeper into the works and lives of America's great comic artists, with biographical portraits, archival materials, cultural overviews, and rare photos. Brilliantly illustrated, with insights (and jokes) from comedians, writers and producers, along with film, radio, television, and theater historians, Make 'Em Laugh is an indispensible, definitive book about comedy in America.

Book excerpt: You just watched the 6 o'clock news. Now ask yourself, "When is God going to throw in the towel?" God came close once before: The Flood of Genesis. And John, in the last book of the Bible, wrote the newscast for the Armageddon. So where do we stand right now? Steve Simon doesn't presume to know. After all, he's an agnostic. But he does choose to believe in God. However, he's losing his faith in man. On the other hand, he hasn't lost his sense of humor and he has a cat to guide him through the hard times. Makes sense. The Rainbreaker is a fable that attacks some tough moral issues with a lot of good-natured fun. Lest you think that the author is poking fun at God, rest assured. God always comes out on top. It's "stupid human tricks" (such as the failure of nearly all human institutions) that convince Steve Simon that God will not destroy the world but simply replace humans with animals. Or something like that. Adults who've enjoyed "Marley & Me" and the satire of Amrose Bierce, P.J. O'Rourke, and Chris Buckley will laugh out loud at this genre-bender with a message.

Book excerpt: A confrontation within a prison between the inmate Franklin and a National Guardsman, there to staff the prison during the 1977 Wisconsin state employee strike, starts a series of events neither man foresees nor can ignore as chance soon brings them together again. Our hero has travelled with his wife and sister to help take Rick and Paula's large trailer into Nicolet National Forest in upper Wisconsin, to hunt deer in the days before Thanksgiving. Other friends have joined them. All look forward to the fun, to the hunt, and to help a friend establish a new home. The fun ends abruptly when Franklin and his convicts, having escaped from prison the evening before, enter this forest to avoid the law and find their camp. They forcibly take command yet not every camper has been caught. An on-going struggle littered with death ensues and, as it does, Franklin and our hero discover their paths have crossed again. Franklin takes delight in this, knows nearly every advantage is his to take, as he begins to hunt our hero down. Our hero is terrified, confused, emotionally shocked, from witnessing the convicts kill as he begins to fight back. He takes a questionable stance, makes tormenting choices and daring actions, with unknown results that could either save or kill his wife, sister, and friends. A wicked blizzard compounds his problems for survival. Then he learns Franklin is foremost among those he fights-from Franklin himself. As Franklin pursues him in the snows his life already ebbs away ... can he save the others-are they still alive-can he save himself-what can you do when there's no one to help and no where to run and you know you're slowly dying?

Book Apparently There Were Complaints

Download or read book Apparently There Were Complaints written by Sharon Gless and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emmy Award–winning actress Sharon Gless tells all in this laugh-out-loud, juicy, “unforgettably memorable” (Lily Tomlin) memoir about her five decades in Hollywood, where she took on some of the most groundbreaking roles of her time. Anyone who has seen Sharon Gless act in Cagney & Lacey, Queer as Folk, Burn Notice, and countless other shows and movies, knows that she’s someone who gives every role her all. She holds nothing back in Apparently There Were Complaints, a hilarious, deeply personal memoir that spills all about Gless’s five decades in Hollywood. A fifth-generation Californian, Sharon Gless knew from a young age that she wanted to be an actress. After some rocky teenage years that included Sharon’s parents’ divorce and some minor (and not-so-minor) rebellion, Gless landed a coveted spot as an exclusive contract player for Universal Studios. In 1982, she stepped into the role of New York Police Detective Christine Cagney for the series Cagney & Lacey, which eventually reached an audience of 30 million weekly viewers and garnered Gless with two Emmy Awards. The show made history as the first hour-long drama to feature two women in the leading roles. Gless continued to make history long after Cagney & Lacey was over. In 2000, she took on the role of outrageous Debbie Novotny in Queer as Folk. Her portrayal of a devoted mother to a gay son and confidant to his gay friends touched countless hearts and changed the definition of family for millions of viewers. Apparently There Were Complaints delves into Gless’s remarkable career and explores Gless’s complicated family, her struggles with alcoholism, and her fear of romantic commitment as well as her encounters with some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Brutally honest and incredibly relatable, Gless puts it all out on the page in the same way she has lived—never with moderation.

Book Emotive Networks and Brands

Download or read book Emotive Networks and Brands written by Sabrina Eilers and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2003-08-25 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Brands have existed for several hundreds of years. Farmers used to brand their cattle by burning a mark into their fur. Others engraved initials into their valuables. The mark showed who the possession belonged to or where the cattle or goods originated from. This tradition still lives on in the logos, names, symbols and designs companies give to their products and services to distinguish their offers from the others the competitors. From a simple marking of possessions and origin, branding has come a long way. Nowadays, companies invest a great amount of resources into building, maintaining and nurturing their brands. In acquisitions, companies pay a huge amount of money for a brand. Take Nestlé s acquisition of Rowntree, which owns brands like Kit Kat and Smarties, as an example. Nestlé paid five times the net asset value of Rowntree in order to acquire stable brands. Why do companies pay such large sums of money for an invisible asset like a brand? The answer is simple: consumers do the same. Studies showed that consumers pay a far higher price for a product or service of a well-known brand they trust than for a comparable offer from a less well-know brand. Brands make up for a big chunk of a firm s revenues today and make sales predictable. As Internet and mobile communication grows in terms of users and becomes more important in their users lives, brands are unsure of how to handle this new medium in the digital age, since market dynamics have changed. Competition is more fierce, rumours spread worldwide in no time and brands lose emotional touch with their target segment. This change has been facilitated by online and mobile communication of peers. People have always formed peer networks, but today these networks are much more powerful and quicker. Networks of consumers take over and steal power from established brands. Shell witnessed a worldwide protest against its plans of sinking the oil platform Brent Spar into the North Sea. Consumers avoided Shell stations and supported Greenpeace. Rumours of sweat shops in Asia run by Nike and Reebok have led to loss of face as a result of worldwide protests. On top of these threats, brands have to face the fact that they have no chance fighting these networks of consumers. At the same time, peer networks also open up many opportunities like a customized and personalized approach to every individual. At the beginning of last century, the owner of a general store knew [...]
