Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Latin Hymns This volume is the result of a critical reading of over eight hundred Latin hymns, psalms, and canticles. The treatment of the subject is as nearly chronological as the nature of the material permits, thus making it a suitable compendium for a brief study of this minor but unique part of Latin literature. The notes and lists of hymns in the appendix are arranged for convenience of reference with titles or first lines in alphabetical order, the source - author, breviary or period - and a place where each hymn may be found. Great uncertainty prevails as to authorship and date of many of the hymns although approximation to a period is generally to be trusted. While the commentary is intelligible to a reader not familiar with the Latin, a sufficient number of hymns in the original are given to make it a collection representative of the principal styles and the important periods so that it may be used as a collateral text-book in the study of lyrics of the post-classic ages. The work is without doctrinal bias; its chief interest, however, lies in the fact that although pursued in a purely historical way, it reveals the value of the Christian hymns as human documents. In the expression of religious feeling, hymn-writers of periods and places remote from each other are bound by an indissoluble bond which as intimately unites our time and theirs. Book Hymns and Hymnody Historical and Theological Introductions Volume 1

Download or read book Hymns and Hymnody Historical and Theological Introductions Volume 1 written by Mark A. Lamport and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns and the music the church sings are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the, central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is a 60-chapter, three-volume introductory textbook describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers that have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. We believe it is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect, we contend, is missing--yet important--in accessible formats for the current literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Latin Hymnaries: An Index of Hymns in Hymnaries Before 1100, With an Appendix From Later Sources An exhaustive index of all Latin Hymnaries before 1500 would mean visits to countless libraries, and an amount of toil and outlay probably out of all proportion to, the results. The present index provides, on a more modest scale, a convenient book of reference for those interested in early Latin hymns; and gives at any rate a fair idea of what Latin hymns were actually used over Europe before the year 1100. In order to Show the continuity of use throughout the Medieval period some Hymnaries of the twelfth century, with a few later still, princi pally written in England, have also been indexed; many of these manuscripts have the ancient melodies set to the hymns. In the main index references are given to all the hymnaries, but the first lines included are only of hymns found in mss before 1100; the first lines of those found only in the mss after 1100 are grouped together as an Appendix. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first mention of Christian Latin hymns by a known author occurs in the writings of St. Jerome who states that Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers (c. 310-366), a noted author of commentaries and theological works, wrote a Liber Hymnorum. This collection has never been recovered in its entirety. Hilary’s priority as a hymn writer is attested by Isidore of Seville (d. 636) who says: Hilary, however, Bishop of Poitiers in Gaul, a man of unusual eloquence, was the first prominent hymn writer. More important than his prior claim is the motive which actuated him, the defense of the Trinitarian doctrine, to which he was aroused by his controversy with the Arians. A period of four years as an exile in Phrygia for which his theological opponents were responsible, made him familiar with the use of hymns in the oriental church to promote the Arian heresy. Hilary wrested a sword, so to speak, from his adversaries and carried to the west the hymn, now a weapon of the orthodox. His authentic extant hymns, three in number, must have been a part of the Liber Hymnorum. Ante saecula qui manens, “O Thou who dost exist before time,” is a hymn of seventy verses in honor of the Trinity; Fefellit saevam verbum factum te, caro, “The Incarnate Word hath deceived thee (Death)” is an Easter hymn; and Adae carnis gloriosae, “In the person of the Heavenly Adam” is a hymn on the theme of the temptation of Jesus. They are ponderous in style and expression and perhaps too lengthy for congregational use since they were destined to be superseded. In addition to these the hymn Hymnum dicat turba fratrum, “Let your hymn be sung, ye faithful,” has been most persistently associated with Hilary’s name. The earliest text occurs in a seventh century manuscript. It is a metrical version of the life of Jesus in seventy-four lines, written in the same meter as that of Adae carnis gloriosae.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Latin Hymns: With Introduction and Notes Mr. A. S. Walpole died February 20, 1920.A few days before his death he sent me all his notes for the present book, with the request that I would prepare the book for publication and see it through the press. In some ways this was not difficult for me to do. For more than twenty years we had worked at the hymns together. Again and again I had been allowed to go at leisure through the successive drafts of his commentary, criticizing and suggesting, so that I was fairly acquainted with his final views on almost every point of interpretation. A few notes of my own have been added which Mr Walpole had not seen. They are distinguished by being enclosed in square brackets. But for the most part the book represents what Mr Walpole himself had written and approved, and my editorial task has been confined to final arrangements and adjustments. Nevertheless it is a matter for great regret that Mr Walpole did not live to see the work through for himself. He was a scholar who had read deep and wide in Latin literature. He had taken immense pains over this work. In order, for instance, to judge of the authorship of the hymns attributed to St Ambrose, he had read through the whole of that author's prose works, marking every feature of his thought and every peculiarity of his diction and style. So he did with other authors. He was always learning something fresh to throw light upon the hymns. He wrote the whole series out at least half a dozen times in his clear, strong hand. So many volumes of his notes remain that the chief embarrassment has been to co ordinate them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
