Book Theology and Literature in the Age of Johnson

Download or read book Theology and Literature in the Age of Johnson written by Melvyn New and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology and Literature in the Age of Johnson: Resisting Secularism contains seventeen essays exploring the complex relationships between literary intentions and theological concerns of authors writing in the second half of the eighteenth century. The diversity of literary forms and subjects, from Fielding and Richardson to Burke and Wollstonecraft, is matched by a diversity of approaches and theologies. To argue that the age “resisted secularism” is by no means to argue that resistance was blindly doctrinal or rigidly uniform. The many ways secularism could be resisted is the subject of the collection. Published by University of Delaware Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Book Samuel Richardson in Context

Download or read book Samuel Richardson in Context written by Peter Sabor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of his novel Pamela; or Virtue Rewarded in 1740, Samuel Richardson's place in the English literary tradition has been secured. But how can that place best be described? Over the three centuries since embarking on his printing career the 'divine' novelist has been variously understood as moral crusader, advocate for women, pioneer of the realist novel and print innovator. Situating Richardson's work within these social, intellectual and material contexts, this new volume of essays identifies his centrality to the emergence of the novel, the self-help book, and the idea of the professional author, as well as his influence on the development of the modern English language, the capitalist economy, and gendered, medicalized, urban, and national identities. This book enables a fuller understanding and appreciation of Richardson's life, work and legacy, and points the way for future studies of one of English literature's most celebrated novelists.

Book Exilius Or the Banish d Roman Dodo Press

Download or read book Exilius Or the Banish d Roman Dodo Press written by Jane Barker and published by . This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Barker (1652-1732) was an English poet and novelist of the early 18th century. The Amours of Bosvil and Galesia (1713) was considered her most successful work. A staunch Jacobite, she followed King James II of England into exile at Saint- Germain-en-Laye in France shortly after James' defeat in the Glorious Revolution (1688). During her exile, she wrote a group of political poems, A Collection of Poems Referring to the Times (1701), which conveyed her anxiety towards the political future of England. She later became a novelist and wrote Exilius; or, The Banish'd Roman (1715), A Patch-Work Screen for the Ladies (1723) and The Lining of the Patch-Work Screen (1726). Barker was never married and her works show a strong lack of interest in marriage. Instead, she sought to challenge the status quo of female subordination.
