Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sad Fish. Who is the sad fish? I believe that all the world's fish are sad. In this story the sad fish is Red Fish and his friend Blue Fish. Why would fish be sad? Let's begin with the water. Water is a gift from God. All living people, creatures, plants, animals, and fish need water to survive live and flourish. This is what Red Fish is trying to say to the people of planet Earth. It is not enough that people are destructive to everything on Earth. It is also the fact that people take things for granted. This is especially true with water! People like to camp and fish near water. As a result, they leave all of their garbage and plastic bottles on the ground or in the water. In this story Red Fish writes a letter to the people of planet Earth asking them to stop polluting and being so destructive to our planet. While living in the streams of Mt. Baldy, Red Fish lived a normal fish life, swimming around and playing with his friend Blue Fish. While swimming around, Red Fish noticed that his stream had become polluted with garbage and plastic bottles. Red Fish and Blue Fish noticed that other fish were dying from all the garbage and plastic bottles in the water. It was at that moment that Red Fish realized that all the fish might die. The message that Red Fish is trying to say to the people of planet Earth is that "we all may die," fish and people. If people of planet Earth thought like Red Fish, all the water would be free of garbage and plastic bottles. Red Fishes message: "I am a sad fish. Stop polluting our world. Stop being so destructive to our planet Earth. We would like you to stop so that we all can live. Water is life!"

He fell in love with the black mistress of the warder and discovered too late that to love is not safe; he attempted to keep a record of the strange reality he saw in prison, only to realize that history is not written by those who are ruled. Acclaimed as a masterpiece around the world, Gould’s Book of Fish is at once a marvelously imagined epic of nineteenth-century Australia and a contemporary fable, a tale of horror, and a celebration of love, all transformed by a convict painter into pictures of fish.

Book excerpt: "Native Pacific Islander writer Craig Santos Perez has crafted a timely collection of eco-poetry comprised of free verse, prose, haiku, sonnets, satire, and a form he calls "recycling." Habitat Threshold begins with the birth and growth of the author's daughter and captures her childlike awe at the wondrous planet. As the book progresses, however, Perez confronts the impacts of environmental injustice, global capitalism, toxic waste, animal extinctions, water struggles, human violence, mass migration, and climate change. Throughout, Perez mourns lost habitats and species and faces his fears about the world his daughter will inherit. Yet this work does not end at the threshold of elegy; instead, the poet envisions a sustainable future in which our ethics are shaped by the indigenous belief that the earth is sacred and all beings are interconnected--a future in which we cultivate love and "carry each other towards the horizon of care.""--

But how will he find the words to tell them that he’s gay? A powerful read about family, identity and the enduring magic of stories. “One of the most astounding graphic novels of the year" –Entertainment Weekly Tien and his mother may come from different cultures—she’s an immigrant from Vietnam still struggling with English; he’s been raised in America—but through the fairy tales he checks out from the local library, those differences are erased. But as much as Tien’s mother’s English continues to improve as he reads her tales of love, loss, and travel across distant shores, there’s one conversation that still eludes him—how to come out to her and his father. Is there even a way to explain what he’s going through in Vietnamese? And without a way to reveal his hidden self, how will his parents ever accept him? This beautifully illustrated graphic novel speaks to the complexity of family and how stories can bring us together even when we don’t know the words. “A lyrical masterpiece.” –BuzzFeed

Book The Dead Fish Museum

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles D'Ambrosio
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2006-04-18
  • ISBN : 0307264734
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book The Dead Fish Museum written by Charles D'Ambrosio and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In the fall, I went for walks and brought home bones. The best bones weren’t on trails—deer and moose don’t die conveniently—and soon I was wandering so far into the woods that I needed a map and compass to find my way home. When winter came and snow blew into the mountains, burying the bones, I continued to spend my days and often my nights in the woods. I vaguely understood that I was doing this because I could no longer think; I found relief in walking up hills. When the night temperatures dropped below zero, I felt visited by necessity, a baseline purpose, and I walked for miles, my only objective to remain upright, keep moving, preserve warmth. When I was lost, I told myself stories . . .” So Charles D’Ambrosio recounted his life in Philipsburg, Montana, the genesis of the brilliant stories collected here, six of which originally appeared in The New Yorker. Each of these eight burnished, terrifying, masterfully crafted stories is set against a landscape that is both deeply American and unmistakably universal. A son confronts his father’s madness and his own hunger for connection on a misguided hike in the Pacific Northwest. A screenwriter fights for his sanity in the bleak corridors of a Manhattan psych ward while lusting after a ballerina who sets herself ablaze. A Thanksgiving hunting trip in Northern Michigan becomes the scene of a haunting reckoning with marital infidelity and desperation. And in the magnificent title story, carpenters building sets for a porn movie drift dreamily beneath a surface of sexual tension toward a racial violence they will never fully comprehend. Taking place in remote cabins, asylums, Indian reservations, the backloads of Iowa and the streets of Seattle, this collection of stories, as muscular and challenging as the best novels, is about people who have been orphaned, who have lost connection, and who have exhausted the ability to generate meaning in their lives. Yet in the midst of lacerating difficulty, the sensibility at work in these fictions boldly insists on the enduring power of love. D’Ambrosio conjures a world that is fearfully inhospitable, darkly humorous, and touched by glory; here are characters, tested by every kind of failure, who struggle to remain human, whose lives have been sharpened rather than numbed by adversity, whose apprehension of truth and beauty has been deepened rather than defeated by their troubles. Many writers speak of the abyss. Charles D’Ambrosio writes as if he is inside of it, gazing upward, and the gaze itself is redemptive, a great yearning ache, poignant and wondrous, equal parts grit and grace. A must read for everyone who cares about literary writing, The Dead Fish Museum belongs on the same shelf with the best American short fiction.
