Download or read book Bright Bright Day written by Stephen Gill and published by White Space Gallery Limited/The Tarkovsky Foundation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a lavishly produced book of previously unseen photographs by the legendary Russian filmmaker Andrey Tarkovsky (1932-1986). The focus of the book is an array of mostly hitherto unseen polaroids from the Florence-based Tarkovsky Foundation, which is maintained by the filmmaker's son Arseniy Tarkovsky. Taken in Russia and Italy between 1979 and 1984, the photographs range from romantic landscapes and studied portraits to private shots of the auteur's family and friends, including the distinguished scriptwriter Tonino Guerra. They demonstrate the singular compositional and visual-poetic ability of this master image-maker. Many of the polaroids created in Russia complement and extend the personal imagery of the film Mirror (1974). Equally rewarding cross-fertilization is apparent in the images that were taken in Italy while he was travelling with Tonino Guerra and preparing Nostalgia (1983).

This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I would go into the deeps a hundred times to cheer a downcast spirit; it is good for me to have been afflicted that I might know how to speak a word in season to one that is weary." --Charles Spurgeon Millions read the words of the great nineteenth-century preacher Charles Spurgeon without knowing that his ministry succeeded during seasons of overwhelming emotional pain. Bright Days, Dark Nights offers a first look for many at the deep depression this great man of God encountered. Spurgeon confronted emotional problems with an acceptance based on physical, emotional, and spiritual causes and cures. Drawing from Spurgeon's enormous collection of sermons and conversations, author and therapist Elizabeth Skoglund provides insight into subjects such as confidence, depression, and anxiety. Readers will find strength and comfort for themselves and others in this unique blending of biblical principles and psychological wholeness.

Will Oldham has to say whether he would rather one thing, or another. Many topics are covered, including music, sex, cuisine, literature and travel. Some people believe that the Would You Rather format is better suited to a long car journey than a pamphlet, but we disagree. It works just fine on the page. More than that, it's very interesting and occasionally profound.

Book Bright Day Valancourt 20th Century Classics

Download or read book Bright Day Valancourt 20th Century Classics written by J B Priestley and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregory Dawson, a middle-aged and disillusioned writer, is holed up in a Cornish hotel working on a film script he must finish. A chance encounter with an old acquaintance in the bar sends him back to the England of 1913, when he was just eighteen and longed to enter the seemingly magical world of the glamorous Alington family and its three lovely daughters. Replaying the events of those days in his mind, Dawson relives a long-forgotten story that ended with a mysterious tragedy whose effects linger on in the present and threaten to shatter his placid existence ... In the vein of Proust's In Search of Lost Time, J. B. Priestley's Bright Day (1946) is one of his finest works and his own favorite of his novels, a haunting and unforgettable evocation of a vanished England as yet unravaged by the devastation of two world wars. "One of the best of J. B. Priestley's novels . . . provides an opportunity to revalue a writer not merely hugely popular in his own day but also, with more than 100 titles to his credit, hugely prolific." - Francis King, The Spectator "A glow of the magic of poignant rediscovery." - Kirkus Reviews "I do not think Priestley has ever written anything better than this book." - News Chronicle

In 1931 England, Astra Davies defies all the conventions. Clever, witty, and determined, Astra smokes, drinks, plays a mean piano, and gallivants around London with her beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. But Astra finds herself in a tight spot when her parents die suddenly, leaving her with a raft of debts. With few marketable skills and a closet full of family secrets, Astra has two choices: find a rich husband or make her own way. A fiercely driven woman like Astra is not about to cast her lot in with a man, especially out of desperation. And since the only man she fancies--Jeremy Harris, the Earl of Dunreaven--is as hard up as she is, her way forward is clear. But the path to independence is a bumpy one fraught with hazards and heartbreaking choices. A blackmailing socialite threatens to derail Astra's reputation. A brainless business partner just might drive her even further into debt. And a series of bruising scandals dogs her every step of the way. From the bustle of London to the country estates of the aristocracy, Astra embarks on a journey that tests her brains, wit, and mettle as never before. But one way or another, Astra Davies is dead set on proving she's no ordinary Bright Young Thing.

Book One Bright Moon

Download or read book One Bright Moon written by Andrew Kwong and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 Michael Crouch Award, debut category of the National Biography Award: From famine to freedom, how a young boy fled Chairman Mao's China to a new life in Australia Andrew Kwong was only seven when he witnessed his first execution. The grim scene left him sleepless, anxious and doubtful about his commitment as a revolutionary in Mao's New China. Yet he knew if he devoted himself to the Party and its Chairman he would be saved. That's what his teacher told him. Months later, it was his own father on trial. This time the sentence was banishment to a re-education camp, not death. It left the family tainted, despised, and with few means of survival during the terrible years of persecution and famine known as the Great Leap Forward. Even after his father returned, things remained desperate. Escape seemed the only solution, and it would be twelve-year-old Andrew who undertook the perilous journey first. This is the poignant, resonant story of a young boy's awakening – to survival, education, fulfilment, and eventually to a new life of freedom. PRAISE 'An incredibly powerful book' Benjamin Law '[A] moving family saga, shot through with yearning and hard-won joy' Fiona Capp, Sydney Morning Herald 'This book will live on in your heart long after you've read the last page' Vicki Laveau-Harvie, author of The Erratics 'Heart-breaking, honest, personal, Andrew Kwong's moving journey from oppression to freedom is inspiring' Susanne Gervay, OAM, author 'A work of startling clarity ... reminiscent of Angela's Ashes' South China Morning Post Magazine 'Deeply moving ... The unique perspective of a child ... places One Bright Moon in the vicinity of Night, Elie Wiesel's pathbreaking memoir of his early life prior to and of his time in German concentration camps' Meenakshi Bharat, IIC Quarterly 'A few pages into this compelling memoir proves it was written by a master storyteller' Sharon Rundle, Australian Book Review 'A profoundly moving and spellbinding story that perfectly illuminates the terror of the times and the irrepressible yearning for something better' Carol Major, author and writing mentor 'One Bright Moon is extraordinary writing that encapsulates long-term hunger as a background feature of daily life in Mao's New China. In the foreground are images of adults and children populating the world of the pre-teenage boy with a photographic memory who would later write of them. The book is rich archival material for the study of China's social history' Mabel Lee, PhD FAHA, writer and translator 'Reading this memoir is a healing experience' Devika Brendon, author and editor
