Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for his paean to self-sufficiency, "Living the Good Life," which became a bestseller that "Newsweek" called "an underground bible for the city-weary," Scott Nearing was also a high-profile public advocate for education reform at the start of the Progressive era. Lamenting that public schools had failed to keep up with societal changes, Nearing traveled the country during the early decades of the twentieth century, documenting schools that had abandoned a traditional authoritarian stance in favor of child-centered practice. Now, in the first decade of the twenty-first century, the vignettes, interviews, and speculations on school restructuring, curriculum development, and educational reform that he offered in "The New Education" a century ago are relevant once again.

Book Getting Better

Download or read book Getting Better written by Charles Kenny and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the income gap between developed and developing nations grows, so grows the cacophony of voices claiming that the quest to find a simple recipe for economic growth has failed. Getting Better, in sharp contrast, reports the good news about global progress. Economist Charles Kenny argues against development naysayers by pointing to the evidence of widespread improvements in health, education, peace, liberty -- and even happiness. Kenny shows how the spread of cheap technologies, such as vaccines and bed nets, and ideas, such as political rights, has transformed the world. He also shows that by understanding this transformation, we can make the world an even better place to live. That's not to say that life is grand for everyone, or that we don't have a long way to go. But improvements have spread far, and, according to Kenny, they can spread even further.

Book Fifty Years of American Education

Download or read book Fifty Years of American Education written by Ernest Carroll Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years of American Education: A Sketch of the Progress of Education in the United States In The year 1867 Edwin Ginn took desk room in a modest Boston office and so began the business which has for many years been conducted under the firm name of Ginn and Company. When an individual or an organization reaches the half-century mark it seems fitting to signalize in some appropriate way that achievement. Casting about for a suitable anniversary memento of our own fifty years. we were struck by the remarkable growth and development of the school system of the United States during this period. It finally seemed to us that we could do no better than invite Dr. Ernest C. Moore to sum up the educational progress of the United States since 1867. We are sure that Dr. Moore's admirable sketch of the history of education in this country for the period beginning in 1867 and ending in 1917 will be a welcome and useful contribution to our educational literature and we bring it before the public with gratitude that our own business development has been contemporaneous with this marvelous change in our American schools. Book excerpt: Building on the ideas developed in Word Nerds: Teaching All Students to Learn and Love Vocabulary , Brenda J. Overturf has updated and energized the recommended practices for middle grades students. Vocabularians is for any educator who wants to help young adolescents increase knowledge and competency with word study while bringing interest, motivation, and even joy to their learning. Brenda takes teachers and administrators inside three middle-level schools where educators are integrating vocabulary instruction across the curriculum. In rural, urban, and suburban settings, she highlights effective ways to develop students' vocabulary skills using art, music, games, technology, reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking. Vocabularians shows teachers of all content areas how to build word networks, flood the classroom environment with academic vocabulary, and incorporate the three word-solving strategies that researchers have found to be the most important-;teaching students how to use context; deciphering words by breaking down prefixes, suffixes, and root words; and using reference materials in authentic ways. By blending current research with real classroom experience and application, Brenda builds on her work with Margot Holmes Smith and Leslie Montgomery and offers an easy-to-implement, customized-to-middle-school resource that will improve instruction and assessment. As one featured seventh grader shared: Vocabulary helps you because the more you know words, the more fluent you can be in reading, the better you can read and write, and the better your writing sounds. There's always going to be a time when you have to sound professional, whether you're applying for a job or anything else. You're just going to have to know how to use a good vocabulary.-

Book The Educational Progress of the Year 1903 1905 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Educational Progress of the Year 1903 1905 Classic Reprint written by Howard J. Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Educational Progress of the Year (1903-1905) Much frank criticism. In most cases well deserved, is mingled with the freely expressed admiration. Our teaching of foreign languages seemed to the Commission particularly slipshod and to partake of antiquated methods. Some disappointment was expressed that manual and industrial training does not seem to have played any great pait in our commercial or industrial 'development. The answer to this criticism is under two heads: first, very few of our industrial schools and our manual training departments are over ten years old. Which is altogether too short a period to exert any marked in uence on industrial methods; second, the theory of public education in the United States is based upon the belief that our prominence in indus trial and commercial work is due not so much to any form of special training in the arts and crafts as to the liberal training which is given to every child in our public schools. It is a safe rule of conduct that if a child is fitted during his eight elementary years for anything. He will be bound as a wage earner to be fit for something. Book Tinkering toward Utopia

  • Author : David B. TYACK
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-06-30
  • ISBN : 0674044525
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Tinkering toward Utopia written by David B. TYACK and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century, Americans have translated their cultural anxieties and hopes into dramatic demands for educational reform. Although policy talk has sounded a millennial tone, the actual reforms have been gradual and incremental. Tinkering toward Utopia documents the dynamic tension between Americans' faith in education as a panacea and the moderate pace of change in educational practices. In this book, David Tyack and Larry Cuban explore some basic questions about the nature of educational reform. Why have Americans come to believe that schooling has regressed? Have educational reforms occurred in cycles, and if so, why? Why has it been so difficult to change the basic institutional patterns of schooling? What actually happened when reformers tried to reinvent schooling? Tyack and Cuban argue that the ahistorical nature of most current reform proposals magnifies defects and understates the difficulty of changing the system. Policy talk has alternated between lamentation and overconfidence. The authors suggest that reformers today need to focus on ways to help teachers improve instruction from the inside out instead of decreeing change by remote control, and that reformers must also keep in mind the democratic purposes that guide public education.
