Download or read book Prisoners of Time written by United States. National Education Commission on Time and Learning and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Education Council Act of 1991 established the National Education Commission on Time and Learning as an independent advisory body and called for a comprehensive review of the relationship between time and learning in U.S. schools. This document serves as a supplementary volume to the commission's first report released in May 1994, which found that most school-reform designs are structurally flawed by their adherence to a traditional school calendar. This volume describes innovative approaches to the use of school time. It provides nearly 40 examples of exemplary efforts to make better use of available time and extend the amount of time students spend learning. The brief program descriptions are from 15 elementary schools, 15 middle and senior high schools, 4 districtwide efforts, and 6 special programs. They include public and private schools in rural, urban, and suburban areas from 26 states. Information for reaching contact persons is provided. A review of the programs indicates that many different kinds of schools and districts have already implemented many of the commission's recommendations. The most common approaches in descending order include: (1) redesigning available time; (2) employing technology; (3) extending the school day or year; (4) providing time for professional development; and (5) providing support services for children or families. Finally, the approaches to the redesign of time usage differ by school level. (LMI)

Book Outlaw Ballplayers

Download or read book Outlaw Ballplayers written by R.G. (Hank) Utley and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-08-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The players of the independent Carolina League were outlaws. A diverse lot that included preachers and ex-cons, with many former and future Major Leaguers, they played ball during the desperate years of the Great Depression, when half of organized professional baseball's minor leagues went broke and ceased operations. Despite the number of defaulting leagues and teams, the players were held to their prior contracts, and many found themselves unemployed, unable to play without violating the reserve clause that bound them to their previous club. The threat of being blackballed by organized baseball notwithstanding, hundreds of players went to bat for the independent Carolina League, and their stories offer unique glimpses into the pastime's--and America's--most difficult years. This follow-up to the immensely popular and award-winning The Independent Carolina Baseball League, 1936-1938 (McFarland, 1999) takes the story of outlaw baseball into extra innings, offering a wealth of previously unpublished interviews with the key players and personnel associated with the league. With outstanding coverage of nearly 20 players, including the notorious Edwin Collins "Alabama" Pitts and well-known Lawrence Columbus "Crash" Davis, this book also offers the unique perspectives of umpires, journalists and players' wives. Appendices include a Pitts family history, the Kannapolis Towelers team record book, player records, and the history of the Carolina Victory League.

Book excerpt: Adopted as a child from the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, Tommy Malboeuf grew up in Troutman, North Carolina before enlisting in the Navy in the early 1950s. After his military service, Tommy found occasional work surveying and operating heavy equipment, and he also found a personal passion in bluegrass fiddling. He performed and recorded with A.L. Wood and the Smokey Ridge Boys, Roy McMillan's High Country Boys, the Border Mountain Boys, L.W. Lambert and the Blue River Boys, C.E. Ward and his band, Garland Shuping, and Wild Country, among others. In the late 1990s, Tommy began teaching fiddle, maintaining a steady stream of students until at least the early 2000s. He continued to perform as a fiddler, filling in for a variety of local bands and recording cuts on records for bands such as Big Country Bluegrass. This text documents Tommy's life, from his humble beginnings to his lengthy fiddle career. Contextualizing Tommy's work within the Statesville-Troutman bluegrass "scene," chapters also explore the local bluegrass culture of the time. Tommy's extensive repertoire is also listed, including his spectacular fiddle contest wins, band recordings, local jam field recordings, and songs recorded for students, all of which highlight his talent and expertise as a fiddler.

Book The Best of Dreamcatcher Journeys

Download or read book The Best of Dreamcatcher Journeys written by Beverly Lane Lorenz and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our minds and hearts often exploded with joy as we became immersed in the scenes. At times, we were one with the mystical silence and landscape. "Suddenly, we started climbing and climbing until I felt we couldn't go higher. GERONIMO! I cried yet still we climbed. The road became so narrow and steep that I began to think we might begin to go backward. We down-shifted again. When we crossed Ten Sleep Creek, I peered out my window looking for snow pack. It was summer. Still we climbed, higher and higher. The clouds became bigger-and closer. The blue, bright sky blue...and rich forest green encompassed us. Had we passed over? Were we on the other side? Dreamcatcher downshifted and climbed some more. Dear Lord, if my ears hadn't popped earlier, I would have listened for the choir of angel voices. We passed through Big Horn, Sitting Bull, and climbed higher. The air got thinner, the water became purer, the sun brighter. Still we climbed. There were no people. There was no pollution. There was no barrier between us and God. We climbed higher. The road narrowed. The blue faded into grey. We were in the clouds and heaven bound."
