It does not pretend to be any thing more than a collection of one hundred suggestive lessons on natural objects, such as have been given in the public school at Chath'am, New Jersey, during the past two years. This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Study One Hundred Lessons About Plants Nature Study is new; Liebig was the first man who used a laboratory for instruction. He began his career as a teacher in 1824. Courses in mathematics and language have had centuries in which to perfect their methods of instruction and the lessons it is best to offer; for this reason, lessons in these subjects are good, if not the best, that can be offered, and the methods of giving them have had opportunity to eliminate errors. The teacher of nature study has almost no past to guide him. The older teach ers of nature study were not themselves taught in schools. As a department of instruction it is without traditions or precedents. Every serious teacher so far has had to pave his own road. All teachers have gone different roads. It could not be otherwise. The material with which nature study deals, is inexhaustible; no one can ever be acquainted with more than an insignificant frac tion of it. It is all good. It will always be the case that success ful teachers will give what they know. They will accordingly teach different things. It is probably true that every successful teacher has, from year to year, taken his pupils over different ground, and that everything done has proved to be good. What it is best to teach we cannot yet tell, in other words, than that that material is best which can be bad. This nature study work has passed through three phases. It was first taught from books. The only nature study work I ever did in school was in Geography and Physiology and every syllable of these came from books. We next added the laboratory. How new this phase of the subject is, may be learned from the presi dential address of Dr. Wiley before the Indiana Science Teachers' Association at Lafayette, in 1895. He says: Prior to 1863 no laboratory instruction was given in Indiana except a little in qualitative analysis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Nature-Study Idea, Liberty Hyde Bailey articulated the essence of a social movement, led by ordinary public-school teachers, that lifted education out of the classroom and placed it into firsthand contact with the natural world. The aim was simple but revolutionary: sympathy with nature to increase the joy of living and foster stewardship of the earth. With this definitive edition, John Linstrom reintroduces The Nature-Study Idea as an environmental classic for our time. It provides historical context through a wealth of related writings, and introductory essays relate Bailey's vision to current work in education and the intersection of climate change and culture. In this period of planetary turmoil, Bailey's ambition to cultivate wonder (in adults as well as children) and lead readers back into the natural world is more important than ever.

Download or read book Lessons in Nature Study Classic Reprint written by Nellie Barton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Nature Study The months of September and October furnished us an abun dance oi material for our study, from the living world. Some was most beautiful, and all most wonderful and interesting. The children watched with a feeling of awe, the preparation for winter when all nature lay down to sleep. The tree's put on their gayest dresses and from day to day we watched the coloring process until at last, one day, late in October, we looked out upon a world of such beauty that we exclaimed in delight: Never in all the world was anything so beautiful! During all this time we had been walking among the trees, had passed the walnuts, and noted that very early ln the fall they' were left with scarcely a leaf on the branches, that soon the hackberry, iron wood, and box elder began to quietly loosen their' hold and flutter to the ground. Leaves were collected from the trees, pressed, mounted, and hung in the school - room, to brighten the walls during the winter months, and incidentally to familiarize the pupil with the different leaf forms, and the printed or written name of the tree.
