Book Early Narratives of the Northwest 1634 1699

Download or read book Early Narratives of the Northwest 1634 1699 written by Louise Phelps Kellogg and published by . This book was released on 1917 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of a State, or a county, writes author J. B. Alexander, "is almost entirely the history of the people who constitute the inhabitants." Indeed, Alexander devotes a substantial portion of his History of Mecklenburg County from 1740 to 1900 to biographical sketches of former citizens of the county, often giving such information as date and place of birth, parents' names, date of arrival in Mecklenburg County, education, profession, military service, and names of spouse and children. Many of these Mecklenburg residents descended from the Scotch-Irish immigrants who populated the early settlements of the county, which was formed in 1762 and originally encompassed a large area that included what is now Union, Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland, and Rutherford counties, as well as the upper portions of present-day South Carolina. Later waves of immigration brought settlers from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Germany, and Ireland to the area.

Book excerpt: An absorbing and comprehensive survey, The Eagle Returns: The Legal History of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians shows a group bound by kinship, geography, and language, struggling to reestablish their right to self-governance. Hailing from northwest Lower Michigan, the Grand Traverse Band has become a well-known national leader in advancing Indian treaty rights, gaming, and land rights, while simultaneously creating and developing a nationally honored indigenous tribal justice system. This book will serve as a valuable reference for policymakers, lawyers, and Indian people who want to explore how federal Indian law and policy drove an Anishinaabe community to the brink of legal extinction, how non-Indian economic and political interests conspired to eradicate the community’s self-sufficiency, and how Indian people fought to preserve their culture, laws, traditions, governance, and language.

Book The Catholic Calumet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tracy Neal Leavelle
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2011-11-29
  • ISBN : 0812207041
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book The Catholic Calumet written by Tracy Neal Leavelle and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-11-29 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1730 a delegation of Illinois Indians arrived in the French colonial capital of New Orleans. An Illinois leader presented two ceremonial pipes, or calumets, to the governor. One calumet represented the diplomatic alliance between the two men and the other symbolized their shared attachment to Catholicism. The priest who documented this exchange also reported with excitement how the Illinois recited prayers and sang hymns in their Native language, a display that astonished the residents of New Orleans. The "Catholic" calumet and the Native-language prayers and hymns were the product of long encounters between the Illinois and Jesuit missionaries, men who were themselves transformed by these sometimes intense spiritual experiences. The conversions of people, communities, and cultural practices that led to this dramatic episode all occurred in a rapidly evolving and always contested colonial context. In The Catholic Calumet, historian Tracy Neal Leavelle examines interactions between Jesuits and Algonquian-speaking peoples of the upper Great Lakes and Illinois country, including the Illinois and Ottawas, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Leavelle abandons singular definitions of conversion that depend on the idealized elevation of colonial subjects from "savages" to "Christians" for more dynamic concepts that explain the changes that all participants experienced. A series of thematic chapters on topics such as myth and historical memory, understandings of human nature, the creation of colonial landscapes, translation of religious texts into Native languages, and the influence of gender and generational differences demonstrates that these encounters resulted in the emergence of complicated and unstable cross-cultural religious practices that opened new spaces for cultural creativity and mutual adaptation.

Book Working for Wildlife

Download or read book Working for Wildlife written by Ross Galbreath and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " ... Describes the development of wildlife administration and management in New Zealand which led to this combination of functions in the Wildlife Service, and the changes in attitudes towards wildlife and conservation which eventually in 1987 brought about its replacement. Against this background of shifting ideas and policies, "Working for wildlife" also presents the exploits and achievements of the dedicated band of Wildlife officers. They were pre-eminently people of action rather than bureaucratic administrators: fisheries technicians wading in chilly streams to record and measure migrating trout; fauna conservation field officers and scientists searching for the last of the kakapo in the precipitous Fiordland country, or scaling the cliffs of Little Mangere Island to find ways to rescue the black robins ; deer-cullers in the hills fighting the "Deer Menace". They were the original good keen men; the exploits of those who worked for Wildlife will stir the pride of all New Zealanders."--Back cover.
