Download or read book One Hundred Years of Sea Power written by George W. Baer and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1996-07-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A navy is a state's main instrument of maritime force. What it should do, what doctrine it holds, what ships it deploys, and how it fights are determined by practical political and military choices in relation to national needs. Choices are made according to the state's goals, perceived threat, maritime opportunity, technological capabilities, practical experience, and, not the least, the way the sea service defines itself and its way of war. This book is a history of the modern U.S. Navy. It explains how the Navy, in the century after 1890, was formed and reformed in the interaction of purpose, experience, and doctrine.

Download or read book One Hundred Years at the Intersection of Chemistry and Physics written by Jeremiah James and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, occasioned by the centenary of the Fritz Haber Institute, formerly the Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, covers the institute's scientific and institutional history from its founding until the present. The institute was among the earliest established by the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, and its inauguration was one of the first steps in the development of Berlin-Dahlem into a center for scientific research. Its establishment was made possible by an endowment from Leopold Koppel, granted on the condition that Fritz Haber, well-known for his discovery of a method to synthesize ammonia from its elements, be made its director. The history of the institute has largely paralleled that of 20th-century Germany. It undertook controversial weapons research during World War I, followed by a "Golden Era" during the 1920s, in spite of financial hardships. Under the National Socialists it experienced a purge of its scientific staff and a diversion of its research into the service of the new regime, accompanied by a breakdown in its international relations. In the immediate aftermath of World War II it suffered crippling material losses, from which it recovered slowly in the post-war era. In 1953, shortly after taking the name of its founding director, the institute joined the fledgling Max Planck Society. During the 1950s and 60s, the institute supported diverse researches into the structure of matter and electron microscopy in a territorially insular and politically precarious West-Berlin. In subsequent decades, as both Berlin and the Max Planck Society underwent significant changes, the institute reorganized around a board of coequal scientific directors and a renewed focus on the investigation of elementary processes on surfaces and interfaces, topics of research that had been central to the work of Fritz Haber and the first "Golden Era" of the institute.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Hundred Years of Chromosome Research: What Remains to be Learned, offers the reader a critical analysis of the observations and experiments that shaped the last 100 years of chromosome research, as well as the ideas which prevailed during this period. Emphasis is placed on what remains to be learned, particularly in light of reality of the sequencing of DNA which leaves the previous era of chromosome research as a prehistoric event. It is at this turning point, that well formulated questions can be asked about many of the chromosome's properties, which remain to be unveiled. The author, Lima-de-Faria is Professor Emeritus of Molecular Cytogenetics at Lund Unviersity, Sweden, previously Head of the Institute of Molecular Cytogenetics, Lund University.

Download or read book One Hundred Years of U S Navy Air Power written by Douglas V Smith and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to coincide with the centennial celebration of U.S. Navy Aviation, this book chronicles Navy aviation from its earliest days, before the Navy’s first aircraft carrier joined the fleet, through the modern jet era marked by the introduction of the F-18 Hornet. It tells how naval aviation got its start, profiles its pioneers, and explains the early bureaucracy that fostered and sometimes inhibited its growth. The book then turns to the refinement of carrier aviation doctrine and tactics and the rapid development of aircraft and carriers, highlighting the transition from propeller-driven aircraft to swept wing jets in the period after WW II. Land-based Navy aircraft, rotary-wing aircraft and rigid airships, and balloons are also considered in this sweeping tribute.
Download or read book Form Follows Finance written by Carol Willis and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 1995-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to standard histories that counterpose the design philosophies of the Chicago and New York "schools," Form Follows Finance shows how market formulas produced characteristic forms in each city - "vernaculars of capitalism" - that resulted from local land-use patterns, municipal codes, and zoning. Refuting some common cliches of skyscraper history such as the equation of big buildings with big business and the idea of a "corporate skyline," this book emphasizes the importance of speculative development and the impact of real estate cycles on the forms of buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book “Triangle of One Hundred Years Wars” provides an incredibly gripping and riveting South African historiography, chronologically articulated through an endogenous lens by a native South African. It chronicles a record reflective of the fundamental historical events within the southern part of Africa. The narrative delineates the adroitness of the visionary leadership of amaXhosa given the successes and failures on the protracted wars etched in the Eastern Cape region. Dr Jongi Joseph Klaas has a Bachelor of Pedagogics from the University of Fort Hare, South Africa; a Masters Degree from the from the University of Oklahoma in the United States of America and Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. In 2015 he published Memoirs of Relentless Pursuit. Currently, he is working on the battlefields of the African wars of resistance. ~ “When I wrote House of Phalo, more than 40 years ago, I could never have expected that we would have to wait so long for an African perspective.” Professor Jeff Peires “The book itself is a victory, it is a reward to those heroes who fought wars of resistance.” Ms Vathiswa Nhanha, Librarian at Cory Library, Rhodes University. “Jongi Klaas redefines the telling of history, his stories have a soul, they live in you.” Professor Ncedile Saule
