Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailing the ways in which the Canadian government built on existing programs for veterans, Peter Neary identifies the key figures and events responsible for developing the orders and statutes that came to be known as the Veterans Charter, creating the Department of Veterans Affairs, and establishing sweeping new benefits for servicemen and women. Comparing rehabilitation programs after the Second World War with those after the First World War, Neary reveals the lasting importance of the country's new way of expressing its obligations to veterans. He shows that the measures developed to reintegrate them into civilian society became essential building blocks for the Canadian welfare state and helped pave the way for the unprecedented prosperity of the 1950s. A comprehensive study of a fundamental change in the relationship between government and citizens, On to Civvy Street is also a timely reminder of the debt the country owes its veterans.

Book excerpt: Being a member of the UK Military is often compared to being part of a large extended family where there is a sense of shared purpose, humour, discipline, comradeship and team spirit. Or at least that is what we were told when talking to military veterans about their resettlement experiences whilst gathering information for this book. But, sadly we were also told that when people leave the armed forces, there is also a feeling of being "fobbed off", of being "no use to society", of "not knowing where" they fit in and this in turn led to "real despair", "severe anxiety", "frustration" and "lack of identity". What an incredibly sad situation. We train people in techniques to support us in times of threat, crisis and war, when most of the population runs away from danger, these brave souls run into the danger. Yet, when their work is done, they feel they are entering into a society in which they no longer belong. We felt compelled to put together this guide to help UK military leavers to find help and support. People coming out of the military need help to do things that many of us take for granted. For example, registering for a GP, renting a home, buying a house and applying for jobs are just a few tasks that veterans are likely to find challenging. So, Signposts for Civvy Street provides some direction in offering suggestions for carrying out some of these tasks, and provides information of many agencies and charities that can offer specific and targeted help. We acknowledge that the military provides some information and support for military leavers, but we also understand that this is, at times disparate and difficult to access. Our hope is that this book helps veterans to understand some of the challenges, but also, offers suggestions for getting further advice and support.

Download or read book Civvy Street written by Clive Ward and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally written as a sitcom, Civvy Street is a story of success and failure, the haves and the have nots. Two veterans who once served together leave the military and go in two very different directions. Ex Sergeant Major Charles Fanshaw and Private Barry Gibson later meet again in Civvy street, that's when this crazy story begins. Barry Gibson or Baz as he likes to be called, left the army six years ago and had served in the same unit as Charles, but spent most of his twenty-two years in the stores, blanket stacking. Mad Elvis fan, Baz has been working for Charles for the last six months, after a drunken Charles took pity on him one night down the local British Legion, when he found out he was unemployed. That was one of Charles' weak spots, get him drunk and he'll promise you the world! Being in work for six months is a record for Baz, apart from being in the army. Baz likes to do as little as possible, if he can get away with it, "skive to survive" that's his motto. Charles Fanshaw had left the army with a pension and a healthy amount in his savings account. One day he met a man on the golf course who was selling his business due to retirement. The business was a toilet roll manufacturing company. For the first few years the business was doing well, then it started to fail around the same time he was reluctantly reunited with his soon to be nemesis, Barry Gibson.

Book Drop Zone Burma

Download or read book Drop Zone Burma written by Roger Annett and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air-dropped supplies were a vital part of the Allied campaign in Burma during World War II. The transportation of munitions, food and medical supplies was undertaken in the most difficult situations, both on the land where the air bases were often situated in remote tropical jungle terrain and in the air when hazardous flying conditions were met in the steamy airs above the carpet of forest treetops. This book is based upon the memories of nine veterans of the campaign: John Hart, an air-dispatcher with 194 Squadron; Peter Bray, a Dakota pilot with 31 Squadron; Arthur Watts, a fitter with both 31 and 194 Squadrons; Colin Lynch an Observer on 31 Squadron; Norman Currell, a Dakota pilot with 31 Squadron; George Hufflett, 1st Queen’s Infantry; Ken Brown, Royal Signals; Eric Knowles, the Buffs and Dame Vera Lynn who was with ENSA during the campaign. It describes how they arrived in Burma and their previous wartime experiences and then explains there parts in the famous actions such as The Defence of Arakan, The Sieges of Imphal and Kohima, the Allied Counterattack, the Advance to Mandalay and the Race to Rangoon. The author explains the background to this theater of war and then puts the veterans memories into context as the campaign progresses.

Book Prosthetic Agency

Download or read book Prosthetic Agency written by Gill Plain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prosthetic Agency: Literature, Culture and Masculinity after World War II examines the social and psychic upheaval of demobilisation. It maps the rapid transition from wartime regimentation to individual responsibility, from intense homosociality to heteronormative expectations, from normativity to disability and from uniformed masculinity to domestic citizenship. This book considers some of the many ways in which popular culture of the time sought to mediate these difficult transitions, exploring films, popular fiction, memoir and biography. In particular, the book explores how technology was imagined as a new space of masculine becoming and how disability was written, represented and assimilated. Through a focus on popular narrative, this book explores the modes of masculinity promoted as ideally suited to national reconstruction and tries to make sense of a culture of rehabilitation that could not name or know itself as such.

Book The Journey to a Little White House

Download or read book The Journey to a Little White House written by Lynda M. Buckman and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Permanent Married Quarters of a naval base to the little white house at the end of the road, Lynda M. Buckman and her family have lived a life of fun, adventure, and great love. Military service in their young adulthood and early marriage gave the author and her husband the tools they needed to facilitate strong communication throughout their now five-decades’ long partnership, including in their roles as parents, entrepreneurs, homesteaders, and hobby farmers. In four parts, each encompassing a different home, the author recounts her tales of lessons learned in short anecdotes that are at once comfortingly universal and delightfully original. Told with humour and a lot of heart, The Journey to a Little White House is the story of a wistful dream that became a beautiful reality.

Download or read book Qualitative Methods written by Dr. Salma Seth and published by Friends Publications (India). This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide researchers who are new (or relatively new) to qualitative research with the methodological tools and conceptual maps they need to navigate their way through the process. It describes the uncertainties surrounding qualitative research and the many dilemmas faced by researchers. It illustrates these by drawing on the experiences of researchers with varying degrees of expertise in qualitative research. It also provides readers with the necessary background knowledge and raises their awareness of the questions they will need to address to help them make informed decisions about how to deal with these uncertainties and dilemmas. The contents of the book are organized in a way that reflects the three main objectives that the authors had in mind. The first objective was to provide readers with the necessary background knowledge and an awareness of the questions they will need to address in order to make informed decisions about whether to conduct qualitative research and if they decide to follow a qualitative path, which particular qualitative approach(es) would be suited to their research goals. The second objective was to equip readers with the basic tools to carry out their analysis by providing detailed, contextualized coverage of the practicalities of the qualitative methods/approaches. In addition, the book includes accounts of an actual analysis of a specific data set in a step-by-step manner using the approaches. The third objective was to provide the reader with guidance as to how to write up qualitative research in general and the ethical considerations of qualitative inquiry in the concluding chapter.
