Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in America One Hundred Years Ago Committee of One Hundred to celebrate one hundred years of peace between Great Britain and the United States at the city of Washington, and is a contribution to that celebration. It is a sketch, drawn in outline, of life and manners in the United States in the year when peace was made with Great Britain, and this nation started upon a career of separate, independent national development. I have suggested some of the causes of the development, and have portrayed the character of the people in a gen eral way. I hope I have been able to communicate some of the atmosphere of the time to my narrative. It was an invigorating atmosphere, full of life and in spiration to those who breathed it. We must believe that it was, for if it had not been we should not now rank among the great nations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book In the Fourth Year

Download or read book In the Fourth Year written by H. G. Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Fourth Year: Anticipations of a World Peace In the latter half of 1914 a few of us were writing that this war was a "War of Ideas." A phrase, "The War to end War," got into circulation, amidst much sceptical comment. It was a phrase powerful enough to sway many men, essentially pacifists, towards taking an active part in the war against German imperialism, but it was a phrase whose chief content was its aspiration. People were already writing in those early days of disarmament and of the abolition of the armament industry throughout the world; they realized fully the element of industrial belligerency behind the shining armour of imperialism, and they denounced the "Krupp-Kaiser" alliance. But against such writing and such thought we had to count, in those days, great and powerful realities. Even to those who expressed these ideas there lay visibly upon them the shadow of impracticability; they were very "advanced" ideas in 1914, very Utopian. Against them was an unbroken mass of mental habit and public tradition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Many years later Maxine Hong Kingston wrote a Fourth Book of Peace, but it too was burned--in the catastrophic Berkeley-Oakland Hills fire of 1991, a fire that coincided with the death of her father. Now in this visionary and redemptive work, Kingston completes her interrupted labor, weaving fiction and memoir into a luminous meditation on war and peace, devastation and renewal.

Book The Bulwarks of Peace Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bulwarks of Peace Classic Reprint written by Heber Leonidas Hart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bulwarks of Peace Mankind are at length fully alive to the terrible evils of war. But, in order that everything possible may be done to avoid these evils in the future, it is necessary that those who influence the opinion of the various nations should have a clear apprehension of all the means which are available for the preservation of peace, and, at the same time, that they should appreciate the danger of placing excessive reliance upon the efficacy of any particular measure. At present there appears to be a disposition on the part of many generous minds to believe that the formation of a League of Nations for the purpose of preventing wars will in itself result in the practical maintenance of general peace. It certainly, indeed, seems probable that a confederacy of this kind, which has been advocated by several great thinkers in the course of the last few centuries, will be actually established at no distant date. Book Universal Peace Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Universal Peace The sole reason that prompts me to publish this work on peace is my deep interest in the subject, which I consider the greatest and most laudable that has ever engaged the sober thought of a people. For years I have watched this universal movement, and have borne in mind the conclusions set forth in this book; but I had not considered the time auspicious or opportune for making these views public, for fear they might have been considered impracticable, idealistic and chimerical. Even to-day, while the influences that bind the world together in common interests are seen at work, I am not satisfied that my most worthy and learned reader will not consider me a dreamer, and I can' ask only for his indulgence while I portray the future in the colors of the past, sincerely hoping that time will bear me out in my predictions, which are based entirely upon historical facts. Al though this colleetion follows in its steps, it would not be restrieted in its purpose. It has been written for the service of those attending on any who cannot, for the time being, read to themselves. Like David's harp to the spirit of Saul, to these it would bring peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peace and America Now almost six months have passed with battles the like of which mankind has not seen or dreamt. Never were six months longer, as man's mind measures time by its events, and never before in the history of the world have a thousand millions of men waited so eagerly for news from hour to hour. And life around us has changed in those six months, and we have all changed, and we see the world with new eyes. Even the war itself means to us today something different. How it came about - the question today seems stale and forgotten! How it can come to an end - that is the problem which overshadows all our thoughts and feelings! Six months have made us all sympathizers and sufferers and mourners: we pray for delivery, we long for peace. Book One Hundred Years of Solitude

Download or read book One Hundred Years of Solitude written by Gabriel García Márquez and published by Blackstone Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the twentieth century’s enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize–winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America. Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility, the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth—these universal themes dominate the novel. Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. Translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an account of the history of the human race.

Download or read book Pax Peace Classic Reprint written by Lorenzo Marroquin and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pax (Peace) The name of the much-wracked republic of Colombia is indissolubly linked with that of the most popular novel that has thus far come out of Spanish America, - the tender, idyllic romance entitled Maria, by Jorge Isaacs (1837-1875). The nationalistic strain in Isaacs was carried forward by later novelists, few of whom have been found worthy of serious consideration by lovers of belles lettres. Among these the outstanding exception is Lorenzo Marroquin (died 1918), whose Pax created a furore at the time of its appearance. For this there were, of course, non-literary reasons. The caustic satire of the book, its spirited caricatures of loathsome national types, imparted to ft all the political zest of an old roman a clef, and more than one public figure believed that he had been held up to scorn in the pages of this colorful, moving novel of love, intrigue, religion, politics and revolution. Yet this is but a superficial aspect of the book, which as a whole should possess for us Americans of the North the attraction exercised by a work that is written in hot sincerity, portraying the evils that consume an author's beloved country! This, perhaps, is the prime impulse in Pax; it was born of a high religious faith in the service of an ardent patriotism. The author is thoroughly imbued with his milieu; he knows the people and their customs, the landscape and its secrets, the vanishing nobility and their foundering ideals. If he has not caught the ideals of the rising lower classes, that is because his novel is, in a sense, the defiant swan-song of a departing era.
