Download or read book Steppenwolf written by Hermann Hesse and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Wayne presents a fresh new translation of this classic that is a particular favorite of young adults confronting life's deepest questions and equally liberating for readers facing a mid-life crisis. Basil Creighton's 1929 version (revised in 1963 by Joseph Mileck) is the best-known version in English; it skips words, smoothes out long, involved passages, unnecessarily "improves" the text ndash; all things Thomas Wayne refuses to do. As with his already published translations of Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra, Ecce Homo, and The Antichrist, he emphasizes a strict adherence and reverence for the literal ndash; a Hesse for the 21st century, meaningful and faithful to the original.
Download or read book One Dimensional Man written by Herbert Marcuse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important texts of modern times, Herbert Marcuse's analysis and image of a one-dimensional man in a one-dimensional society has shaped many young radicals' way of seeing and experiencing life. Published in 1964, it fast became an ideological bible for the emergent New Left. As Douglas Kellner notes in his introduction, Marcuse's greatest work was a 'damning indictment of contemporary Western societies, capitalist and communist.' Yet it also expressed the hopes of a radical philosopher that human freedom and happiness could be greatly expanded beyond the regimented thought and behaviour prevalent in established society. For those who held the reigns of power Marcuse's call to arms threatened civilization to its very core. For many others however, it represented a freedom hitherto unimaginable.

Book excerpt: A Puzzling Clue, Book 2 in the Puzzling Mystery Series. This book, first published by Penguin/Berkley/Prime Crime as A Killer Column under the penname Casey Mayes, is now offered to you as A Puzzling Clue by New York Times Bestselling Author Tim Myers, first in the Puzzling Mystery series. Savannah Stone’s puzzle editor and syndicator decides to fire several of his clients after bringing them all together, including Savannah. When she goes back to plead her case though, she finds that someone has decided to cancel the man himself, permanently. Suzanne must find the real killer based on the clues at the scene, or she’s in danger of being cancelled herself. PRAISE FOR THE PUZZLING MYSTERIES “Mayes is quite good at planting clues and red herrings. Those with a taste for the logic puzzles that Savannah creates may have more of an edge in solving this than readers who don't, but there are hints that a non-puzzle oriented reader can use to figure out the solution. A DEADLY ROW is quite a pleasant traditional mystery, with just enough police procedural thrown in to keep it interesting.” Reviewing The Evidence This is obviously a well thought out and plotted series.” Once Upon a Romance “GRID FOR MURDER (A PUZZLING CRIME) is an adeptly written, intriguing mystery. I anxiously await the next book in this series!” Fresh Fiction “Lots of mysteries to enjoy with this one!” The Neverending TBR “Casey Mayes has written a fascinating amateur sleuth-police procedural starring a husband and wife couple who work well together.” The Merry Genre Go Round Reviews “This was a good mystery with a great plot and lovable characters. The bonus of three puzzle games (two of which I aced) added to the enjoyable series and I can’t wait to spend more time with the Stone family.” Dru’s Book Musings

