Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epigrams of Martial The literature of imperial Rome has powerfully influenced the civilization of the Western world; and, amid the vast changes of our social system, still continues to maintain its high place in the republic of letters. This is due partly to the grandeur of the people by whom the language was spoken, but more so to the illustrious writers who wedded it to intellectual creations that must ever be models for study and admiration. Among these writers, Martial stands as the first Epigrammatist, not only of his own, but of every succeeding age. The bent of his genius seems to have lain entirely in this direction. Everything he penned, whether begging a favour, satirizing a fault, writing an inscription, or paying a compliment, was an epigram. The word epigram originally signified, as its etymology implies, nothing more than an inscription. But in the development which it received in the progress of literature, and especially at the hands of Martial, it assumed an entirely new character, and may be de fined as the concentration of satire and pointed invective in a short poem. One idea is selected, and to this all the powers of the poet's mind are directed, and made to converge as to a point. To the gracefulness of the Greek epigram the Romans super added shrewdness and an acute observation of human nature: the shafts of Martial are pointed by the same sarcastic feeling which inspired the Epodes of Horace, and the Satires of Juvenal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Epigrams of Martial: Spectaculorum Liber and Books I-Vi This edition of selected epigrams from the first six books Of Martial is intended for the use of upper forms in schools. There are two reasons why Martial should be read in these forms. In the first place, his epigrams belong to a distinct species of literature, characteristically Roman both in form and matter. Secondly, Martial throws a valuable and instructive light on the social life of Rome in the first century of our era. If these are the two reasons why boys still at school should read Martial, yet it is probably true that they should read him rapidly and without the rigid attention to detail which is necessary in studying the best classical writers. It has been our aim, there fore, to keep our notes concise, and not to fill the place of the dictionary and the atlas, but, as far as possible, to make clear the thought and point of each epigram. With this end in view a short abstract of the meaning is prefixed to the notes on each poem, but few attempts have been made to supply ready-made translation. In the Introduction has been added a connected account of certain features of Roman life which are constantly referred to in the epigrams; this seemed better than writing short and scattered notes on the passages concerned. We have also given a biographical index of some of the proper names occurring in the text, and we hope that our general index may be of use in finding references in the poet to the many features of Roman life on which he touches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Epigrams of Martial: For English Readers A few words on Roman domestic life and manners in Martial's day may be added in illustration of our author, whose writings themselves provide us with an almost inexhaustible fund of information on this topic. And perhaps what strikes him most who looks back upon these old times, is the truth ofthat somewhat trite phrase of Shakspere's, in its ordinary acceptation. Book Martial Select Epigrams

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite his enduring popularity, Martial has recently suffered from serious critical neglect. The present work is the first edition of selections from Martial to be published for decades, and includes a fully representative selection of the oeuvre of the poet, who has often been criticised, unfairly, the authors argue, for obscenity and flattery of the Emperor Domitian. The epigrams included in the selection are organised under various heads, e.g. Martial and poetry, sexual mores, satirical pieces. A very full introduction deals with such topics as the prejudices and predilections of his audience which conditioned Martial's choice of subject matter, Martial's language, the structure and style of the epigrams, the epigrammatic tradition and Martial's creative engagement with it. The detailed commentary is suitable for use with undergraduates and is distinguished by its focus on social history as well as literary interpretation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Epigrams of Martial: Edited With Introduction, Notes, and Appendices The Romanising of Gaul and Spain was followed among other results by a large influx into Rome from those provinces, of literary talent, and, in some cases, genius. Spain in particular during the latter half of the first century after Christ, was represented at Rome by a number of literary men of various excellence. Of some of these the works remain, those of others have perished. Some of them, like Martial's friend Canius, sported in light effusions not intended to live, others, such as Seneca, Lucan, Quintilian, produced work which the world uses still. Some of them were mere amateurs, or at least, imitators who followed in the wake of other writers, while others made themselves acknowledged as masters in the branches of literature to which they devoted themselves. To the latter class belongs M. Valerius Martialis. Of the early years of this poet's life, before he came to Rome, we know next to nothing - only his birth-place, and (probably) the names of his parents.
