Download or read book One Day in Bellagio written by Enrico Massetti and published by Enrico Massetti Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no mistake that Bellagio is called the "pearl" of Lake Como. It is undoubtedly the most famous resort on the lake. For centuries, Bellagio's scenic location has enchanted artists and writers, not only from Italy but also from abroad. It is situated on the tip of a headland that divides the lake into the two legs of Como and Lecco. The town stretches along the coast, and part of it goes up the slopes of the peninsula. Because of its location Bellagio has a great variety of views; indeed, it offers a good view of the whole lake. On the northern horizon, one can see the Pre-Alps. Some of the best views can be seen from the top of Monte San Primo and from the park of Villa Serbelloni. On a particularly bright day, one can make out the Alps, from Mont Blanc to the Ortles, and the Madonnina on top of the Duomo of Milan. Both the historic center situated at a higher level dominated by the Romanesque Basilica Of San Giacomo (enlarged in the Baroque Age) and the more recent arcade lake-front are all preserved intact. Among the aristocratic villas let's remember Villa Serbelloni, first castle, then country residence and transformed into a villa at the end of the 15th century. Later once again restructured in the 17th and turned into a hotel during the last decade of the 19th century, it is presently appointed headquarters of conventions and study tours. This guide covers Bellagio on Lake Como, from Lecco – Varenna, or, in an alternative, via Como. It covers also day trips with public transportation with the boats to towns and attractions on the lake. There are extensive descriptions and photos of the attractions. This guide contains many reviews for the best-recommended restaurants that are at walking distance from the boat pier or the train station. P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }

  • Pages : 398 pages

Download or read book Pompeii written by Alex Butterworth and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ***Please note that this ebook does not contain the photo insert that appears in the print book.*** The ash of Mt. Vesuvius preserves a living record of the complex and exhilarating society it instantly obliterated two thousand years ago. In this highly readable, lavishly illustrated book, Alex Butterworth and Ray Laurence marshal cutting-edge archaeological reconstructions and a vibrant historical tradition dating to Pliny and Tacitus; they present a richly textured portrait of a society not altogether unlike ours, composed of individuals ordinary and extraordinary who pursued commerce, politics, family and pleasure in the shadow of a killer volcano. Deeply resonant in a world still at the mercy of natural disaster, Pompeii recreates life as experienced in the city, and those frantic, awful hours in AD 79 that wiped the bustling city from the face of the earth.

Download or read book The Golden Legend written by Jacobus de Voragine and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-22 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depicting the lives of the saints in an array of factual and fictional stories, The Golden Legend was perhaps the most widely read book, after the Bible, during the late Middle Ages. It was compiled around 1260 by Jacobus de Voragine, a scholarly friar and later archbishop of Genoa, whose purpose was to captivate, encourage, and edify the faithful, while preserving a vast store of information pertaining to the legends and traditions of the church. In this translation, the first in English of the complete text, William Granger Ryan captures the immediacy of this rich work, which offers an important guide for readers interested in medieval art and literature and, more generally, in popular religious culture. Arranged according to the order of saints' feast days, these fascinating stories are now combined into one volume. This edition also features an introduction by Eamon Duffy contextualizing the work.
