Book excerpt: Hey, tough guys! I have been nursing cows longer than you been playing cards, and every one of them cows, have better manners than you do on your best day, and Ive also been a sheriff and every one of them bad ones had better manners than you do right now. The card shark pushed his chair back with a jump, his fingers just an inch away from his shell belt gun. Kens lips curled, showing his teeth, and Ken said, Mister, Ive been lifting cows and calfs for a living most of my life, you dont frighten me in the least, Ive stared down cows and bears, and when I was a sheriff, I stared down the wrong end of a barrel of a gun a time or two, all you have is a plum loco way of looking at things. Lets face it, you just dont look good and your stink is worse. Alasdair said, Gie him a skelpit lug, oh, I forgot, give him a slap on the ear. Ken thought the card shark looked like a rattler had been thrown on the table between us. Then the card shark said, Stand up, Im callin you out, Ill shoot you down like a dog that you are. Ken stood up and faced the card shark. The card sharks hand twitched, Kens hand blurred in movement, and magically, the .45 appeared in Kens hand. There was one loud roar, and the shining .45 bucked in Kens hand, a bluish-colored and acrid smell of gun smoke filled the air. The card sharks legs buckled and gave way. He crumpled to the floor with a bullet hole between his eyes. The bullet hole was a perfect triangle with that third eye Ken had just made.

Download or read book Trace Metal Biogeochemistry and Ecology of Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vent Systems written by Liudmila L. Demina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume synthesizes the relevant data that is fundamental to our understanding of trace metal biogeochemistry and the ecology of biological communities of deep-sea vent systems. It presents the combined results of biological and geochemical research and analyzes the microdistribution of animals and the spatial structure of vent communities. Careful consideration is given to the export of iron and other trace metals from hydrothermal vents. The environmental conditions to be found in deep-sea hydrothermal community habitats, along with the trace metal behavior in biotope water are characterized and the sources and forms of trace metals taken up by dominant hydrothermal vent animals are discussed. Special attention is paid to the poorly investigated deep biosphere of the sub-seafloor igneous crust. The book is illustrated with a wealth of exceptional deep-sea photos taken by the manned submersible “Mir”, and a dedicated chapter focuses on the role of deep manned submersibles in ocean research. The book will be of interest to researchers and students in the fields of oceanography, geochemistry, biology, the environmental sciences and marine ecology.

Download or read book The Ecology of Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents written by Cindy Lee Van Dover and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teeming with weird and wonderful life--giant clams and mussels, tubeworms, "eyeless" shrimp, and bacteria that survive on sulfur--deep-sea hot-water springs are found along rifts where sea-floor spreading occurs. The theory of plate tectonics predicted the existence of these hydrothermal vents, but they were discovered only in 1977. Since then the sites have attracted teams of scientists seeking to understand how life can thrive in what would seem to be intolerable or extreme conditions of temperature and fluid chemistry. Some suspect that these vents even hold the key to understanding the very origins of life. Here a leading expert provides the first authoritative and comprehensive account of this research in a book intended for students, professionals, and general readers. Cindy Lee Van Dover, an ecologist, brings nearly two decades of experience and a lively writing style to the text, which is further enhanced by two hundred illustrations, including photographs of vent communities taken in situ. The book begins by explaining what is known about hydrothermal systems in terms of their deep-sea environment and their geological and chemical makeup. The coverage of microbial ecology includes a chapter on symbiosis. Symbiotic relationships are further developed in a section on physiological ecology, which includes discussions of adaptations to sulfide, thermal tolerances, and sensory adaptations. Separate chapters are devoted to trophic relationships and reproductive ecology. A chapter on community dynamics reveals what has been learned about the ways in which vent communities become established and why they persist, while a chapter on evolution and biogeography examines patterns of species diversity and evolutionary relationships within chemosynthetic ecosystems. Cognate communities such as seeps and whale skeletons come under scrutiny for their ability to support microbial and invertebrate communities that are ecologically and evolutionarily related to hydrothermal faunas. The book concludes by exploring the possibility that life originated at hydrothermal vents, a hypothesis that has had tremendous impact on our ideas about the potential for life on other planets or planetary bodies in our solar system.

Download or read book The Excavation of the Prehistoric Burial Tumulus at Lofkend Albania written by Lorenc Bejko and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burial tumulus of Lofkend lies in one of the richest archaeological areas of Albania (ancient "Illyria"), home to a number of burial tumuli spanning the Bronze and Iron Ages of later prehistory. Some were robbed long ago, others were reused for modern burials; few were excavated under scientific conditions. Modern understanding of the pre- and protohistory of Illyria has largely been shaped by the contents of such burial mounds. What inspired the systematic exploration of Lofkend by UCLA was more than the promise of an unplundered necropolis; it was also a chance to revisit the significance of this tumulus and its fellows for the emergence of urbanism and complexity in ancient Illyria. In addition to artifacts, the recovery of surviving plant remains, bones, and other organic material contribute insights into the environmental and ecological history of the region.
