Book excerpt: "This is a knockabout satiric tale of three on-the-skids vaudeville troupers -- Jerry, Mae, and George -- who decide to head for Hollywood and try their luck at the newest craze: "talkies." After a hilarious series of consistent blunders, the unassuming George is carried to fame and fortune becoming (for a short time, at least) a captain of The Industry. This fast-paced, wild romp offers marvelous character opportunities, while spoofing the absurdities of Tinsel Town. "--Publisher's website.

Book Once in a Lifetime

Download or read book Once in a Lifetime written by Elise Varner Winter and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once in a Lifetime reveals the broad range of Elise Varner Winter's activities as first lady of Mississippi during the term of her husband, Governor William F. Winter (1980–1984). Drawn from her personal journal, which she kept daily, this account includes the frustrating moments as well as the exhilarating ones, from keeping house to visiting the White House. The position of a state's first lady is one of the most public of roles. Yet few people know what a first lady actually does. In Elise Winter's memoir, her sense of history, her talent, and her perseverance to record her activities and observations provide a unique opportunity for the reader to understand what life in the Mississippi Governor's Mansion was really like on a daily basis. This book reveals her traditional roles—planner of elegant dinners, sophisticated hostess, hands-on gardener, and steward of the Mansion and its historic collection of antique furniture and decorative arts. But she emerged as a modern first lady, intensely interested in public education and in the state penitentiary, for which she developed several important initiatives. She recounts fascinating events from Governor Winter's administration, its tensions and its accomplishments, such as passage of the Education Reform Act, a success in which Elise Winter played an indispensable role. Many of the issues of thirty years ago remain critical today—insufficient funding for education, budget deficits, prison overcrowding, and the need for prison reform. Elise Winter observes everyone and everything with a fresh eye for detail and describes them all with honesty, clarity, and simplicity. Her observations reflect her intellect and insight, as well as her sense of humor. This is a woman's story, a human story, about hopes and doubts, about setting high standards and sometimes feeling inadequate, and about the imperative of continual efforts to make her state a better place for all who live there.

Book Once in a Lifetime the Incredible Story of the New York Cosmos

Download or read book Once in a Lifetime the Incredible Story of the New York Cosmos written by Gavin Newsham and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “compelling . . . detailed and thoughtful account” of the rise and fall of the Cosmos, New York’s first superstar soccer team (Kirkus Reviews). In the summer of 1977, soccer was poised to finally conquer America and the New York Cosmos were the premier sports team of the city. They boasted the greatest roster of the world’s best players—notably, Brazil’s international sensation Pelé—ever assembled for any sport. For a time, they were the darlings of the press. Their first game was televised in twenty-two different countries. They were favorites at Studio 54. They partied behind the velvet ropes with Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger. Less a growing sports phenom than a pop-culture happening, the hottest ticket in town drew the likes of Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Henry Kissinger, and Robert Redford. Warner Brothers chairman and Cosmos owner Steve Ross may not have known a goalkeeper from a zookeeper, but in a city awash in celebrity and decadence, Ross knew spectacle. He also knew how to make a dollar, and stars. But as the Cosmos players soon became enmeshed in a world of millionaires, gangsters, groupies, glamour, power struggles, alcoholic excess, drugs, disco and very public fistfights, they were set for a heartbreaking and inevitable fall. “Colorful and keen . . . [and] detail-rich, this unlikely drama of a quintessentially American flirtation” (Publishers Weekly), “is a gripping evocation of a glorious but brief moment when the beautiful game had the US entranced” (Time Out London).

