Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wavelets are spatially localized functions whose amplitude drops off exponentially outside a small "window". They are used to magnify experimental or numerical data and have become powerful tools in signal processing and other computational sciences. This book gives scientists and engineers a practical understanding of wavelets--their origins, their purpose, their use, and their prospects. It covers the applications of wavelets as a diagnostic tool and the use of wavelet basis functions to solve differential equations. Each chapter was written by one of five lecturers of a course sponsored by the Institute of Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center. Not only does this book treat the latest advances on the subject, but it also attempts to impart practical knowledge to allow scientists and engineers to evaluate objectively where these tools stand in relation to their needs.

This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of Fourier Analysis and Applications is a journal of the mathematical sciences devoted to Fourier analysis and its applications. The subject of Fourier analysis has had a major impact on the development of mathematics, on the understanding of many engineering and scientific phenomena, and on the solution of some of the most important problems in mathematics and the sciences. At the end of June 1993, a large Conference in Harmonic Analysis was held at the University of Paris-Sud at Orsay to celebrate the prominent role played by Jean-Pierre Kahane and his numerous achievements in this field. The large variety of topics discussed in this meeting, ranging from classical Harmonic Analysis to Probability Theory, reflects the intense mathematical curiosity and the broad mathematical interest of Jean-Pierre Kahane. Indeed, all of them are connected to his work. The mornings were devoted to plenary addresses while up to four parallel sessions took place in the afternoons. Altogether, there were about eighty speakers. This wide range of subjects appears in these proceedings which include thirty six articles.

Download or read book Wavelets written by Stephane Jaffard and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-awaited update of Meyer's Wavelets: Algorithms and Applications includes completely new chapters on four topics: wavelets and the study of turbulence, wavelets and fractals (which includes an analysis of Riemann's nondifferentiable function), data compression, and wavelets in astronomy. The chapter on data compression was the original motivation for this revised edition, and it contains up-to-date information on the interplay between wavelets and nonlinear approximation. The other chapters have been rewritten with comments, references, historical notes, and new material. Four appendices have been added: a primer on filters, key results (with proofs) about the wavelet transform, a complete discussion of a counterexample to the Marr-Mallat conjecture on zero-crossings, and a brief introduction to H?lder and Besov spaces. In addition, all of the figures have been redrawn, and the references have been expanded to a comprehensive list of over 260 entries. The book includes several new results that have not appeared elsewhere.

Book Wavelets

Download or read book Wavelets written by Jean-Michel Combes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last two subjects mentioned in the title "Wavelets" are so well established that they do not need any explanations. The first is related to them, but a short introduction is appropriate since the concept of wavelets emerged fairly recently. Roughly speaking, a wavelet decomposition is an expansion of an arbitrary function into smooth localized contributions labeled by a scale and a position pa rameter. Many of the ideas and techniques related to such expansions have existed for a long time and are widely used in mathematical analysis, theoretical physics and engineering. However, the rate of progress increased significantly when it was realized that these ideas could give rise to straightforward calculational methods applicable to different fields. The interdisciplinary structure (R.c.P. "Ondelettes") of the C.N .R.S. and help from the Societe Nationale Elf-Aquitaine greatly fostered these developments. This conference was held at the Centre National de Rencontres Mathematiques (C.I.R.M) in Marseille from December 14 to 18, 1987 and brought together an interdisciplinary mix of participants. We hope that these proceedings will convey to the reader some of the excitement and flavor of the meeting.

Book Different Perspectives on Wavelets

Download or read book Different Perspectives on Wavelets written by Ingrid Daubechies and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wavelet transform can be seen as a synthesis of ideas that have emerged since the 1960s in mathematics, physics, and electrical engineering. The basic idea is to use a family of ``building blocks'' to represent in an efficient way the object at hand, be it a function, an operator, a signal, or an image. The building blocks themselves come in different ``sizes'' which can describe different features with different resolutions. The papers in this book attempt to give some theoretical and technical shape to this intuitive picture of wavelets and their uses. The papers collected here were prepared for an AMS Short Course on Wavelets and Applications, held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio in January 1993. Here readers will find general background on wavelets as well as more detailed views of specific techniques and applications. With contributions by some of the top experts in the field, this book provides an excellent introduction to this important and growing area of research.

Book Approximation Theory Spline Functions and Applications

Download or read book Approximation Theory Spline Functions and Applications written by S.P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Approximation Theory, Spline Functions and Applications held in the Hotel villa del Mare, Maratea, Italy between April 28,1991 and May 9, 1991. The principal aim of the Advanced Study Institute, as reflected in these Proceedings, was to bring together recent and up-to-date developments of the subject, and to give directions for future research. Amongst the main topics covered during this Advanced Study Institute is the subject of uni variate and multivariate wavelet decomposition over spline spaces. This is a relatively new area in approximation theory and an increasingly impor tant subject. The work involves key techniques in approximation theory cardinal splines, B-splines, Euler-Frobenius polynomials, spline spaces with non-uniform knot sequences. A number of scientific applications are also highlighted, most notably applications to signal processing and digital im age processing. Developments in the area of approximation of functions examined in the course of our discussions include approximation of periodic phenomena over irregular node distributions, scattered data interpolation, Pade approximants in one and several variables, approximation properties of weighted Chebyshev polynomials, minimax approximations, and the Strang Fix conditions and their relation to radial functions. I express my sincere thanks to the members of the Advisory Commit tee, Professors B. Beauzamy, E. W. Cheney, J. Meinguet, D. Roux, and G. M. Phillips. My sincere appreciation and thanks go to A. Carbone, E. DePas cale, R. Charron, and B.

