Download or read book Year of the Sword written by Joseph Yacoub and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Armenian genocide of 1915 has been well documented. Much less known is the Turkish genocide of the Assyrian, Chaldean and Syriac peoples, which occurred simultaneously in their ancient homelands in and around ancient Mesopotamia - now Turkey, Iran and Iraq. The advent of the First World War gave the Young Turks and the Ottoman government the opportunity to exterminate the Assyrians in a series of massacres and atrocities inflicted on a people whose culture dates back millennia and whose language, Aramaic, was spoken by Jesus. Systematic killings, looting, rape, kidnapping and deportations destroyed countless communities and created a vast refugee diaspora. As many as 300,000 Assyro-Chaldean- Syriac people were murdered and a larger number forced into exile. The "Year of the Sword" (Seyfo) in 1915 was preceded over millennia by other attacks on the Assyrians and has been mirrored by recent events, not least the abuses committed by Islamic State. Joseph Yacoub, whose family was murdered and dispersed, has gathered together a compelling range of eye-witness accounts and reports which cast light on this 'hidden genocide.' Passionate and yet authoritative in its research, his book reveals a little-known human and cultural tragedy. A century after the Assyrian genocide, the fate of this Christian minority hangs in the balance.

Download or read book Oromo Democracy written by Asmarom Legesse and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book reveals the many creative solutions an African society found for problems that people encounter when they try to establish a democratic system of governing their affairs. In much of what has been written about Africa ... Little is ever shown of indigenous African democratic systems, under which there is distribution of authority and responsibility across various strata of society, and where warriors are subordinated to deliberative assemblies, customary laws are revised periodically by a national convention, and elected leaders are limited to a single eight-year terms of office and subjected to public review in the middle of their term. All these ideals and more are enshrined in the five-century old constitution of the Oromo of Ethiopia, which is the subject matter of this book. In this book, Legesse brings into sharp focus the polycephalous or "multi-headed" system of government of the Oromo, which is based on clearly defined division of labor and checks and balances between different institutions. Revealing the inherent dynamism and sophistication of this indigenous African political system, Legasse also shows in clear and lucid language that the system has had a long and distinguished history, during which the institutions changed by deliberate legislation, and evolved and adapted with time."--Amazon.com.

Download or read book Evangelical Christianity in Australia written by Stuart Piggin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical Christianity is one of the most formative and least acknowledged movements in Australian history. This book accords evangelicals their rightful place in the development of Australian identity and values. Evangelicalism focuses on the Gospel, the God-given means not only of the salvation of individuals, but also of the renovation of society and culture. In this original and stimulating study, Stuart Piggin argues that evangelicalism is strongest when it synthesises Biblical orthodoxy with spiritual passion and human compassion. When this synthesis was achieved, it resulted in spiritual vitality and the strengthening of Australian nationhood. Based on interviews with a large number of Christian leaders and on a variety of often rare sources, Piggin's account throws light on matters as disparate as the character and motivation of early chaplains, the 'sinless perfection' movement at the University of Sydney in the 1930s, the Billy Graham Crusades, and disputes over the ordination of women. Evangelical Christianity: Spirit, Word and World traces the development of Biblical scholarship and the strengthening of Reformed Christianity, the surprisingly frequent incidence of genuine religious revival, and the creative commitment of evangelicals to the shaping of national values.