Download or read book Dynamics and Control of Electrical Drives written by Wach Piotr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamics is a science concerned with movement and changes. In the most general approach it relates to life processes as well as behavior in nature in rest. It governs small particles, technical objects, conversion of matter and materials but also concerns people, groups of people in their individual and, in particular, social dimension. In dynamics we always have to do with causes or stimuli for motion, the rules of reaction or behavior and its result in the form of trajectory of changes. This book is devoted to dynamics of a wide class of specific but very important objects such as electromechanical systems. This is a very rigorous discipline and has a long tradition, as its theoretical bases were formulated in the first half of the XIX century by d’ Alembert, Lagrange, Hamilton, Maxwell and other prominent scientists, but their crucial results were based on previous pioneering research of others such as Copernicus, Galileo, Newton... This book in its theoretical foundations is based on the principle of least action which governs classical as well as relativistic mechanics and electromagnetism and leads to Lagrange’s equations which are applied in the book as universal method to construct equations of motion of electromechanical systems. It gives common and coherent grounds to formulate mathematical models for all lumped parameters’ electromechanical systems, which are vital in our contemporary industry and civilized everyday life. From these remarks it seems that the book is general and theoretical but in fact it is a very practical one concerning modern electrical drives in a broad sense, including electromechanical energy conversion, induction motor drives, brushless DC drives with a permanent magnet excitation and switched reluctance machines (SRM). And of course their control, which means shaping of their trajectories of motion using modern tools, their designed autonomy in keeping a track according to our programmed expectations. The problems presented in the book are widely illustrated by characteristics, trajectories, dynamic courses all computed by use of developed simulation models throughout the book. There are some classical subjects and the history of the discipline is discussed but finally all modern tools and means are presented and applied. More detailed descriptions follow in abstracts for the particular chapters. The author hopes kind readers will enjoy and profit from reading this book.
Download or read book Brett A portrait of Brett Whiteley by his sister written by Frannie Hopkirk and published by Pan. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Brett was the sweetest, funniest, cleverest man I've ever known, my confidant and best friend. He had a rare radiance, an inner certainty which was compelling and hugely attractive.' Frannie Hopkirk knew Brett Whiteley all his life. He was her brother. Here, for the first time, one of those closest to Brett presents a vivid and movingly personal insight into his life and work. Throughout their lives, despite the sometimes vast geographical distances that separated them, brother and sister maintained a strong spiritual connection, an unbreakable bond. This brave, often painfully honest but loving portrait could only have been written by someone who Brett knew and trusted implicitly. They were born two years and one week apart into an average to extraordinary middle-class family. Brett was a streetwise larrikin from the very beginning, both a leader and a loner, spending hours drawing the harbour from his bedroom window in their Longueville home or plotting all kinds of mischief for his gang. Frannie adored her brother, and was a willing participant in his chaotic adventures. At the time Brett was awarded his travelling art scholarship and left for Europe, Frannie married and moved to New Zealand. Five years later, Frannie was the mother of five and Brett had stepped into the international art scene. Staying with Brett and Wendy in New York, Frannie had her first taste of the rock'n'roll generation that held such fascination for Brett, and her writing captures the essence of the hip '60s. The lives of brother and sister seemed to run on parallel lines, and often intersected. When the Whiteleys returned to Australia in the '70s, Frannie was part of the Lavender Bay scene. Throughout Brett's life Frannie watched and celebrated his success, as well as sharing his disappointments. She also experienced her own joys and tragedies as the mother of a large family in New Zealand, then living with her lover in London, eventually moving back to Sydney and then to the Central West of NSW, a landscape familiar to her and Brett from boarding school. This is her story too. For Brett Whiteley, art and life were intertwined. Frannie examines the relationship between her brother's life and art as she discusses Brett's major works and some lesser known paintings and drawings. She knew the young man who dreamed of fame as an artist while he sketched the ferries ploughing across Sydney Harbour. She understood when he painted The American Dream as a response to the toxic influence of American culture and violence, and she shared his devotion and connection to works such as Alchemy. During the last years of his life, Brett relied on Frannie and she became his closest friend. As his addiction to heroin deepened and ultimately controlled him, she offered him unconditional love. Her compassion and understanding set this book apart as a unique and moving account of the life of one of Australia's greatest artists.

Download or read book Leadership Challenges in High Schools written by W. Norton Grubb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principals are responsible for an increasing range of duties in an era of school reform, standardized testing, and more. These responsibilities are even greater in high schools, which are many times larger and more complex than elementary and middle schools. Yet little has been written on the special challenges of high schools and their leadership. This book fills the gap by exploring the challenges specific to high schools, including their size and complexity, the special difficulties in improving instruction, the crucial role of high schools for students' futures, adolescent behavioral issues, and many more. Grubb shows how principals and other leaders can address the complexities of multiple pathways, or efforts to create theme-based trajectories through high school - one of the most promising high school reforms. Looking to the future, he offers alternative ways of preparing professionals for high schools, and the responsibilities of districts for improving high schools and their leadership.
