These are of particular relevance to gas turbine engines, internal combustion engine turbochargers, process compressors and cryogenic expanders. The aerodynamic design of the turbomachine is preliminary design to the specification of blade forms and computational fluid dynamic analysis of vane and blade passage flows. The treatment throughout is modern, with full recognition of current computer-aided design methods. Book excerpt: Six numerical examples are presented for steady, two-dimensional, compressible, nonviscous flow in centrifugal compressors with straight blades. A seventh example is presented for incompressible flow. The solutions also applye to radial-flow turbines with rotation and flow direction reversed. The effects of variations in following parameters were investigated: (1) flow rate, (2) impeller-tip speed, (3) variation of passage height with radius, and (4) number of blades. The numerical results are presented in plots of the streamlines, constant Mach number lines, and constant pressure-ratio lines. Correlation equations are developed whereby the flow conditions in any impeller with straight blades can be determined for all operating conditions.

Book excerpt: An analysis method and a design method are developed for one-dimensional, compressible flow with friction, heat transfer, and area change in vaneless diffusers with arbitrary profiles in the axial-radial plane. In the analyis method the varations in fluid properties are determined as a function of radius for a prescribed variation in diffuser wall spacing with radius. In the design method the variation in effective diffuser wall spacing is determined as a function of radius for an arbitrary prescribed variation in one fluid property. As a result of numerical examples it is concluded that: (1) The friction losses in most vaneless diffuser designs are considerable and these losses result from the usually large ratios of wetted surface to flow area in vaneless diffusers. (2) Vaneless diffuser efficiencies can be improved by increased compressor flow rates for a given impeller tip radius.
