Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Two Fronts: Being the Adventures of an Indian Mule Corps in France and Gallipoli This book has been written during a long period of enforced idleness. It makes no claim either to literary or historical merit, but is a plain tale of personal experiences in the War. Having been written almost entirely from memory, assisted only by the briefest of diaries, I fear that it must inevitably contain some inaccuracies for which I ask indulgence. To those officers and men whose names appear, I apologise for the liberty I have taken, and sincerely trust that I have said nothing that may cause annoyance. Book India Empire and First World War Culture

Download or read book India Empire and First World War Culture written by Santanu Das and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on ten years of research, Santanu Das's India, Empire, and First World War Culture: Writings, Images, and Songs recovers the sensuous experience of combatants, non-combatants and civilians from undivided India in the 1914–1918 conflict and their socio-cultural, visual, and literary worlds. Around 1.5 million Indians were recruited, of whom over a million served abroad. Das draws on a variety of fresh, unusual sources - objects, images, rumours, streetpamphlets, letters, diaries, sound-recordings, folksongs, testimonies, poetry, essays, and fiction - to produce the first cultural and literary history, moving from recruitment tactics in villages through sepoy traces and feelings in battlefields, hospitals, and POW camps to post-war reflections on Europe and empire. Combining archival excavation in different countries across several continents with investigative readings of Gandhi, Kipling, Iqbal, Naidu, Nazrul, Tagore, and Anand, this imaginative study opens up the worlds of sepoys and labourers, men and women, nationalists, artists, and intellectuals, trying to make sense of home and the world in times of war.

Book Reconsidering Gallipoli

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jenny Macleod
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2004-09-04
  • ISBN : 9780719067433
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Reconsidering Gallipoli written by Jenny Macleod and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australia, Anzac Day, the anniversary of the first landings at Gallipoli, is one of the most important dates in the national calendar. Yet in Britain, the campaign is largely forgotten. The key to this contrast lies in the way in which the campaign's history has been recorded. To many Australians, the Anzac legend is a romantic war myth that proclaims the prowess of Australian participants in the campaign. It is an exercise in nation-building. In Britain, the campaign is also remembered in romantic terms, but the purpose here is to assuage the pain of defeat. Reconsidering Gallipoli broadens the debate over the cultural history of the First World War beyond the Western Front. The final chapter traces the influence of the early accounts on subsequent portrayals including Alan Moorehead's 1956 book, Bean's post 1965 rehabilitation, Peter Weir's 1981 film, and revisionist attacks on the legend.

Book The Great War and the British Empire

Download or read book The Great War and the British Empire written by Michael J.K. Walsh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1914 almost one quarter of the earth's surface was British. When the empire and its allies went to war in 1914 against the Central Powers, history's first global conflict was inevitable. It is the social and cultural reactions to that war and within those distant, often overlooked, societies which is the focus of this volume. From Singapore to Australia, Cyprus to Ireland, India to Iraq and around the rest of the British imperial world, further complexities and interlocking themes are addressed, offering new perspectives on imperial and colonial history and theory, as well as art, music, photography, propaganda, education, pacifism, gender, class, race and diplomacy at the end of the pax Britannica.

Book Colonial Soldiers in Europe 1914 1945

Download or read book Colonial Soldiers in Europe 1914 1945 written by Eric Storm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first half of the twentieth century, European countries witnessed the arrival of hundreds of thousands of colonial soldiers fighting in European territory (First and Second World War and Spanish Civil War) and coming into contact with European society and culture. For many Europeans, these were the first instances in which they met Asians or Africans, and the presence of Indian, Indo-Chinese, Moluccan, Senegalese, Moroccan or Algerian soldiers in Europe did not go unnoticed. This book explores this experience as it relates to the returning soldiers - who often had difficulties re-adapting to their subordinate status at home - and on European authorities who for the first time had to accommodate large numbers of foreigners in their own territories, which in some ways would help shape later immigration policies.
