Book American Harvest

Download or read book American Harvest written by Marie Mutsuki Mockett and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic story of the American wheat harvest, the politics of food, and the culture of the Great Plains For over one hundred years, the Mockett family has owned a seven-thousand-acre wheat farm in the panhandle of Nebraska, where Marie Mutsuki Mockett’s father was raised. Mockett, who grew up in bohemian Carmel, California, with her father and her Japanese mother, knew little about farming when she inherited this land. Her father had all but forsworn it. In American Harvest, Mockett accompanies a group of evangelical Christian wheat harvesters through the heartland at the invitation of Eric Wolgemuth, the conservative farmer who has cut her family’s fields for decades. As Mockett follows Wolgemuth’s crew on the trail of ripening wheat from Texas to Idaho, they contemplate what Wolgemuth refers to as “the divide,” inadvertently peeling back layers of the American story to expose its contradictions and unhealed wounds. She joins the crew in the fields, attends church, and struggles to adapt to the rhythms of rural life, all the while continually reminded of her own status as a person who signals “not white,” but who people she encounters can’t quite categorize. American Harvest is an extraordinary evocation of the land and a thoughtful exploration of ingrained beliefs, from evangelical skepticism of evolution to cosmopolitan assumptions about food production and farming. With exquisite lyricism and humanity, this astonishing book attempts to reconcile competing versions of our national story.

Download or read book Strange Harvests written by Edward Posnett and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original and magical map of our world and its riches, formed of the stories of the small-scale harvests of seven natural objects In this beguiling book, Edward Posnett journeys to some of the most far-flung locales on the planet to bring us seven wonders of the natural world--eiderdown, edible birds' nests, civet coffee, sea silk, vicuña fiber, vegetable ivory, and guano--that promise ways of using nature without damaging it. To the rest of the world these materials are mere commodities, but to their harvesters they are imbued with myth, tradition, folklore, and ritual, and form part of a shared identity and history. Strange Harvests follows the journeys of these uncommon products from some of the most remote areas of the world to its most populated urban centers, drawing on the voices of the people and little-known communities who harvest, process, and trade them. Blending history, travel writing, and interviews, Posnett sets these human stories against our changing economic and ecological landscape. What do they tell us about capitalism, global market forces, and overharvesting? How do local microeconomies survive in a hyperconnected world? Is it possible for us to live together with different species? Strange Harvests makes us see the world with wonder, curiosity, and new concern.

Book excerpt: You reap what you sow in Beldam Woods.Once upon a time there was a town called Beldam Woods, where all of the people lived happy, carefree lives and no one wanted for anything. All of the children at the schools studied hard and learned their lessons. All of the adults were true to their spouses and everyone was content. At least that's what the travel brochures say. They don't tell you about the puddle of blood found inside the local veterinary clinic, or about the old librarian found torn to pieces inside his house. They don't mention the troubles the police are having with their investigations into local crimes, or about the petty jealousies that have grown between the students attending the local public school and the kids going to the upper crust private academy. Those brochures fail to mention the odd vegetation growing in the woods not far from the town, or the reasons that everything in the Witch's Hollow is poisonous to eat or even to touch.None of the literature written about Beldam Woods talks of human sacrifices or the desecration of new graves; there's not a word written down about the monsters that allegedly lived there in the past, or what the townsfolk did to them. And most importantly, there's no mention of what happens when the monsters come back to put paid to some old debts...

Book excerpt: DANCE FOR A HARVEST is a book that instructs those laborers wanting to go deeper into the things of God and to be used more mightily in these last days. Written by dance veteran Lucie Poirier, you'll read how she went from exotic dancer to dancing before God Himself. She provides candid and valuable insight into not just the dance, but how to become a weapon in the hands of the Living God, regardless of your calling and ministry. This book offers the reader: - A description of what the dance communicates in the spirit realm; - A reference guide for dancers that provides details on how to empower your dance; - Biblically-sound teaching and advice on recognizing your authority, identity and place in Jesus Christ and how to use this knowledge to properly and effectively wield your weapon of warfare; - The "what, when, where, why and how-to" that's needed for these end times, not just for dancers, but for anyone in ministry; Lucie helped me find the dancer inside of me and built my confidence in the dance. Melody Bolduc Worship Leader This is a must-read book. It's full of wisdom and "aha " moments that intensifies your spiritual walk with the Lord. I was truly blessed by this book and would highly recommend putting it at the top of your list of reading material, regardless of your area of ministry or your calling. Sherrie Clark Writer & Editor

Book Harvest of a Decade

  • Author : Walter Laqueur
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2011-12-31

Download or read book Harvest of a Decade written by Walter Laqueur and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a selection of essays written during the first decade of the twenty-first century, by a figure widely acknowledged as the conscience of European liberalism. In Walter Laqueur’s lifetime, there have been more acutely dangerous situations, such as the coming of a world war or the seemingly unstoppable march to victory of totalitarian regimes, than in any other previous epoch. Such immediate dangers may not exist at the present time. But long-term trends are equally or even more threatening, as we now see in the ability of small groups of people, unprecedented in history, to inflict enormous damage. This is the underlying essence of Laqueur’s thinking, as expressed in this new volume. As Laqueur observes, one learns from long experience that the worst does not always happen, and if it does, probably not in one’s lifetime. Ideas and intellectual fashions emerging from the groves of academe, particularly in America can seem wrongheaded and often out of touch with the real world. This growing isolation causes growing bitterness, alienation, and a feeling of impotence on the part of intellectuals, which turns into greater radicalization and farfetched thinking. Laqueur fortunately does not fall into this trap. The articles and essays selected for this volume deal with a variety of topics. They do not entirely reflect Laqueur’s interests, which during this period were more in the cultural field than in politics. However, politics intrude irrespective of the author’s predilections. Laqueur deals with unpleasant truths in concrete geopolitical settings, but poignantly takes his stand with the men and women who strive to overcome self-censorship in the search for accurate judgment.

Book excerpt: A book written to instruct and inform Christians about the Power that we have resident in us. Jesus tells the disciples in Luke: 10; l9, Behold, I give unto you Power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. This generation has failed to teach what the Bible tells us. Because we are worried about what the world has to say: (we want to be politically correct). And as a result this generation has very little knowledge of what the Word has to teach us. This book gives the reader the Biblical Facts about those who should be rulers over us and what The Word has to say about rulers, isnt what the politicians want you to believe. When those in charge over us are ungodly men then the laws that they make are to help them keep their positions, their agenda, and their authority. I believe that you will enjoy reading this book. And you will want all of your friends and associates to read it also.

Book The Harvest of the Saints

Download or read book The Harvest of the Saints written by Jim Wainscott and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harvest of the Saints is a sequel to The Eleventh-Hour Overcomers. Its intent is to continue the overcoming theme by exploring a little-known rapture theory that has been hidden in the shadows for much of the last century. Unlike most rapture scenarios that rely upon a limited framework of supporting Scripture, the harvest concept is based on a compelling body of biblical evidence that also provides insight into other related end-time events. Specific topics include: The clearly defined Old Testament pattern of a traditional harvest and its application to an end-time harvest of the saints. Why Jesus will come both as a thief in the night and visibly in the clouds as our conquering King The importance of overcoming and the Lords conditional promise concerning the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth (Rev. 3:10) Why outer darkness and the lake of fire represent two separate areas of confinement established to serve two entirely different purposes Why many of the details of Gods meticulously-designed end-time plan have been hidden from our eyes Please join me as we bring the harvest concept out of the shadows and into the light where we can test all things; [and] hold fast what is good (1 Thess. 5:21).