Book A First Course on Wavelets

Download or read book A First Course on Wavelets written by Eugenio Hernandez and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-09-12 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wavelet theory had its origin in quantum field theory, signal analysis, and function space theory. In these areas wavelet-like algorithms replace the classical Fourier-type expansion of a function. This unique new book is an excellent introduction to the basic properties of wavelets, from background math to powerful applications. The authors provide elementary methods for constructing wavelets, and illustrate several new classes of wavelets. The text begins with a description of local sine and cosine bases that have been shown to be very effective in applications. Very little mathematical background is needed to follow this material. A complete treatment of band-limited wavelets follows. These are characterized by some elementary equations, allowing the authors to introduce many new wavelets. Next, the idea of multiresolution analysis (MRA) is developed, and the authors include simplified presentations of previous studies, particularly for compactly supported wavelets. Some of the topics treated include: Several bases generated by a single function via translations and dilations Multiresolution analysis, compactly supported wavelets, and spline wavelets Band-limited wavelets Unconditionality of wavelet bases Characterizations of many of the principal objects in the theory of wavelets, such as low-pass filters and scaling functions The authors also present the basic philosophy that all orthonormal wavelets are completely characterized by two simple equations, and that most properties and constructions of wavelets can be developed using these two equations. Material related to applications is provided, and constructions of splines wavelets are presented. Mathematicians, engineers, physicists, and anyone with a mathematical background will find this to be an important text for furthering their studies on wavelets.

Book Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems written by Robert A. Meyers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 1885 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an authoritative reference to the basic tools and concepts of complexity, systems theory, and dynamical systems from the perspective of pure and applied mathematics. Complex systems are systems that comprise many interacting parts with the ability to generate a new quality of collective behavior through self-organization, e.g. the spontaneous formation of temporal, spatial or functional structures. These systems are often characterized by extreme sensitivity to initial conditions as well as emergent behavior that are not readily predictable or even completely deterministic. The more than 100 entries in this wide-ranging, single source work provide a comprehensive explication of the theory and applications of mathematical complexity, covering ergodic theory, fractals and multifractals, dynamical systems, perturbation theory, solitons, systems and control theory, and related topics. Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an essential reference for all those interested in mathematical complexity, from undergraduate and graduate students up through professional researchers.

Book Wavelets and Singular Integrals on Curves and Surfaces

Download or read book Wavelets and Singular Integrals on Curves and Surfaces written by Guy David and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wavelets are a recently developed tool for the analysis and synthesis of functions; their simplicity, versatility and precision makes them valuable in many branches of applied mathematics. The book begins with an introduction to the theory of wavelets and limits itself to the detailed construction of various orthonormal bases of wavelets. A second part centers on a criterion for the L2-boundedness of singular integral operators: the T(b)-theorem. It contains a full proof of that theorem. It contains a full proof of that theorem, and a few of the most striking applications (mostly to the Cauchy integral). The third part is a survey of recent attempts to understand the geometry of subsets of Rn on which analogues of the Cauchy kernel define bounded operators. The book was conceived for a graduate student, or researcher, with a primary interest in analysis (and preferably some knowledge of harmonic analysis and seeking an understanding of some of the new "real-variable methods" used in harmonic analysis.

Book Variational Methods in Image Segmentation

Download or read book Variational Methods in Image Segmentation written by Jean-Michel Morel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains both a synthesis and mathematical analysis of a wide set of algorithms and theories whose aim is the automatic segmen tation of digital images as well as the understanding of visual perception. A common formalism for these theories and algorithms is obtained in a variational form. Thank to this formalization, mathematical questions about the soundness of algorithms can be raised and answered. Perception theory has to deal with the complex interaction between regions and "edges" (or boundaries) in an image: in the variational seg mentation energies, "edge" terms compete with "region" terms in a way which is supposed to impose regularity on both regions and boundaries. This fact was an experimental guess in perception phenomenology and computer vision until it was proposed as a mathematical conjecture by Mumford and Shah. The third part of the book presents a unified presentation of the evi dences in favour of the conjecture. It is proved that the competition of one-dimensional and two-dimensional energy terms in a variational for mulation cannot create fractal-like behaviour for the edges. The proof of regularity for the edges of a segmentation constantly involves con cepts from geometric measure theory, which proves to be central in im age processing theory. The second part of the book provides a fast and self-contained presentation of the classical theory of rectifiable sets (the "edges") and unrectifiable sets ("fractals").
