Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Years of Book Auctions, 1807-1907: Being a Brief Record of the Firm of Hodgsons and Co; (Commonly Known as "Hodgsons") In the sphere of bibliography - and it may be mentioned in passing, that in 1807 the word bibliography was not known in its present sense - the great Dibdin had hardly commenced the publication of those elaborate bibliographical works which, though Often inaccurate, contain so much curious and amusing information about books and printers, book-collectors and sales by auction. The second edition of Biblio mania, which appeared in 1811, had no small share in exciting that interest in rare books and early editions, which appeared to reach a climax at the famous Roxburghe sale in 1812, but which, if prices are any criterion, is still growing in intensity. One saying alone of Dr. Dibdin's, amply suffices to show the distance we have travelled with regard to prices since he lived. Referring in 1812 to the sum Of121 163. Paid for a copy of the First Folio Shakespeare, he said it was the highest price ever given, or likely to be given for the book - yet, only recently, has been paid for this most famous book, and he would be a bold man who would say, even now, that the highest limit has been reached. That this interest in the early edi tions Of famous and rare books centred largely round the auction sales, was shown indeed by the fact that Dibdin, in his second and much en larged edition, added a new chapter on The Auction Room. By this addition he resolves, as explained in the preface, to gratify a cer tain book-auction-loving Bibliomaniac and similar collectors, whose approbation also he hopes to gain, by the motto prefixed to the chap ter in question from Clavell's Catalogue of Books for 1680 a catalogue of no small in terest in the early history of book-auctions. Robert Watt had hardly commenced in 1807 his great Bibliotheca Britannica, which despite untiring industry was not completed until after his death; while Lowndes was not to publish the original edition of his Bibliographer's Manual - a work which has the oft-forgotten merit of being the first systematic bibliography of the kind in England - until nearly thirty years later. Book The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature Volume 4 1900 1950

Download or read book The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature Volume 4 1900 1950 written by George Watson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1972-12-07 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 4 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Book The Library of Richard Porson

Download or read book The Library of Richard Porson written by P. G. Naiditch and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12-28 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing this book three questions chiefly interested me. What books and pamphlets did Richard Porson own? From whom did he acquire these materials? What has become of his holdings? Answering the first question was relatively easy. For over two hundred years students have known that, after his death, Porsons library was divided into two unequal parts. The larger portion was sent to auction, the smaller part, together with Porsons papers, was separately sold to Trinity College, Cambridge. To treat the problem I have examined all of the microfilm set of the Sotheby auction catalogues from 1783 to 1808, save when catalogues were not marked or the markings were too faint to decipher: notably Jan. 1, 1785; May 29, 1786; Jan. 22 and May 1, 1797; June 1788; Jan. 13, 1789; May 26, 1791; June 22, 1795; Jan. 1796; 1800; Nov. 14, 1803 through Dec. 3, 1804 (twenty-three catalogues); April 18 and May 29, 1805; April 14-30, May 19, June 5, July 2, 10, 15, 1806...or when the microfilm is imperfect. Likewise, I have seen, in London, most of Christies book catalogues from 1782 to 1808; and, in Los Angeles, much of the Frank Marcham collection at UCLA (coll. 416 boxes 10-34). Finally, I have seen almost all of Porsons books at Trinity and a few other places. From 1786 to 1808, Porson purchased hundreds of books and pamphlets. The records allow us to trace his purchases at forty-seven auctions. Of these, Leigh & Sotheby presented most of the sales. But Porson also bought at sales offered through Edwards, Robson and Clarke, King & Loche, and he at least interested himself in a Stewart sale. In addition, one has to take into account books given to Porson as prizes or gifts; perhaps books entrusted to him for review; and books for which he subscribed. Addressing the second question is complicated by three factors. First, there is the imperfection of the records. The archives of most houses do not sirvive; even the L&S house-files are, on occasion, imperfect or incompletely legible. Secondly, clerks wrote down what they heard. Often enough, they heard Pawson or Pauson, and it was needful to establish identity. Thirdly, there are difficulties in the way of determining specific editions: these range from the existence of multiple editions or impressions to incompleteness of library records and of descriptions of volumes of tracts.