Book excerpt: Sweetbitter meets Bridget Jones in a John Hughes movie, Once in a Lifetime plays against a vibrant 1980s background of everything from slam dancers and rubber jelly shoes to social anarchy and AIDS. “I’ve waited long enough for my life to happen. I want to be neck-deep in something that keeps me up all night. Something so cool I’ll be petrified and sick to my stomach at the mere thought of it. I want to absolutely fry in inspiration, then capture it in oils and charcoals and bits of broken glass, in a piece of art that oozes magic and fear and possibility. I want to find a city. An adventure. A song. Something. To hell with the American Dream. I want a reason to kick and scream.” ― Jessica Addentro, 1980s waitress, artist, and aspiring multimedia sensation In 1984, punk is rampant. Andy Warhol rules. And 20-year-old art student Jessica is sick of all the excitement going on without her. Hungry for the life she’s convinced is just beyond her fingertips, she sets her sights on an avant-garde study abroad program in London she can’t afford. Meanwhile, hometown boyfriend Drew wants to see other people if he’s not exciting enough to keep her stateside. Jess and her buddies rent a beat-up apartment, trolling new wave clubs and waitressing double shifts in New Hope, PA, a cool and artsy restaurant town on the river, to scrounge-up tuition money. Then Jess meets Whit, a steamy daredevil guitarist who crawls through her window and makes her head spin like a record. The girls deal with cheating waiters, mystics, a military drag queen buddy, a Svengali bouncer, and the specter of AIDs. Before long, Jess has to decide if the men in her life will leave her as damaged as her cracked-glass mosaic art projects—and whether they’ll stand in the way of her dream semester in post-punk London.

Book Privatizing the Polity

Download or read book Privatizing the Polity written by Holona LeAnne Ochs and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents evidence that the expansion of welfare privatization makes it harder for people to move out of poverty in large numbers. Research on poverty and research on governance currently exist as largely disparate literatures without a framework for building knowledge regarding how policies and practices compare as poverty alleviation strategies. In Privatizing the Polity, Holona LeAnne Ochs examines the evolution of the governance of welfare programs across the United States. Throughout the political spectrum the trend in recent decades has been towards welfare privatization, shifting the boundaries of poverty governance from public to private actors—whether they are foundations or social entrepreneurs—whose interests in poverty governance are more obscure. The analysis of more than eighteen years of data suggests that strategies of devolution and privatization make it more difficult for people to move out of poverty. At the same time the framework for understanding the governance structures, enactment practices, and social wealth leverage presented in Privatizing the Polity offers numerous opportunities for acquiring a deeper understanding of assumptions formerly taken for granted and redirecting the system to enhance poverty alleviation.

Book excerpt: "He's a legend of The Great White Way whose very name is synonymous with the Golden Age of Broadway: Moss Hart. In Moss Hart: A Prince of the Theater, biographer Jared Brown offers a meticulously researched, sensitive look at the life and work of a major American artist." "More than just an assessment of Hart's career, this is a personal portrait as well. Despite his enormous success in both theatre and film, Hart spent all of his adult life in psychoanalysis, attempting to come to grips with a crushing depression. He was rumored to be bisexual, and this book examines the evidence for that claim. When he married, in his forties, he and his wife, the actress-singer Kitty Carlisle, were said by Hart's friend and collaborator Alan Jay Lerner to be "not only an ideal couple, [but] the ideal couple."" "This is the first biography to be written with the full cooperation of Hart's family and friends. Author Jared Brown had access to documents (such as Hart's diary) previously unavailable to biographers, and conducted lengthy interviews with Hart's wife and children, as well as with some of the most prominent performers he worked with, such as Julie Andrews, Gregory Peck, Eddie Albert, and Roubert Goulet. This long-awaited biography, featuring dozens of never-before-published photographs, is truly the definitive picture of an extraordinary man and a theatrical giant."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Presence of a Chaplain

Download or read book The Presence of a Chaplain written by Dr. Barbara Thomas-Reddick and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-07-25 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand the purpose, the mission, and the relevance of this research titled The Presence of a Chaplain, I believe sharing my life story will give the reader in-depth insight and demonstrate the importance of including chaplains on multi-interdisciplinary teams. This writer believes that if chaplaincy is considered to be included in diverse systems, the student, parent/guardian, would benefit holistically, and the chaplains presence along would make a difference in the public and private schools, particularly but not limited to, when our children are challenged with depression, bullying, suicidal, and low self-esteem. When a chaplain is present to provide the listening ear, our children would have an outlet to share their concerns, thoughts, and problems to a credentialed, qualified, and trained chaplain. Chaplains are trained to remain available and journey wherever the child or individual maybe, reaching them with the holistic plan of care; mind, body, and soul. Being ever so mindful, to recognize when it is time to transition and pass the baton by making referrals when the matter is out of your scope of practice.
